Testing the Liberty Civil Defense ammunition in .357 Magnum and .45 ACP fired through full size handguns. The .357 Magnum is a 50 gr fragmenting hollow point rated at 2,100 FPS and the .45 ACP is a 78 gr fragmenting hollow point rated at 1,900 FPS. Always appreciative of any channel help :)

Impressive 45 acp load. But in 357 magnum, I would choose the old 125 Sjhp remington/federal load any day. That load made by Liberty lacks of penetration. Thanks.

No doubt. I was thinking these liberty loads might be good for home defense, for summer use, if you didn't have another gun for that purpose. Eliminate the overpenetration issue. Other than that, there are so many good .357 loads out there that I can't justify buying any of the fancy stuff , unless it's for hunting bear.

Excellent test. RE: defensive rounds, I like 3" barrels which are obviously limiting. I just bought some 50 grin Liberty ammo and some Fort Scott Munitions 357 MAGNUM 125 Grain for a Colt King Cobra which I got because I like its feel and balance and trigger and compactness. But I went into the store to get a 3" S&W 44 magnum and after watching this I'm sorry I didn't. G2 R.I.P. ammo looks interesting and I can't find Glazer anywhere. I like 357 magnum, and these days I target shoot more with revolvers when for decades it was always semis. Usually, with 357 magnum, I like 125 grain SJHP and even more so the 158 grain SJHP. Those are surely powerful but also overpenetrating for "safe" defensive shooting. There is such a big product choice thee days, combined with huge production shortages, so you get the added pleasure of combining confusion with frustration. Too, all these rounds make astounding promises. It looks like the Liberty 45 does just what it's supposed to do, and so it looks like I'll just buy another 44 magnum. I find it hard to be brief, but I'd like to ask, with 357 magnum with a 3" barrel, what ammo would you favor for defense, in the event you win the "bad lottery", which happily has never occurred to me.

Yes it's interesting. I thin the Inceptor ARX would be a better choice. It penetrated to the normal "15 inch" range but it would also break up against enough hard barriers. The ARX is not technically fragmenting as when it breaks the fragments are larger than 15% of the total bullet weight, but it still would do alright.

A few years ago when my daughter was in college, I took her to a very nice outdoor range in Huntsville, Tx. It had overhead tin cover. 5 lanes down from us was a kid shooting a .50 cal Desert Eagle. I always wear double hearing protection. I have bad tinnitus from sirens and poor hearing protection while shooting for many years. My ears rang horribly for weeks after that guy shot the Desert Eagle. It actually hurt when he fired. A lone intruder in my house might get an arrow instead of a bullet.

@@locomike102 exactly. there are many rounds/calibers that deliver as much or more energy and wounding capability. the purpose of the 357 is not to be 2nd 3rd or 4th place behind the 45 (no knock on the 45). its job is to make sure you put holes through in things, not be a louder and more expensive 38 special. over penetration is a huge strawman. if you use a sub par round to prevent it then you are obviously not too concerned about the actual target

I think the energy that this ammo bring to the table in semi auto calibers is great. However something isn't right when the 45 acp and 9mm beat a 357 magnum with the same ammo and barrel length. While the energy in semi autos is impressive though, my issue is the apparent lack of penetration. Maybe they could use a harder copper alloy to delay the fragmentation just enough to gain few extra inches of penetration. If that's at all possible, I don't know. I don't build bullets, I just shoot them. However on a side note. My uncle carries this ammo in his glock 19. Not because of the energy, but because they make the gun noticeably lighter with a fully loaded magazine.

I just bought some of the 45 ACP, and intend to use it in my FNX-45 (5.3" barrel), and plan on having one round chambered, and one at the top of its 15 round mag, followed by deeper penetrating (but a lot slower @ 1080FPS and with only a slightly lower 518 FPE) Speer Gold Dots +P 200 Grain JHP. That way, the first 2 shots will have caught the intruder's attention, and the Gold Dots will make sure he's taught a lesson to stay out of my home until he's invited. And recoil with both rounds should be quite manageable, which is always a concern.

