I often say the the .327 Federal Magnum is "better", or at least as good as 9mm because it's an efficient short barrel cartridge with a ton of power and hard barrier penetrating power to match the 9mm. Today I am testing Buffalo Bore ammunition! The 9mm is a 124 gr+P XTP rated at 1,225 FPS and the .327 Federal Magnum is a 100 gr XTP rated at 1,450 FPS. I am using the Taurus G2C 3.25" for the 9mm and the Ruger LCR 1.875" for the .327 Federal Magnum, and both guns have about the same amount of bullet travel in their respective guns. I am testing both of these cartridges in my standard chronograph/accuracy/Jug-or-Not test but am also doing a wood penetration and 50 yard "headshot" test. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

I did not expect either of those hollow points to penetrate as much as they did in that wood. I do not need another snub nose revolver, but if I did I'd make it a 327.

Thought I would mention this, as we always seem to have new subscribers that do not understand my style of humor. But basically, when I say "beats", "better" and so on, i'm doing so in a joking way that is not meant to put down a decent cartridge, which the 9mm certainly is. (Would I own three 9mm pistols just to make fun of the 9mm?!) Rather, I use the 9mm as the standard by which all others are judged as it's not a bad cartridge and right in the middle for being a perfect cartridge, so any other cartridge compared to it NEEDS to be talked up in order to show that there are other cartridges that are JUST as good as the 9mm. So, i'm not trying to upset 9mm fanboys, not trying to upset Glock 9mm fanboys and CERTAINLY not tryng to upset Glock 19 9mm fanboys!

I have gotten several comments that .327 Federal Magnum is not available. It is available on Buffalo Bore's website right now. Pretty much all calibers are available on Buffalo Bore's website. Some might say it's too expensive, but you get a good quality product from them with better quality control than anyone else, you get very close rated velocities, tight velocity spreads and all of that. If your life isn't worth $1.50 a round to you, and a good quality round at that, well, I guess I just don't understand that logic.

Hey Sam you were talking about your sense of humour above. Was "This is my daily carry and any day I get to shoot my daily carry gun is a good day" said in jest? Because I'm sure I'm not the only viewer who could see a possibility that was just the opposite. Then again that is my twisted mind. Great film as always.

Impressive 2x4 penetration by both rounds, but was surprised by the 327! Thanks for pointing out the efficiency of the 327 cartridge in a short barrel. Most reviewers focus on the extra round a 327 snub will give you, and the flexibility it offers because it can also shoot 32 H&R and 32 S&W long. Those are key features, but knowing it was designed for short barrel revolvers (SP101 3” I think?) sets it apart from 38 special and 357 mag. Not bashing the older cartridges...they have their own advantages and I own guns for both.
@mdubb4855
@mdubb4855 Год назад
38 can be made to hit hard out of a short barrel. It’s a question of tuning bullet weight and powder load and powder burn rate; this is the rage with Federal Punch in other calibers. However 327 excels in only fitting revolvers designed to accept 40,000 psi of pressure - no risk of blowing up the barrel in and old 32 colt. Plus the 327 will chamber and fire predecessor 32 revolver rounds according to another vlogger. If the barrel can handle 40000 psi in 327 federal spec revolvers that’s another parameter to play with. And yes one more round helps.
@mdubb4855
@mdubb4855 Год назад
What would you recommend for a recoil sensitive shooter, in a short barrel revolver, specifically a Ruger LCR or LCRX? 38 in target load wad cutters, 9mm with target load semi wad cutters, or 327 Federal Magnum but shoot non magnum 32? Do you recommend the shorter LCR or the longer X for better ballistics?
@edj6369
@edj6369 Год назад
Agree. Underwood and Buffalo Bore make some hot 38 spl ammo; nice option for me in a heavier steel revolver like the SP101 and Taurus Executive. For reloaders, there are many more options.
@edj6369
@edj6369 Год назад
Let’s see if GunSamRevolver weighs in, as I am no ballistics expert. I own and have carried 2” and 3” revolvers chambered in 38 spl (SW 642 2”), 357 (SP101 3”), 32H&R (Charter Arms Pro 3”) and 327 (LCRx 2”). For recoil SENSITIVE I recommend: 1. 642: 38 spl wadcutters. If Underwood is too hot, get Winchester, Federal, etc (see Lucky Gunner test data). 2. SP101: 38 +P Gold Dot, Win Ranger, Fed Punch, etc. 3. ÇA Pro; Hornady Critical Defense 80 gr 32 HR (maybe Doubletap 60gr?). 4. LCRx: Federal Hydrashok 327

@ronparks7516

@@GunSam That's "almost" what I do. I use 327 brass, 85 gr XTP, and the maximum load for a 32 H&R is 3.8 grains at 1003 FPS. Since I'm using a 327 case, I up that to 4.0 grains. Makes for a perfect target load whether you shoot factory 32 H&R or 327 Federal.

