4 Stages of Raising Children According to Tibetan Wisdom

BRIGHT SIDE

They say that bringing up kids is the biggest responsibility a person can have, and there are tons of books on the topic. The Tibetans follow a unique 4-stage system to shape their children into responsible, self-sufficient, and respectful individuals.
During the first stage, from birth till the age of 5, kids are usually incredibly curious about everything around them. But they haven’t had any experience to learn from, and they can’t make rational decisions yet. So if they do something wrong or dangerous, you should look and act scared and try to shift their attention to something else. Don’t forget that your kid will never get this time back. Let them explore the world on their own terms.
Another 5 years down the road, until your child’s 10th birthday, you should talk to them as if they’re a “slave”. You see, you can’t just nurture their privileged “royal” side and neglect the diligent “servant” one. This phase is crucial because it balances everything out.
It’s important to build a friendship with your kids during the 3rd stage, from 10 to 15. Kids at this age are starting to form their own personal opinions and tastes, and they want to share them with you. Never judge them for their views or interests, that’ll only drive them away from you.
When the time comes for your child’s 15th birthday, you’ll be entering the fourth and the final phase. It’s time to respect them as an individual. Your child will be independent, self-sufficient, and respectful towards you as their parent and to others.

TIMESTAMPS
The first stage: before the age of 5 0:38
The second stage: from 5 to 10 years old 2:08
The third stage: from 10 to 15 years old 3:33
The fourth stage: from age 15 and older 5:30
SUMMARY
-During the first stage, from birth till the age of 5, everything kids know and see plays a major role in forming their character and can remain in their subconscious for life. According to the Tibetan system, parents should treat their kid like a little “king” or “queen” during this stage.
-The age from 5 to 10 is time to talk to the kids as if they’re a “slave”. It is the time to set some small goals for your little one, guide them towards achievement, and teach them to be ready for the consequences that come from not realizing one’s goals.
-For the next 5 years, you should treat your child as an equal. You can even switch roles and ask them for advice. This will encourage their independence, critical thinking, and even self-confidence.
-By the time your child is 15, their personality is basically fully formed. You can give advice, but it’s a little too late to teach.

I think every kid has to be loved disciplined and able to make their own mistakes. I am a new dad for a few weeks now and I think I will have a very similar approach it is a very tough routine but if you truly love them and I am sure every parent loves their child you can make them happen as far as the approach goes. Good luck to everyone and hope you will all do your hardest to raise them even though it is tough sometimes. The fruit is worth every cry, struggle and heartache. Love you guys and I know you all will make it. No luck needed

My mom told me that children are subordinates and should be afraid of their parents. She said that kids are not equal to adults. I was ten when she told me that. I tried to tell her that I don’t want to be afraid, that I want trust her, and that I want to be able to tell her anything without being afraid of what she might punish me with. She DIDN’T listen! Man, i hated her so much for the next 2 days.

Alexandriasw This honestly sounds like something that should be reported to school administrators [or the school board if you don't think the principal will care.] Sometimes the people in charge have no idea what's actually going on in your classroom and wouldn't approve of it if they knew. You could find a way to report it anonymously if you feel uncomfortable talking about it. It's your school and you should have some say about the kind of things you're being taught! Another reason to do this is to protect her kids; everyone who works in a school environment is required by law to investigate and report to the authorities if they think it's possible that a student may be getting abused at home. The identity of the person who made the report can't be revealed to the family. Just don't share the info with anyone who seems like they might look out for that teacher first instead of caring about kids. If you have a school psychologist that you trust I would maybe start with that person and let them know so they can keep an eye on her kids.

This is exactly how Turks raise their children. (I'm witness for 5 years of this behavior) It's very effective and no child grows up with any insecurities, complexes and are fully confidant of theirselves without the arrogance. Plus they are always quick to offer help to friends and family in need. It's a stark contrast to american children.

Knew one girl that didn't trust herself, looking to others, and made a lot of mistakes in her life due to the over protection thing. However, knew another girl, with controlling /overprotective father, who was rebellious at first then became a psychopathic control freak herself. Not sure these rules are one size fits all.