The 45acp would probably be great for home defense but is it a lot louder than a normal 230 grain cartridge?
@GunSam
@GunSam 4 года назад
It's hard to know how loud it is compared to a regular old .45 ACP round as I wear the big ear muffs, but i'd say it would have to be louder theoretically simply for being a +P and there would have to be more powder as the bullet isn't seated deep, so add those facts together and i'd say it would have to be really loud.
@Predalien195
@Predalien195 4 года назад
Some would say that this is super shallow penetration... I'm more of the opinion that if this was say a shot to the gut, or lungs... You'd be in serious trouble. One main benefit not often talked about is the light felt recoil, keeps muzzle rise down for rapid follow up shots. I've got some of this stuff in .45 Colt, in a 6 inch barrel it's similar to that .45 ACP load. In an 18 inch barrel, it picks up some on the core's penetration and over velocity which makes that initial wound much larger.
@michaellynch4210
@michaellynch4210 4 года назад
Nice tests, as always. Seems like one of the selling points for copper bullets is the "barrier blindness" aspect. My concern is that a typical barrier would suck up the energy from these rounds upon initial impact; since they are so light. In other words, you'd destroy the windshield and then not have any energy left to stop the person; or you'd throw a big hole in the outer steel of a car door and then skin somebody's knee with what's left of the bullet, if the bullet were to even go that far. When it comes to 45 ACP, I usually carry about 152 grains heavier and call it a day. Federal Law Enforcement ammo (tactical bonded 230 grain in +p) is a great expander. When it comes to lighter copper projectiles, I really like the solid copper Lehigh Defense rounds in the x-treme series (defender and penetrator). While the results look impressive in a simulated environment, I would not be convinced to change to Liberty's Civil Defense based on those tests. For 357, I'd just hand-load some Rim Rock 158 grain, gas checked, SWC-JHPs with a BHN hardness of 5 and let them expand into massive mushroom caps. Sometimes, you just can't beat sticking with old school (I load those same Rim Rock rounds in 38 special with a .5cc scoop of Power Pistol equaling about 5.5 grains.....and I'm getting about 840 FPS out of my j frame model 638 that is always in my front pocket).
@GunSam
@GunSam 4 года назад
Yeah a lot of people focus on "hard barrier penetration" as a singular thing, and the ammo companies play on this. Sure it might whizz through a 3A plate, but I doubt it would go through two 2x4"s. So really it's not too great.

I had to follow up on my own comment to add that people should really put less emphasis on velocity when choosing a defensive round. Velocity gives you a flat trajectory for long-range shooting and helps keep the energy up at those long ranges. And yes, if two bullets weigh the same the faster one will be more powerful. But when you cut the weight to get more velocity you don't gain anything overall. Think of it like this, photons move at the speed of light. They are the fastest thing in the universe. But they have no mass. So even though you are bombarded by inconceivable numbers of them every second of the day you don't feel a thing. The .45acp round in this video was traveling over 2,000 fps, which is stupid fast for a .45acp. But it was so light it did less damage than standard ammo I've seen tested. Not saying I'd want to be shot with it. But I challenge anybody to compare that cartridge to a 1oz (437 grain) 12ga slug traveling at just 1,200 fps and tell me they still think velocity trumps mass.

Just curious if that kind of velocity would be damaging in the long-term to handgun (45 ACP, for example) which is normally lucky to reach 1000fps. How did the recoil of 78gr 45ACP compare to standard ammo?
@GunSam
@GunSam 4 года назад
less recoil than average. Long term it probably wouldn't to anything to the semi auto. Depending on some factors it would be more likely to damage the revolver as the bullet is so super short it clears the forcing cone and allows a ton of hot gas to erode and cut the forcing cone and top strap. This .357 ammo isn't super hot so maybe not, but it's still not good to clear the chamber so quickly. A 158 gr bullet is better to expend most of it's pressure while the bullet is sealing the cylinder gap.
@javamanV3
@javamanV3 4 года назад
I am really confused and obviously missing something. you shoot a round with 1/3 the standard bullet weight. In the 45 it did what was expected. Make for a faster round. the 357 on the other hand we off by a couple hundred feet per second vs a standard weight round (157 grn) which means, of course, that the bullet energy is lower. Why would you ever load a 50 grn bullet into a 357 if it is going to produce less velocity? Why are these so loud when they seem to be using a lighter charge? Why is everyone so high on this round? Please educate me.
@GunSam
@GunSam 4 года назад
They listed 2,100 FPS or 490 ft lbs, which still wouldn't be that great even if it did get rated velocity. There really isn't anything good about this ammo in .357 Mag and their website doesn't really do a whole lot for proof other than show stills of expanded ballistics gel looking like a grenade went off inside it. Looks cool, looks impressive but it's really not practical for self defense. I'm sure if the right shot was made it would be devastating, however I could guarantee it would not enter the thoracic cavity if a side shot was made on an arm. So, it's 50/50 ammo. If a front shot is made it's probably going to be a 1 shot stop, but a side shot will be very low "stopping power". I would rather have an 80% stop odds from all angles than have a round like this.