For winter carry, you don't worry about heavy clothing plugging the hollow point and stopping expansion? How about testing with an old parka and a long john top over your usual baloney pack setup? Hydra-Shok .327 85 grain, American Eagle .327 85 grain Jacketed Soft Point and Buffalo Bore .32 H&R +P 130 grain Hard Cast Keith are all about the same energy on paper. I'd like to see those three head to head vs a winterized setup... I wobble between the Buffalo Bore and the AE in the wintertime. Whichever I have in stock or as the mood strikes me. Definitely hollow points for warmer weather/less heavily clothed bandito season. Thanks, as always, for your excellent comparison work and for promoting the excellent .327 Federal cartridge.
@GunSam

I have done a couple of tests like that, and I didn't see a huge difference in certain calibers. If I remember right the .38 Special got clogged and changed expansion a little, but 9mm did not. I’ve been wanting a lcrx in 327 fed. I think it’s a sweet cartridge. You can also get an extra round in the cylinder when compared to 38/357. You can get 6 in the lcrx in 327 instead of 5rd of 38/357. Not a bad option for a carry piece, but for a plinker, which it’s not anyway, it may be hard to find ammo, or easy depending on the socioeconomic state of affairs. Higher pressure also is louder than a 9 as well. Hickock did a great vid specifically on the 327 fed for the lcr, or lcrx don’t remember which one. Great vid. Love both the G2c and lcr.

I see good hard barrier penetration as an advantage in military applications, but much less so in civilian self-defense. Proving once again, a better gun is one you will carry daily... many don't understand how light a 327 Fed mag round is... those 6 rounds in the Ruger LCR are easy shooting and accurate. Is fire power needed by an average citizen? Those 15 rounds of 9mm in a mag add weight to your daily carry. Then if you never practice and change out those 15 rounds, lint, pocket fuzz, or corrosion, make a semi auto less reliable then a revolver. Just a note... to anyone.... some snubbies are really hard to be accurate with... at least in my experience. The LCR has a really smooth trigger cam that keeps the gun pointed where you aim. The rubber hogue grip tames the recoil.... Many experts will tell you, a LCR in 327 is perhaps the best every day carry gun... because one can shoot the 327 fed mag, or the HR 32 Mag, or the SW 32 long, and still find ammo that can be used in SD. The SW long shoots as soft as a .22LR., yet is much more powerful and center fire primed vs rim fire . One accurate shot with good placement, trumps any round you can't keep on target. Yes... the zombie shots were amazingly fun to watch....
@GunSam

I agree with all you said. I have long ago seen how high capacity in a gun requires a holstered gun, but a pocket gun up to 6 or 7 rounds carries fine. In that category all you have basically is .380 ACP, Diamondback 9mm's and J-frame sized snubs. Comparing all of those with the 9mm going to jam every 2nd shot, the .380 underpowered and jamming, and the .327 with near as much power as a short barrel .357 Magnum load, 6 for sure....it makes sense why the .327 wins.

I have looked at the .327 mag. before and found it is almost identical to an old caliber the 32-20. My grandfather used to carry a 32-20 when he was a justice of the peace in a coal camp. The two have almost identical ballistics. In comparing for penetration in the wood the same weight of bullet should have been used. It is a simple matter that an equal weight bullet at higher velocity will have more energy to penetrate. When it matters downrange and results are necessary send mass.

The recoil is a lot less than typical .357 Magnum loads in a comparable snub. It's about like a .38+P in an ultralight 14 oz J-frame, out of the 17 oz LCR .327.
@Predalien195
@Predalien195 3 года назад
I'd say .327 Federal has about 20% less felt recoil over a .357 when comparing factory ammunition to each other. So a 115gr or 100gr .327 from Speer would have less than a 125gr .357 would. Hotter than a .38 +P but not quite as harsh as factory .357, so it has some serious ups especially in short barrels.

