I enjoy seeing follow up videos when upgrades are made, great job. I put a spartan in my 99 4Runner years ago. I run 4.88 and 35’s. I like it a lot, it’s only noticeable in a turn when both tires have something to bite on.

I've got lunch box lockers front and rear. Have been using them for decades. People that say you shouldn't have on up front, have never learned how to use one. One the street it is invisible up front because I have real hubs. Offroad all you gotta do is blip the throttle to give the locker up front a chance to unlock as and relieve stress and understeer you get, typically climbing a hill and turning at the same time. As for wear; the cross pins wear flats on them. Eventually, after 30,000 miles or so, I just replace the locker because cross pin wear gets severe. Only had 1 lunch box locker fail and it still got me home. What happens when the cross pin wears flats; the dog teeth don't engage as tight allowing slippage and ratcheting even going straight down the road. Took 30,000 miles for that to happen and only to the rear locker.

Chevy K5 Blazer, 12 bolt rear Yukon Shafts, Dana 44 front stock shafts, 6.2 diesel. Powertrax No Slip rear, Spartan Locker Front. Another Chevy K5 Blazer 12 bolt rear 10 bolt front, 350 gas, EZ lockers front rear. (This is the truck I wore the crosspin out at 30,000 miles.) Yet another K5 Blazer, 12 bolt rear Dana 44 front, Small block 400 cu in, Power Trax No Slip rear, EZ Locker front. All trucks on 33's and 3.73 gears

@@Iceaxehikesand that’s 30k of using them right? Like if they’re in the rear. In the front with manual locking hubs that don’t get engaged more than a few times a year would last a while right?
@Iceaxehikes
@Iceaxehikes 8 месяцев назад
@@WalterMelons I finally replaced the rear 12 bolt lunch box locker with a Full Case Detroit. The carrier bearing on the drivers side was worn out. So I went ahead and did a full rebuild. That 12 bolt rearend had over 300 k miles on it, though only the last 50k with the Powertrax no slip lunch box. When I rebuilt the axle and pulled the open carrier; that Powertrax No Slip looks just fine. The carrier bearing was shedding material but none of it seemed to affect the no-slip. The Detroit is fine so far. The noise and handling issues are vastly exaggerated in my opinion. Now this is a K5 Blazer(M1009), so your experience may be different in another vehicle or style of driving. I guess I have been driving locked rigs for decades at this point so maybe I just know what the do on ice or slick sidehills and I just don't think about it anymore. Yes, the front Spartan is still in that axle and only gets used when 4wd and hubs are locked. There is one odd thing a front lunch box locker will do in 2WD WITH the hubs locked; is click and rumble when making sharp turns but no handling issues since no torque is there. Just the wheels driving the locker with the power disconnected at the T-case there is some noise. The only reason I do that is on snowy days I have the hubs locked ready for 4wd but leaving it in 2WD until it's neccesary, such as going from plowed town roads back out into the hills, it's nice to have the hubs locked so I can just shift on the fly into 4WD.

I used and still use a lunchbox locker (Lockright) in the front of my TJ running an XJ front D30R since 2006. I did have an issue after 7 yrs of running it on 35s. Shaft yokes and ujoints broke (I'd say 5 times) so replacement shafts were tossed in. Never checked over the locker or the carrier case. I finally broke the carrier case at the center shaft and that broke the locker inner cups. Shafts were still good. Got another carrier, new gears, and then RCVs. Drove like that for another year, then broke an RCV at the internal splines. Driving some 100yrds to get trailer access, the carrier case's bearing ear got damaged from the broken shaft pieces. Upgraded to a full locker, RCV warrantied their shaft, they also rebuilt the cvs (both sides) at the same time. That was back in '13. Still wheeling and driving on the street. Have an 8.8 with Lockright in the rear. Stock everything no issue to this date. TJ is an auto 2.5l big block 4cyl with stock tcase. My recommendation would be to recheck the locker clearance and the center shaft of the carrier case.

I've run an Aussie in the front of my JK (D30) for a few years now, no issues whatsoever!! I do hear it, clicking and popping on tight turns, but it isn't that big of a deal to me. That's what they are supposed to do! I ran a similar "Lunchbox" locker in the back of a mud truck years ago, and had similar success with that as well. Great little inexpensive lockers, money well spent!!

Great video. Your XJ is awesome I also have an auto locker in my Dana 30. My Jeep is a TJ and it’s a spartan Locker. I’ve been using it as a daily driver for years and I haven’t had any problems with it on the road. A rash did a little bit around turns for the first several months but now it’s quiet. It does pop every once in a while but only at low speeds. I haven’t had any difficulty turning, but I do notice it being stiff on the gravel when I take it out of four-wheel-drive and the wheels are looking for some slippage. I have 31 inch tires and my axle has been performing fine, and I am upgrading to 33 inch tires with very little concern about the strength of the axle and the locker. I live in Hawaii, so the kind of wheeling we do here is not likely to break the 30 or the locker

it is fine. you just cant do anything dumb and get away with it. When you take your foot off the throttle it differentiates. so it isnt bad. My rear limited slip is actually worst as it is totally unpredictable. And it kicks the tail sometimes. Feather the throttle and youll be fine. Which is how you should drive on snowy roads anyway. I'd say front locker is safer in the snow because you know it is there and keeps you from doing anything dumb. lol.

There were times off road it wanted to act more like a limited slip then a locker. I’ve run Aussie and spartan and will say their is a reason they run a little more then powertrax. Several years use and still work well.

Currie recommends a Detroit locker-type overrunning ratchet differential. It requires the faster spinning tire to ratchet much like a ratchet wrench. In 2WD it still has to ratchet since the wheels are locked together unless using manually locking hubs. However, manually locking hubs require at least a 5.5" bolt circle and are definitely not a Dana 30 thing. Teraflex does have a manually locking hub and axle kit for the Dana 44 though...somewhat expensive.

