Now that we are in 2020, both 3lcd and dlp projectors improved significantly in contrast and brightness and also available in 1080p and 4k. But rainbow effect still and will exists for dlp for some users. 3 chip Dlp still too expensive for home and available only for commercially use. But there is one affordable option, LCOS or Sony famous brand SXRD projectors that produce superior quality images better than both of 3lcd and dlp.

At least I can comprehend how DLP works. I still have a lot of trouble comprehending how 3LCD works. You divide the light into 3 colours, then recombine then? What? Does it work like the LCD monitor then, with tilting the different colour components, or what? Are they displayed pixel by pixel, or what? I don't get it.
@zark212
@zark212 8 лет назад
+Stephanus Tavilrond (Irrational Yuriphobe) The video did not illustrate the prism used in 3 LCD.The Monitor works in a different configuration and is not "Front projected". The rear of the panels monitor is used as Black.
@jasonsong86
@jasonsong86 8 лет назад
Monitors have three different color in one pixel which is easier to achieve with much lower pixel density. Considering your smart phone with 4 inch screen that has 1080p where a 3lcd projector only has about 1 inch diagonal space for that kind of resolution. The other thing is LCD monitors still uses filters on each pixel to block part of the white backlight so it kinda works like a DLP by filtering unwanted color. Also TFT has circuits built in the pixels which block light as well. All in all single chip LCD projectors are not as efficient as 3 LCD projectors.
@chandrawinata5320

how the 3lcd works obviously relies on polaris, remember without polaris it won't work and polaris is the source of its weakness...reducing light efficiency and and makes the white color unnatural...why is the polarization working system never discussed

Honestly to say this is absolutely wrong information. If LCD projector is better in terms of brightness, colour and contrast ratio, then why all digital cinema projectors are using DLP technology. LCD fade up slowly upon long use and reduces the image quality which is so weird from my personal experience. Now a days when ever we think of buying a new projector we think of only DLP. Sorry to say ur video is a crap, collect proper information......LCD projectors are never been a brighter one only because of lcd panels which absorbs light to greater extent.

+zark212 : Many Epson for business, like the EB-435W or the expensive EB-475W. Without forgetting the EB-X6, the EB-W12, etc ... they all have a green tint, some of them make " green " whites on the top and purple " whites " on the bottom. Blacks are a dark blue. The pixel matrix is also clearly visible. I have a Optoma H180X, it performs much better than any Epson under 1000 € ... and I paid it 345 € ( it was launched at about 600-700 € ) ! Of course, I spent some time in the menus to configure it manually. Deep blacks, accurate and vivid colors, the white is ... white, almost no pixel matrix visible, and still enough luminosity on ECO mode. Everybody is impressed with it, even people having a 800€ Samsung TV, etc ... ! And I'm sure I still can have a better image with a Optoma HD151X or 161X. The only thing that can bother people with DLP projectors is the rainbow effect, but I got used to it pretty quickly. And I'm sure manu people can.

Subway2400 Thanks for the reply Subway and the info. I have never had those Epson models but the LCD ones I have used for about 15 years never had any issues like the ones you mentioned. I also have multiple Optoma models and am really impressed with them and like you say the quality is surprisingly good given there price to performance ratio. Yes the Rainbow effect of single chip can be a Major detractor, I myself can see it and even with 6 speed wheels but its not all the time and for video games and movies I am very impressed with Optoma projectors. Changing the screen to grey and also putting the units on Eco mode does help and lowers it. The contrast ratio and lumens brightness are aspects which are way ahead on DLP these days compared to what we used to have to pay from days gone bye. If someone would have told me at that time that we could get a 300 inch screen at superb definition and quality for under £250 I wouldn't have believed them.

What they don't tell you is that LCD has a higher chance of developing dead pixels, trust me, from personal experience using a lcd projector.
@artfeierman3808
@artfeierman3808 9 лет назад
***** That is true, or at least was true. Over the last 5 or so years, LCD technology has gone from inorganic panels to organic panels. I'm not sure you can find inorganic panels in any over $500 3LCD projectors anymore. Dead pixels still occur on all three technologies in manufacture, but are quality controlled out. DLP is less likely to fail but complaints about failure of the newer type panels seem to be nonexistent, of course few have pushed those newer panels past 10,000 hours of use. (10 years of 20 hours a week).