My mom yells at me and critiques me most of the time when I talk to her so I just don’t anymore.. it makes me feel sad bc my best friend has a great relationship with her mom, her mom is basically her best friend.
@-Vitalis-
@-Vitalis- 6 лет назад
That means her mom is failing badly at parenting. Parents are parents, never friends. They're an authority and should practice what they preach, which usually never happens due to weak morals and lack of vision. I know it sounds weird, but you'll understand one day. And when that day comes, you'll be grateful about your mother's attitude, while watching how your best friend will slowly start to keep away from her parents... Nothing personal against you or your friend, but things are heading that way with the actual scenario.
@bithikadutta8593
@bithikadutta8593 5 лет назад
@@-Vitalis- I really don't agree with your views. I don't even talk properly to her now and we can just forget about later on. My bestie is way closer to her mom and that's why they can trust each other. And parents are humans too and they make mistakes and we can learn from them anyway
@-Vitalis-
@-Vitalis- 5 лет назад
@@bithikadutta8593 Trusting your parents, which means accepting rules from them and showing love from both sides... is way different than being "best friends". Parents are NEVER friends of their sons. That's plain wrong. Do teachers are friends of their pupils? OF COURSE NOT. They're teachers, a figure of authority. Same with parents. People are so afraid of the word "authority" these days. Perhaps they ignore that being an _authority_ is, first of all, having moral authority, which means they know how and when to show love towards people. Yeah, we all make mistakes and we can learn from them. I agree on that. Have a nice day.

It's Candy Time Boys and Girls Yeah I’m afraid that you’re entirely wrong. No one wants a parent who treats a child as a subordinate until they are actually adults themselves. Mutual equal treatment is a necessary requisite for any relationship between a parent and former child after that person becomes an adult. Please do not become a parent like that and actually watch the video we are all commenting on. Peace

Quiet type fanboy Google "INFP child" There's nothing wrong with fear, it's normal and some feel it more than others. What you do when you're afraid is what matters. Accept fear, be comfortable with it, listen to it. It takes time, patience and effort but once you master it, fear along with other emotions, will be a tool that will help guide you. In time you will realize that fear doesn't stop you it alerts you to consequences, ultimately you choose your own actions.

We, Qazaqs (Kazakhs), have the same system, but the first stage goes till 7 years, than the second stage is till 12 years. There is also a “bridge stage” between 12 and 13 years. After this stage child is equal to adult person, is quasi teenager. Then we have for every 12 years a specific name and responsibilities/capabilities/tasks for every 12year period of life.

I agree with the first 5 years. I also found that the second stage of serving can be in many areas like sports teams and learning new skills as well as extra curricular activities. I did not place my kids in too much of a servitude role here as I had too much responsibility at that stage and gave a break to my kids. We were taught to parent and not be equals or pals with kids from ages 10-15 and that stage was saved for adulthood.from 15 on wed be friends did not happen with two of my kids as that was the time the rebelled heavily and swore spread their wings and did not want to hear from you, but still needed you for drives and money. Once the rebellious independent stage is over ( in the west) from about 15-20, then many kids who are now young adults regroup with their parents as friends if lucky and the parents didn’t mess up in early childhood. Whew!

I have a 3 yr old currently and he’s very curious, energetic, emotional, he definitely established his character now I feel...I’m interested to see him get to stage 2 because my brother is currently 10 turning 11 and he’s recently been lying about doing hw to my parents..it’s very very challenging to be a parent..I’m amazed at individuals who didn’t have parents and become successful for themselves..I hope one day my son can surpass his predecessors and become a better person than I could have ever thought..adversity is real for humans

This Is an Overrated Image where did you hear that? Because many Indians actually have festivals for daughters being born and as they grow up. Boys get little to none. Also, a lot of women (of course not all) nowadays are given pretty equal education opportunities. But of course I don’t know everything and would like to learn more

This makes me so sad for my mother she had me and my sister ten years apart and she was very worrysome her whole life I blame it on me for being so rebellious from a young age to teenage hood just as she began to stop worrying about me my sister became a teenager with lots of fears and no confidence and later turned to make some bad mistakes. My poor mother will never stop worrying :( I really hope people live many lives so the next she can live at peace.