@@huntersmith4153 I've had an Aussie in the front now for almost 3 yrs. Just put one in my dana 35 in the spring of this year. And so far they are both holding up real well. The back you can hear ratcheting when going around a sharp turn but you get use to it. The front one you can't hear at all. The only advise i can give you is put the one in the front, first. You will be surprised of the capability over stock. Oh and get rid of the track bars front and rear. You'll see a big difference in the flex too

Have one in my daily driver Xj Dana 35 rear loc-right locker same as the Aussie or Spartan locker , 10k miles no problems , set up to specs perfectly . 7k was on 31" Patagonia Mt , last 3k are on 33" grabber X3 Mt , next is throwing one up front in the Dana 30 😂

Ive had a Gen-rite lock right in the back of my wife's tj for 9 years, i just pulled the cover to do a fluid change, and other than the standard wear of the dana 35 needing a rebuild, the locker on the other hand still looks brand new, infact when i rebuild the axle im putting the same exact locker back in it after i put it through an ultrasonic cleaner. The only wear in the axle is from the old gear set having 200,000 miles on it. The locker has 100,000 miles and still looks new no scuffs or any warn teeth edges in either the locker side or axle side of it. Of course its the one Made by Richmond. So its forged. And my wife only has 33 inch tires on it. And its my wife's daily driver. I dont know who Gen-rite uses today but 9 years ago Richmond usa made them for their company, today i think they are made over seas.

I ran an Aussie in my '89 XJ w/4.56s on 34x9.50 TSLs. Broke several stock shafts (usu a U-joint that also took out the ears) but no other problems til I ran my 38x12.50 "snow shoes" in the rocks-- cracked the carrier & chewed the pinion's nose a lil. Installed a Grizzly Locker from Yukon & passed on the Aussie to another Jeeper. Now it still lives (8yrs after purchase) in another rig. Flawless trail performance. On pavement it didn't like sharp "parking lot" type (sharp 90* or U turn) turns at anything over 3mph. It'd rattle and shudder. Never noticed it at speed on regular two lane or highway driving. In 4wd on a hard surface it'd sometimes pull to one side or the other until the torque split between the wheels evened out. This was normally a nothing, but driving home without a rear driveline (aka front wheel drive) was a nerve wracking experience-- It looked and felt like you were drunk as the jeep lurched left and right alternately under throttle and brake. I'd definitely recommend Aussie as a budget friendly upgrade, but carry an extra set of used front shafts (in their unit bearings) to change out the nearly inevitable event of a shaft or u-joint failure. Shafts in bearings only take about 20min to change out on the trail, yes I know! ;)

I ran Aussie lockers front and rear in a hp30 and 8.8 combo. I ended up blowing the front differential up when the hardened cross pin broke, which slid out and got caught between the ring and pinion, taking all the teeth off the pinion and a few teeth off if the ring gear. The carrier was also cracked in two different directions, originating from the cross pin hole. The locker strength is fine...it's the cross pin and especially the dana 30 carrier that will eventually fail.

Great info in your video. I have the same locker in my 30. Stock shafts on 33s, and no problems. Been to Moab on Poison Spider and did great. Cat on a rug traction. The reverse rotation design helps the ring and pinion last longer since they dont want to separate from each other. The stock shafts could be a weak link if you're heavy on the gas. I get alot of ratcheting around tight corners but everybody runs different clearances, to a certain degree. I also use the heavier weight oil to keep noise down. Going to put one in the rear axle.

Glad the Dana 30 is working for you. It's a good little axle. Just don't get overconfident. I had a friend on 36-13.50s and a non-trussed Dana 30. Had some shitty PowerTrax lunchbox locker in it. He did a lot of wheeling, and then, one day his pinion gear ran rough-shod over his carrier. Along with the carrier itself, at least one end of the cross-shaft had 1/8" deep gear tracks going across it, which tells you just about how out of alignment those gears were at that moment. Needless to say, that was the end of that Dana 30. Unlike the Lock-Rite, and later, the Aussie, PowerTrax had a reputation for breaking in Jeeps. Surprisingly, the PowerTrax locker survived with barely a mark on it. With the pinion running amok and all the chunks of gear and what-not mixing around in there, that was some luck. I sold it for him on eBay for a good price. As for the Aussie locker, I think they're tough as nails. People who try to denigrate them are generally ignorant douches just repeating what some other ignorant douche said. I run them front and rear in my Jeep. I'd guess they're probably the toughest things inside those axles.

Not everyone has lifted, big tire XJs. I'm not interested in rock crawling, and I drive on the street most of the time. I had a 2000 stock XJ with only 29 inch tires and Chrysler open diff in the back. I put in a rear lunchbox locker for our first Jeep Jamboree. It's highway manners to get there was normal, and it was amazing off road. I'm about to do the same for my recently acquired ZJ.

Hey man, have you done any sand/beach driving ? It's one concern I have about fitting one in the front of the liberty considering the speed's you can do driving on the beach in 4wd or maybe there is enough constant wheel slip that it's not so much of an issue. A rear one could be an option though. Cheers

Question! I have a '97 ram 2500 that I'm going to put a lunchbox locker in the front, but I'm worried about one side of the locker spinning constantly while 2 wheel drive, reason being is my truck does not have selectable locking hubs, so the axle shaft would turn constantly while driving down the road. (This truck does have a CAD / Center axle disconnect on the the passenger side, so while in 2x4 its actually only the driver side axle that turns constantly while driving. If anyone has any info on this it would he greatly appreciated, thanks.