Wow. For busting water jugs, that stuff is clearly a winner. I wouldn't use it for self defense myself. They could get more penetration by redesigning the hollow points to have slightly thicker walls and increased bullet mass. They could always score the walls if they are afraid they won't get any expansion. Not to the extent of the R.I.P. round though. That thing is also kinda useless, IMO.

It's interesting stuff. People claim that it will penetrate 3A armor, so I did find MAC's videos of him doing just that, but at the same time I have doubts it would go through a single 2x4.

I think Liberty CD is awesome in traditionally lower velocities( .38spl, 45acp, 380acp,ect.) In magnum loads though, performance is marginal simply because the magnum is already pushing a traditional weight bullet at high velocity. The trick with this ammo is immediate energy dump. I would imagine it would look like a bomb went off inside the thoracic cavity of the unfortunate recipient. Check out Paul Harrell shooting the meat target with 9mm.
@GunSam
@GunSam 4 года назад
I think I saw that video. Personally I see this ammo as a niche market, but it might be cool to see something like this in a .380 Ruger LCP just to see how light the gun is when loaded and how much potential damage it will still cause.

Well, but that's saying do something that I don't want to do as I think gel is gel, there's no representation in my opinion of anything realistic, that's why I don't do it. Plus, no one is going to give me all the money to do all of this. From what I understand, it takes like 8 hours to remelt even clear ballistics and you don't want to do in in your house oven. So while your comment sounds legit, if I did as you say I would go from 5 videos a month to one video every two months, all while doing the same thing everyone else does, again, and again...sounds like a lose lose situation for me.

This ammunition was improperly named and marketed. It should be called "Varmint Grenade - Pest control". I think for personal defense, it would turn the first 3-4" of flesh into splatter and leave the rib cage exposed with fully functional organs beneath. hahaha

I don't think I would use either. Not enough penetration....9", and that's gel not human. Most people think 9" of penetration in gel is the same as 9" in a human, it's not. Those light weight bullet high velocity rounds never seem to penetrate enough. Great presentation by you though.

Anyone having problems manually cycling the .45 ACP version of this ammo through their .45's? It does nothing but jam in both my FNX-45 and Colt 1911. They aren't being fully extracted, and it would appear that possibly the fact that each case's bottom is 0.1mm narrower in diameter than my Federal or Gold Dot ammo (which cycles just fine) might be screwing up the ejection.
@jasonsliger5430
@jasonsliger5430 4 года назад
It's a interesting load, I don't think a human would advance any further or be getting up after being hit with it. Over penetration most likely wouldn't be a issue. Most bodies are not much thicker than a foot. Thanks

Penetration is good but 6 to 10 inches of penetration is destroying any human being. You don't need 16 inches to pierce a lung or heart. The way these rounds dump all of the energy into the target would be catastrophic. The only time these might not get the job done is if someone was behind sufficient cover. Apparently all of the civil defense ammo defeats soft 3a armor.

Played around with some reloads today and found a really accurate load with hornady 125xtp with 7.6gr Unique in 357mag cases that would be better than what you just used. The lyman 47th book shows these loads to produce 1072fps with 24000cup out of a 4in barrel. They have very little recoil and sounds are that of a 38spl.

Considering I have fired 125 gr bullets out of this same revolver at over 1,600 FPS, this 50 gr should have had the ability to match that other round's energy. So in my mind this round should have reached 2,500 FPS but was far below that.