The problem with shooting water jugs is that water does not compress and thus transfers the energy of the bullet plus the weight of the water. This is not a accurate simulation of flesh because flesh has elasticity. I believe water will stop the forward travel of the bullet faster because of this. A wound channel in gel would simulate that elasticity.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 года назад
Well we can agree to disagree. Because shooting gel is like a human thoracic cavity? By being jelly, with no hardness at all? LOL. Denim, meat and hard fiberboard I have full confidence in 1,000 times more than unrealistic jelly. I have to use water jugs to stop a bullet.

I'm curious about the noise level of the 327mag. In my experience the smaller the caliber the more "ear splitting" the high frequency report. Do you find the 327mag something you could fire without ear plugs and not have permanent hearing damage?
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 года назад
I have never fired a .327 Mag without ear plugs, but I would imagine the sound might be somewhere between .38+P and .357 Mag. To me, the whole permanent hearing damage is not a concern as what is more important is the ability to stop a threat. Like, sure I could carry a .380 ACP or whatever, shoot an attacker, no effect, then I die and that saved my hearing, VS stopping the threat and being alive with some hearing damage. I mean, to me I just don't spend much tome thinking about it, if it happens it happens. But as far as saving your life goes, audio exclusion will kick in anyways, so sound won't change your performance in the moment. If you have damage later, so be it.

Well, with this ammo it was the same cost. In normal ammo times for practice ammo, the .327 is about twice the price of 9mm. With defensive ammo, again the cost is the same per box. The biggest issue right now is that because there is so much 9mm variety, that there is always 9mm somewhere being produced. .327 is not that short and not that high-pressure, and it does benefit from longer barrels compared to LCR quite a bit. See ballistics bytheinch.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 года назад
Ballistics by the inch has good info, but it's not the tell all as they use barrels that are test barrels for most of their .327 Mag testing. The rifle, that is the rifle when it comes to .327 Federal Magnum is the Henry Big Boy rifle. That has a 20" barrel. So, I found someone who chronographed a round of ammo I chronographed in this 1.875" snub, and that is the 130 gr Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman ammo. In my snub I averaged 1,217 FPS. In that 20" Henry rifle, same ammo, they got 1,607 FPS. So yes, that rifle did gain 390 FPS and 318 ft lbs, but it's not quite the jump as one might get in .357 Magnum. If you take a comparable cartridge, the Buffalo Bore 180 gr Outdoorsman, they show in an 18" barrel Marlin 1894 getting 1,851 FPS/1,369 ft lbs. The closest they got to a snub is 3" S&W J-frame is showing 1,302 FPS/677 ft lbs. So, to run down, the .327 Federal separated by 18" of barrel gained 318 ft lbs energy. The .357 Mag separated by only 15" of barrel gained 692 ft lbs energy. So, I still stand by my claim that you really don't gain from a longer barrel, I mean you technically do, but it's more in line with what you might gain with any other ordinary pistol cartridge, not what you gain with a true magnum like .357 or .44 Magnum.

@@nickfoster8007 I just bought mine on Buffalo Bore's website. One might say well "practice ammo", but honestly if someone really really wanted to go the LCR route and had the time and money, they could get LCR's in both .327 and .357 Mag, and practice with the .357 Mag with appropriate ammo to match the felt recoil of the .327 Mag, which would essentially be a warm .38+P in the .357 revolver.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 года назад
Well, yes and no. One might say you need to reload a lot to practice a lot....but two things; one, the LCR and the .327 are both really accurate and low recoil, so "practice" honestly is not quite as imperative as either a semi auto where you might need to clear jams, or a .357 Mag revolver where you really need to train for recoil control. And two, you don't need to test revolver rounds for reliability per say. I mean, yes you need to know you can handle them and they will extract fine, but honestly you can buy one box of Buffalo Bore ammo and test a few rounds and carry the rest. With a semi auto you legitimately need to get at least a 50 round box of that ammo, some say 200 rounds....I say 50 is fine, and run a couple mags to make sure it functions.

A round that has a small hole in the meat, yet starts to expand later may be more lethal as the petals expand further into the body cavity, hitting a heart or lungs..Modern ammo design has made the 9mm a lethal round compared to the old ball 9mm used by armies... Buffalo Bore typically shows multiple real world guns, and specific velocity "rating" on those guns. So when I can, I mention a rated velocity as stated for a certain gun.