I’m 11 and I agree with this method! I’m in “Stage 3” and I really feel like my parents need to treat me more like an equal. I’m not very comfortable telling them things because I’m very insecure and scared that they won’t think I’m old enough to do things like go to the movies with a friend or just decide on the spot to go to someone’s house

ChubbyBunny Rivera i don't see the issue in being friends with your children. as a parent, i wouldn't have it and other way. i would say i have respectful children in being friends with them... it teaches trust, and it also shows that. you have a parent/child relationship in which isn't dictator/subject. Many of us are conditioned in the ways of "a child is not to be head, only seen" or "do as i say and not as i do"... but our children are watching us...

For me, my past didn't go completely well. When I was 2 we moved to the other side of the country. This had a negative impact on mom. Not being able to find work or connect with the locals she was eventually taken into a clinic with depression for 6 months. All attention went to her. This whole situation caused me to be smart as a 12 year old and emotionally vulnerable like a 2 year old when I was 5. Of course children are merciless when you are "different" and I was super different. For the 8 years that followed I didn't have any friends and I was on a constant survival mode. Mom was better, but because she would freak out every time I was bullied it caused the bullies to have double the fun. They thought it was hilarious when my mom would yell angry at their parents about them bullying me. I was diagnosed with autism by the age of 10. And although in secondary life turned out well and that third stage I got through well and my parents too, I can say that the first two stages in my childhood were really messed up. But it wasn't my parents fault. It was just circumstance. I can never blame my mom for her mentally getting sick or being over protective when actually I should have learned how to protect myself. Note to self: if ever I have children and I notice they get bullied, I will make sure they get taught judo. Am just happy I turned out okay. I miss mom every single day, she passed 10 years ago when I was only 19. But I am thankful to have an amazing dad still. I pray that one day I will marry a man like my dad, who understands that I am not the easiest person but is willing to go through everything together and will stay faithful in good times and bad times. My parents really went through some bad times but whatever they faced they faced it together and I pray that one day I will find a husband who can be like this too. But then again I fear I will stay alone for the rest of my life and never have kids. Because loyalty is not something my generation understands. My generation only understands that when things get tough you file for divorce or cheat and wait for your partner to find out and file for a divorce. 😭

I wish my parents raised me like this. I would be a much more confident and independent person today if they had. I had overprotective parents. Was spoiled and sheltered my entire life, given no independence or freedom to make my own decisions. In fact, I pretty much was given 0 responsibility, as they had did everything for me. I understand that they love me a lot, but pampering me was doing nothing but harm to me.

i really wish my parents raised me this way. for me under 5 years was the "if you try to act like a kid you'll be spanked" phase, and then the "do absolutely everything for your parents" phase. Your mom spills something, kid's fault! gotta make me clean it up. Now I'm 11 and on the "you'll be yelled at if you try to have feelings and opinions" phase.

This only proves my parents don't know how to raise children 😂 during stage one, I was raised correctly, but then in stage two, there was no guidance or goals or anything like that, then in stage three I was depressed and alone and being told to do things I didn't know how to do and now I'm fifteen and I don't like who I am, I can't set goals or keep them, and I can't do much work since I lacked the proper direction. My parents scold me for being unable to keep up when I never learned how. I spent stage two rotting my brain practically.

I think that this method is more wide spread than Tibet. This was how I was raised and my ancestors migrated from Europe. It is a good teaching. I heard a person once say that something was a German saying when making an international speech. I had heard it was an Alaskan saying first. So maybe what we learn and what we know is more widespread than we know

Tibetan rule is also, the first son has to go to the monastery, the youngest daughter inherits the house. But it is true, childhood is the most important thing and like this video it should be taught at school. Especially unplanned or unwanted children often have a traumatic childhood. This is what often turns them into criminals or even murderers when grown up. Since the government doesn't care how children are raised they actually are co-perpetrator when children turn out as serial killer or felons. All this criminal energy develops in early childhood.