Robin Campfens You are going to be hard pressed to find a 3 chip DLP under $8000, You will find it impossible to locate a 3LCD projector over $8000. The average price of a 3 chipper is still well into the $25,000+ range. But even then, entry level 3 chippers won't match that (dynamic iris enhanced) black levels of the better 3LCDs, or great LCoS (3 panel) projectors like the JVCs and Sonys
@zark212
@zark212 9 лет назад
Art Feierman I noticed Optoma have a new projector out recently which has LED and no Rainbow effect from the DLP. Its under $2500 and apparently is very good.
@PSKResearch
@PSKResearch 4 года назад
It's comparing an expensive high-end 3-LCD projector with a low end 1-DLP cheaper projector. "Rainbow effect" is eliminated in modern projectors with higher speed color wheels, or in 3-chip DLP projectors that essentially separate the colors exactly the same way as the 3-LCD projector does. The fact is, you get higher light transmission/efficiency per chip, better contrast ratios, & sharper images with no "screen door" effect with DLP. After years of heat & use, the LCD fades & gets blotchy, while the DLP remains the same as new (mirrors don't fade or get weak over time & heat like LCDs). Almost all projectors in the cinema today use DLP projectors.

I know im late but DLPs have a better contrast ratio along with a faster response time than 3LCDs. Also DLPs are usually brighter than 3LCDs since they don't require polarizing filters for which LCDs needs to function properly. LCDs over years will become blotchy because of the heat generated by the lamp. DLP models won't suffer from this problem because the pixels are mirrors made of aluminium and reflect the heat energy away versus absorbing it like LCD. Black levels look like light gray on LCD where as DLP gets darker and looks more realistic.
@kavya1638
@kavya1638 7 лет назад
LCD is definitely more colorful, however they sacrifice aperture to get that extra light/color. You end up with a screen door effect that can be seen even far off distance. Curious if any LCD projectors are used in Theaters anywhere or if it's all DLP?

This is worng 3 lcd will never come closer to DLP. LCD losses brightness as needed to be passed to 2 polarizers and the lcd panel itself. For that brightness of the light has to be increased. This will cause the lcd projector lacking the ablility to produce darker areas properly on the screen. Where are in DLP it works by reflecting light on millions of tiny mirrors. Which can produce different shades of gery. When integrated with a color wheel it can produce millions of color which an lcd projector can't. This video is not true according to my knowledge and experiences.
@wowitskevin
@wowitskevin 10 лет назад
This is complete misinformation. DLP tends to have higher brightness, NOT 3LCD. The light in a single chip DLP is REFLECTED whereas in 3LCD, the light must pass through multiple filters and then through the LCD's themselves. LCD is HORRIBLE for video watching.
@camelCased

@wowitskevin

As someone who has owned both DLP and 3LCD projectors, the DLP is far superior for home theater. Video is MUCH smoother and you do not get the dreaded "screen door effect" that you get with LCD projectors. LCD is better suited for classrooms and presentations. Projectors that are used in theaters are all a form of DLP technology. Also, if you compare other brands, Epson is the only one still marketing LCD technology for home use. All other brands have moved to DLP.
@camelCased
@camelCased 9 лет назад
I found this article: www.projectorcentral.com/lcd_dlp_comparison.htm?page=LCD-Advantages-and-Limitations which explains why 3LCD projectors are evolving an are targeted at home theater systems. Of course, DLPs are evolving, too - using LEDs instead of rotating wheels and lighting etc. For some periods LCD is the leader, then DLP gets noticeable improvements, and so the competition continues. I guess, they both are good technologies, but somehow LCD approach seems more future proof to me because it's generally good idea to get rid of all moving parts, even if they are microscopic DLP mirrors.
@artfeierman3808
@artfeierman3808 9 лет назад
wowitskevin Screen door effect? Really, yes if you are buying sub-$600 3LCD projectors that aren't 1080p resolution, but with a good home theater projector (LCD or DLP) on a 100" screen you won't see any screen door effect even at 10 feet back (but you might seem some pixilation that close on white credits on a black background - and slightly more so on 3LCD. Screen door effect pretty much went away with HD, and today's panels which have a far smaller masking area, so are less visible. But DLP masking is smaller still, but, folks, it's a non-issue.

