‘37 is on my bucket list. Excited to see this build.

Oh yes, it was on mine too and I looked for one for a few years before I came across this one. I would have taken anything from 35-37 since they all have the cab styling that makes these trucks look so good!

Thanks Philip. I’ve been super intrigued seeing this pickup hiding in the corner. I’m envious! Those prewar Ford frames are beautiful IMO. One thing I would urge you to mock up *soon*is the seat, pedals, wheel and legroom. It’s channeled so hard it might be a tight squeeze! It’s always hard to guess what a builder had in mind, but maybe the cowl steering was needed to make more room for engine, exhaust, etc. and maybe one reason for that big cutout in the cab back is they were planning to run the driveshaft right thru the cab, with a tunnel. Very cool truck. The builder had a good eye.

I agree with everything you said. But on the cowl steering, there’s often a lot of bump steer. That’s why I’m changing it. It does look good though, it’s just hard to get right unless you have a extremely stiff suspension with little movement. Thanks for checking it out!

That truck is a way better than it looks like. That body isnt bad at all. I think you are on the right track with the "new" powertrain, it sure makes life easier with this one. I think only thing that i dont personally like, is that suicide front end. It looks like a bit weird to my eyes.
@phillipshotrodgarage
@phillipshotrodgarage 7 месяцев назад
I have a good stock factory front crossmember that I could slide in there to move the suspension back to the stock location if I decide to. I think the engine needs to go in, then the bed needs to be fabricated, then take a look at that front end again. the photos I've seen of finished trucks done that way don't look too bad. This one looks a bit stretched out in it's current state, but I have options on that if it needs to be changed. we will see!
@1fknhpycmpr355
@1fknhpycmpr355 7 месяцев назад
@@phillipshotrodgarage I guess the suicide front is easy way to make some room and get the car/truck a really low, i guess they did it beacuse of that y-block. That stretch is the thing that pops in my eyes, otherwise its pretty sweet project.
@phillipshotrodgarage

I won’t know how good that front end is going to look until a bed goes on. That will give proportion

Hey Phillip, that’s going to be a cool build, love those old Ford pickups as much as I love Model A’s. I like the stance of it and curious what you are thinking for a box or flat deck for it? That Y block would certainly look cool in it but flat head would probably be a bit more roomy. Loved the video and always curious of your other projects you have stashed! Have a great week Phillip!

Thanks for checking it out! I’ll be using the 40 flathead I made a couple of videos on. I live the Y block, but I think I’ll find a digger t home for it. When you said box, I assume you were talking about the bed?
@raymondantonio4145
@raymondantonio4145 7 месяцев назад
Good morning Phillip Yes I was referring to the bed,with the back part of the frame being kicked up so high, how the back bed would look? A nice flat deck would look pretty cool too? Do you have an email address, I’ll send you a couple pictures of the 41 Ford pickup I’ve done up. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family Phillip.

Spindles were done backwards on purpose. I would agree with you though
@phillipshotrodgarage
@phillipshotrodgarage 7 месяцев назад
The spindles being backwards throws the Ackerman way off. I wish I had thought to mention that. Then on another note, having your tie rod out front isn’t the best idea either. Hit a animal or something and your wheels are instantly toed in.
@tradrodsandcustoms
@tradrodsandcustoms 7 месяцев назад
@@phillipshotrodgarage yeah its never been the smartest choice, suicide front ends have their name for a reason! To donit correctly the spindles need heated and bent to restore the ackerman angle
@phillipshotrodgarage
@phillipshotrodgarage 7 месяцев назад
I think if you bent the arms all the way out till they were right at the tire, the Ackerman would still be off.
@tradrodsandcustoms
@tradrodsandcustoms 7 месяцев назад
@@phillipshotrodgarage idk, maybe guys ran em with the ackerman off, i know they ran em like that though. Usually the lazy answer to not enough room under engine for tie rod
@phillipshotrodgarage
@phillipshotrodgarage 7 месяцев назад
Rat Rod Bob had a video about it when he built his last rat rod truck. He talked about the Ackerman and how far it was off running the spindles backwards. He bent the arms all the way out till almost touching the tires, and it was still pretty far off. Of course his answer to that is, "it's a rat rod, who cares"...

Isn’t the steering box post 41? Looked like a F100 box to me.

@phillipshotrodgarage 7 месяцев назад
It’s late 50’s but I won’t be using it. That was the one they were using for the cowl steering setup.

My 2 cents, dont take that gorgeous y block out and stick a t5 in it, if youre going traditional source a big buick, big packard, lasalle or a ford 3 speed. If youre keepin the t5 then keep the y block
@phillipshotrodgarage
@phillipshotrodgarage 7 месяцев назад
As I said, they flathead will be less work. I’ll find something else for the y-block to go in. It’s a keeper for sure. I have to hunt a ford 3 speed. It will make it a bolt in deal and get me going pretty quick. But then again I have the 3.78 gears to deal with. If I’m going to drive this thing much, I really need a overdrive. I might end up disguising that t5 so nobody sees it under there. Sure would be better to drive.
@tradrodsandcustoms
@tradrodsandcustoms 7 месяцев назад
@@phillipshotrodgarage i hear ya. Lots of fellas on the hamb would agree with you as well. In my opinion driving nicer isnt the point of a traditional period hot rod which is a big part of why you are going to the flatty, lasalles, packards and buicks all have better gearing. You can also take a ford 3 speed and swap in later guts. You can ALSO swap rear gears to make it more highway friendly. Lots of options, just throwin em out there. Its your rig buddy, build it to achieve your dream!
@tradrodsandcustoms
@tradrodsandcustoms 7 месяцев назад
@@phillipshotrodgarage you could ALSO keep the y block and swap that rear end, stick a 50s rear in it with the 35/6 bones under it so you dont have to change spring pack or crossmember...decisions decisions
@phillipshotrodgarage
@phillipshotrodgarage 7 месяцев назад
Yes sir, all great ideas. I’ll be keeping the y-block for sure, and I know where a 58 9” rear is I’m getting. I’m on the hunt for another cheap set of rear radius rods. I have another model a coupe, so that will give me all I need for another build.

As Brian said, I’m going for a earlier build on this truck. The Y-Block is a cool engine, and I really like them a lot. I’ll be using that engine in another project. I have another model A coupe it will likely go in at some point. That engine is a keeper for me for sure!
