I always ride my bicycle with right brake for the front wheel, and the left brake for the rear wheel. The reason is simple: I also ride motorcycles, and this is the way they are all set up. After a while, it becomes a reflex. A lot of my cycling riding buddies find this to be a little bit awkward, but honestly it is absolutely the first thing I ever change on my bike!
@CharlesOuimet
@CharlesOuimet 2 года назад
Good to know! Yeah it's definitely a good idea to have the same brakes as motorcycle!
@jreitsma
@jreitsma 2 года назад
Same! There is nothing scarier than jumping than pulling the "wrong" brake lever... lol
@bobtahar
@bobtahar 2 года назад
The reason I prefer rear brake on right because I'm a motorcycle rider. I always engage rear brake first to slowdown.. and engage both to fully stop and always engage rear brake when at a complete stop. Since both brakes on the motorcycle are on the right side... it becomes a natural for me to use right hand the most for braking and rear brake is the most brake I used.
@dzrdza
@dzrdza 2 года назад
@@bobtahar For me this seems very counterintuitive as fas motorcycles go, since rear brake has way less power than the front. I ride a sport-oriented bike, where you have to step (and I mean really step) on the front brake when you want to stop immediately, otherwise you will be in a world of pain. Rear brake in this case is only for support (if I had to say, I would say no more than 20%), since the weight of motorcycle is forward-biased, and since most bikes have 2 large front discs in comparison to 1 small rear disc.
@GoodFellasBpong
@GoodFellasBpong 2 года назад
@@dzrdza he is correct. I often tell people buying new bikes that the rear brake is to slow down, the front brake is to stop. You have the use them both to stop safely, too much back and you skid, too much front and your over the bars.

I just fairly recently (a couple years ago) heard of starting at the top of the bar for the wrap after well over 30 years of riding. I decided to try it after my tape came loose after a couple of days of very wet gravel rides. Of course the bar tape was coming unraveled. Luckily, it was the last day and near the end of the ride. I've since adopted it on my road bike too. I think it is a better way to do it. The only draw back is the tape overlaps so that the exposed edge is pushed against while you are on the hoods. It hasn't really been an issue though.

In Australia rear brake is always on the left and front on right. Most countries that have right hand drive cars and drive on the left side of road, the bikes were set up that way so when riding and using hand signals for turning etc you would be using your right hand to do so. So being set up this way you had use of rear brake and not front.
@CharlesOuimet
@CharlesOuimet 2 года назад
Ohh really!! Good to know the reason why
@shazwankamel2187
@shazwankamel2187 2 года назад
I would disagree. Im from KL, Malaysia and most ppl here set their rear brake on right lever. I would think reason for this is that most ppl are right handed so it makes it more intuitive to have rear on right; otherwise you might endo if you press hard on front brakes. Nothing to do with right hand drive cars i think.
@davidd1492
@davidd1492 2 года назад
@@shazwankamel2187 so if you are giving a hand signal with your right hand(which you should be if you are riding on left side of road) you will be braking with front brakes if need be. Good luck with that.

Very nice. I just built an Ekar bike up too. Surprised you got away with skipping the bleed. I had a bunch of bubbles. Also Surprised you kept the cable to the rear derailleur so long. Especially on a gravel bike I worry about catching that on a passing branch.

Yes, that's the way I have it on my Marinoni. The sun never melts the electrical tape on the top and it never comes unglued. If I need to adjust the levers or install a bar end mirror, I actually have two pieces, one going up from the bottom in the traditional way and one Italian style starting from the top, as shown here. I put a single strip of tape over the joint under the lever body.

You may be using grease now, but with the bearing cups being pressed into bare carbon, you will likely have to put retaining compound and activator in there eventually as the resin gets deformed by the stresses of pedaling. The PTFE grease he's using is great for first installs, but probably won't be supportive enough later on.

Hi Charles, Great video! Two questions: fulcrum says the Rapid Red can take up to 46mm tires. Did you actually tried to fit 50? And regarding the bike, it’s a beauty, though I think 3T missed an opportunity to fully integrate the cables through the stem into the frame. If you call your gravel bike so aero. What are your thoughts?
@CharlesOuimet
@CharlesOuimet 2 года назад
Thanks dude! Ohhh I never actually check the tire size, only the frame. I currently have 47mm and they fit great! Agreed on the cable, it's a bit of a shame that they are external!! My Chinese Winspace G2 gravel bike has internal cables...
@PaganiZondaF650hp
@PaganiZondaF650hp 2 года назад
I guess what they mean is they only recommend up to 46mm with that internal rim width. You can still mount 50mm or more but the rim bead won’t support the tires as ideal as wider mtb rims would
@Sem84
@Sem84 2 года назад
@@PaganiZondaF650hp yes, I think so too. But would you risk ignoring the manufacturers guidelines? Fitting a 2.1 inch tire at 20 PSI, and letting it run from your rim in a nasty corner? Or do I misread your comment? No sense to fit something on your bike if it puts you in serious danger.

@@CharlesOuimet it really has nothing to do with Campy beyond their seals, frame dimensions are generally not to spec for a bearing to perform properly (as published by the bearing manufacturer). Campy uses the Hirth joint on their spindle because they press the bearings on the spindle itself. This places the bearing in tension and improves durability and lowers resistance. Bearings/cups pressed into the frame are under compression, coupled with misaligned or undersized bottom brackets and you get what you get.

Чому ніхто і ніде неговорить що рами на карбоні самі недовговічні із усіх рам ? А так то 3 T виглядає дуже круто 22:10

Those cranks should be spinning more in that spin test. My Chinese carbon frame with Chinese bearings spin more than that one… apart from that, nice bike

crank spin test doesn't really equals good bb/crank

@@afpx8065 Unloaded bearings spinning freely doesn't mean much as to how it's going to perform under load and in the real world. For example, slightly loose bearings, with the seals and all grease removed, will perform extremely well if you just spin them around freely. They'll obviously be terrible in real world applications.

I might be a minority, but why is the euro convention to have the front brake on the left. Motorcycles all have the front brake to the right lever. Most people are right handed and therefore their master and generally better controlled hand is the right. The consequences of grabbing too much front brake is normally worse than a hand full of rear.