+Williams B LEE Not without flaws like colour wheel rainbow effect and colour brightness. The material of the colour wheel and the amount of light hitting it determines the DLP colour brightness, LCD I find superior in this regard.
@Subway2400
@Subway2400 8 лет назад
+zark212 : DLP colour brightness is not a problem with the " briliant color " setting. If you're ready to lose some of the overall brightness, as the more you add " brilliant color " the more the white segment of the wheel is used. Hence less accurate colors.
@zark212
@zark212 8 лет назад
+Subway2400 Good info Subway2400 and very useful. I still like LCD in this regard but things like dust and alignment on older units can be a pain in the rump. If only single chip DLP could use a different approach than a colour wheel, I like how everything is sealed and low maintenance but the brightness of colour and rainbow effect can detract from what otherwise are extraordinary projectors for the money. Who would have ever thought we could get a 300 inch screen for £250. This particular benefit is something I applaud DLP for.
@Subway2400
@Subway2400 8 лет назад
+zark212 : Old DLP projectors are not nice too, they tend to have a much more pronounced rainbow effect. However, on most new projectors, it's barely visible. I mean, I know they are here, I see them sometimes when I quickly move my eyes on purpose, but I do not care. I guess that people who can't stand the DLP projectors are aware of the rainbow effect and focus too much on it. Anyways, as single-chip projectors work with the DMD chip reflecting one color at the time, the rainbow effect can't be avoided. Only 3-chips DLP projectors, which display the 3 colors at the same time, do not produce any rainbow. There still is one way to lower the effect, by making the wheel spin faster, but the DMD chip and its micromirrors must be able to switch faster too. As for maintenance, I think one must keep their DLP projectors away from dust for two reasons. The first being the lack of filter : dust goes everywhere in the projector, some people having problem with dust in the light path. The second is ( with much dust ) the risk of overheating the DMD device, resulting in dead micromirros and a myriad of little black and white spots. LCD projectors are not that bad on paper, but in real life ... many ( not all ) are far from being good projectors.
@zark212
@zark212 8 лет назад
+Subway2400 Absolutely yes the old 2 and 4 speed wheels tended to show up Rainbow quite a bit.I know what you mean by new projectors and the 6 speed variants out there, The rainbow effect was the first thing I looked for when going from LCD to DLP and a Family member noted it straight away thinking there was something wrong with the image. Its like a double edged sword to a certain degree as years ago a £250 projector would have been considered a joke and a gimmick and not taken seriously and yet today we have image quality which defies belief and is exceptional given the price. Its just the rainbow effect which is the price to pay I guess and like you say its more pronounced on different models than others. On the plus side the use of a single chip where everything is aligned and integrated does help as opposed to 3 LCD panels which need critical alignment. I have had over 50 projectors and stripped some right down to repair them and the dust issue can plague LCD. I like DLP sealed units and the fact you are pretty much guaranteed that things will be intact if the unit has been taken care off. Yes you are spot on, 3 chip dmd are the way to go for quality and assurance and its something I would gladly invest in if I didnt have so many projectors. Thanks for mentioning the faster wheel, This was something I mentioned before and I was most curious if a faster wheel would cure the rainbow. That clears it up as yes the mirrors would need to move faster as well. I did notice on the video that a lot of light is apparently lost on contact with the colour wheel. I wonder if a more sealed wheel environment would pay dividends in this respect? The first LCD I had was ( Sanyo plc 200pb) and it was huge and you couldnt change the bulb yourself and had scart RBG. I then collected NEC units ( rrp £2200 ) and also PDP panels ( Public display panels). These were and still are extremely good units being Small, low heat, great picture. I still have them as its nice to go back now and again. The DLP option was very appealing and I was surprised at the quality at such low prices and immense contrast ratio. I know some things like putting the bulb on eco mode or a grey screen can help lower rainbows. I think if they got rid of rainbows altogether I would recommend DLP a lot more, Some people are more prone to it than others but I still have to keep reminding myself of the price of the DLP and what size of image and quality I am getting. I use Optoma 6 speed units and cannot fault the price vs quality ratio on them. I put The Hobbit on a 100 inch screen and a Friend couldnt believe the quality, He was like No way thats incredible. In the UK I dont think projectors are advertised enough, Like in Tesco they have a small area devoted to televisions and not many people know they could have a huge screen 5 times bigger for the same price if not cheaper. They should have them on display so folks can experience what its like.

But one did fail while working after about 1.100 hrs .it was the Optoma .DLP . BECAUSE the spinning color wheel broke (you no it spins at 7200 rpms) after 2 yrs and they no about the issue with color wheels braking .So the next one ,was a 3LCD chip one ,no moving parts (except the fan ,)..and just a bit better in the picture.Stop listening to all the writers b/s .and go with your own eyes..That's if you can find a showroom running 2-3 projectors of different kinds running on big screens so you can see the different for yourself ...good luck on that' one...4K all the way baby
