This in-depth, two-part how-to series takes you through the installation process of a flashing tail lamp and pickup circuitry, step-by-step.
Part A looked at designing and building a small rectifier and stay-alive/keep-alive circuit, from component selection to soldering. You can watch it here: • #32 Part A: Installing...
In this part, Part B, we look at adding a switch, installing the red tail lamp itself and, because the flasher unit used requires a specific voltage, the design and build of a small rectifier circuit.
The circuitry used in this video series is just as applicable for coach lighting circuits or most other situations where you need to get power from the tracks into a coach or wagon to power a light.
You can download the schematic for the circuitry here: tinyurl.com/coach-lighting-st...

Hadn't heard of those wheel pickups - great idea - very simple. Great demo as usual.

Many thanks, John. Yes, these pick up are great. I use them quite a lot now and particularly where the wheels are double insulated so make it harder to use the spring pickups (you have to bridge the insulation on one side - fiddly!).

Most interesting video, particularly liked your Solder stand, I've got a heavy cast iron base which will make a fine stand for me

Many thanks, Glenn. It was actually my granddad's soldering pad. I used to watch him solder and mend things using it when I was wee, and it's what he taught me to solder on, so it's been around the block and then some!

I fixed a few of my Mk1 Brake coaches with flashing tail lights as per your method, but I have a set of new LNER Teaks and was wondering what type of light would come out of the old oil laps ie. Flicker for flashing or a fixed red light??? Very clear instructions in your presentation, Cheers mate, Michael.

Hi Michael. They were likely oil lamps and fixed red. The flashing only came in with battery technology...and even in the 80s as a wee boy, I remember seeing oil lamps on mk2 formations in Scotland. So the oil lamps did hang on for quite a few years after the battery lamps came in.

Why do you need the switch ? When you turn off track power lights go out?

Very impressive skills David, and attention to detail. The link to your schematics does not find the relevant file...Simon

Link fixed. Turns out RU-vid didn't like the direct download link and it didn't work properly. It should now take you to my blog post which has a page download half way down the page.

Simon -Liverton Central Should work now. Turns out it wasn't RU-vid, rather then download plugin was out of date. Should be OK now. Fingers crossed!

you probably know this but single tail lamps are always placed on the left, as you look at the rear, of the rear vehicle.

Hi. Many thanks for the comment. That may be the written rule, but you'll find scores of prototypical examples where the lamp is on the right. I'm watching a video of loco-hauled trains in the early 1990s in Scotland as I type and over 50% of them have the lamp on the right. Even Bachmann's new Mk2 coaches with working tail lamps have the lamps on the right...so there's definitely a clear precedent for it, even if the rule book says otherwise. 🙂

@@StrathpefferJunction thanks, as an ex driver they were or should, on modern trains be on the left www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fimage.shutterstock.com%2Fimage-photo%2Fturves-cambridgeshire-uk-august-11-260nw-1064886794.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.shutterstock.com%2Fsearch%2Fgb%2Brail%2Bfreight&docid=cVufJQXnrs5EVM&tbnid=cWWy9wbv5sAivM%3A&vet=12ahUKEwi2p7X3rNjlAhVJfMAKHW5cBcE4ZBAzKDkwOXoECAEQRg..i&w=390&h=280&client=firefox-b-d&bih=984&biw=1920&q=rear%20of%20freightliner%20train%20photo&ved=2ahUKEwi2p7X3rNjlAhVJfMAKHW5cBcE4ZBAzKDkwOXoECAEQRg&iact=mrc&uact=8 there is a simple reason for this, that they will be in front of the driver of a following train. But it's your layout 8). For instance the marker lights on shunters (08s) have white and red on the buffer beams, the red being on the left hand side for the same reason.
