Just because they don't have armies does not mean that they don't exist in the lore (Or i guess you could use Imperial Guards as replacement since their equipment is Standard Construct based). For example the Macharian crusade brought in more than a thousand worlds into the fold of the Imperium, amongst them many nations and states. Persepolis, a former Imperial world that had lost contact with the Imperium at large refused to return to the fold and held on to their independence, and became the first planet to fall in the Macharian crusades.

@Chris Hansen Rebellions are not exactly rare in the Imperium, at least in comparison to the Tau (One secession state), Imperial worlds are lost to a myriad of reasons every year and in many cases it is due to a planet rebelling, in some cases due to Chaos other times due to the people having enough of the high Thithes. The Macharian worlds where not lost in the age of Strife but rather in the 35: Millenium and for more recent examples we have: The Badab War, where several chapters of Astartes and many Imperial worlds rebelled against the Imperium and had to be forced back into the fold and the astartes destroyed (901-913.M41) and then there was the Sabbat worlds where in 741.M41 the sector governor was forced to flee and caused the start of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. These where all sector wide rebellions. For smaller example we have the Severan Dominate in which a sub-sector revolted against the Imperium and that one is still ongoing. And your original point was that there where no independent human states and no break away states, and in both my post i have showed plenty of examples from the breath of the Imperiums existence. So the Tau Empire only has the Farshight enclaves to worry about when it comes from secession states, while the Imperium just had several of theirs blow through Cadia and cut the Imperium in twain. So many human chaos factions after all.

It's so interesting how Tau haters pile in on a single quote from DOW (which is not even acknowledged as canon) made by a biased imperial, in which he doesn't even outright state that castration happens. To believe that you would have to completely ignore that humans compose the third biggest part of Tau armies (behind Tau and kroot), are the most widespread non-tau race on Tau worlds (including humans being on tau home world and other worlds deep inside their empire) and that lots of worlds join Tau willingly and happily, to leave imperial slavery.

@Chris Hansen Actually the Imperium will have you slave away in a smog filled manofactorum, working long hours with little safety and mandatory praying sessions. They are actively sacrificing Humans lives and well-being to maintain the Imperium. There is of course room to argue that considering the technological restraint the Imperium has placed this necessary for the survival of Mankind. But in the end, the goal of the Imperium is not "betterment" but rather "survival". In addition, both Tau and Humans consider themselves "Superior" but while Humanity wants to kill every other advanced species in the universe, the Tau wants to govern them to ensure the supremacy of the Greater Good. This does not mean mass sterilization (and actually used by the Imperium as well) or brutal oppression, but rather a life of equal living standards as your Tau equivalents and subtle propaganda (which the Imperium uses as well). If you where to compare the living standards and freedoms of a Human outside of the ruling classes in the Imperium and the average Human in Tau Space you will probably find that life is sweeter on the Tau side. On the flip side, there is a reason why the Mechanicus has the restrictions that they have and the Tau might be heading into dangerous waters with their AI developments. And despite everything, despite every overworked hive worlder, every miner dying of poor equipment and every suffering soul in the imperium, their suffering is not in vein as they fabricate the materials and equipment that keep the real horrors at bay, Like the Orks who would gleefully slaughter and enslave humanity, like the Eldar who manipulates and sacrifice untold numbers of humans to achieve their self-serving goal, like the Tyranids who seek to consume all. And the Imperium stand against the forces of chaos who would drown the galaxy in madness and cruelty. In the end while the Tau empire might be better to live in, i fear that they are not ready to handle the sheer scale of the horrors the Imperium faces...... At least not yet.

Religious standards are not concrete and are dictated by those with the authority, power, and popularity to back them up. In 40k that is the government of the empire of man. The rules imposed on people by a religion(or any ideal) need not be fair or just to be. This means a given religious orthodoxy could demand that you commit suicide when taken prisoner by an enemy and if you don't do it then you are a heretic, and it would be so regardless of how you decide to re-flavor that religion to suit yourself in that circumstance. In this case the tau human civilians are working together with xenos of a waring empire and fighting against the empire of man. It'd be like a Christian saying they follow the Christian faith whilst making sacrifices to Satan and burning down Christian churches.

Well this is a bit complicated actually for 1 major reason and to minor reasons.The major reason is the Inquisition would have no problem killing you if your a planetary Governor or laying siege to your world.The 1st conditional reason is if your a shrine world the Sisters of battle on the planet will go to your home and set you and your family on fire the other conditional reason is your regiment of imperial guard will likely turn on you.Another reason is trade embargoes if your a hive planet and the imperium blockades your planet and don't immediately invade you will die of starvation.

Would a marine join the tau: Never. He'd rather die first. Pretty much, the only time space marines betray the emperor is when they get corrupted to chaos. You are talking about ultra mind control on steroids for 90% of their lives, plus biochemical reinforcement. He might WORK with one against a greater foe (and pretty much any other army in Warhammer are a greater threat than the Tau) but to join would be an abandonment of their duty to the emperor.

What if he had to choose between staying in the empire but thus leading to its fall or at least severe crippling or doing what every other would see as betraying it to the tau and thus saving it. Doomed if he dont, outcast if he does. And now lets say he did choose to betray the empire and thus save it, he has now the choice to go back and die as heretic or live with the tau and continue to try to protect the empire wherever possible. Marines are sworn to protect before anything else, so imo it would make sense for him to try to continue to protect the empire even if he cant do so from within anymore.

Maybe they figure the Tau are a better example on how to be than the Imperium, and they figure the best they can do is to use their own abilities as leverage to promote peace between the empires. Or something. Or maybe they have been a renegade chapter for so long that they have gone through a generation or two of astartes and don't care about the Emperor as much any more. Etc.

In the long run it wouldn't create a lasting peace between the Tau and the Imperium. The Tau's belief in the Greater Good would cause them to continue to expand into Imperial space and try to absorb Imperial worlds into their empire. And those who don't join will be killed, so war is inevitable.

Captain Harlock all to often the good life you see in the tau empire is fantasy or highly exaggerated at mets its trading one asswhole government for an other slightly better but still asshole government. More often than not human especially those that keep the imperial faith are treated as 2ed class citizens and when the tau take a human world they often purge huge amounts of the human population because humans breed a lot faster than tau and that can lead to problems. At best the tau just have really good PR and you know that freedom of religion the Tau offer is eather other complete bull shit or if they do allow freedom of religion don't be surprised that you have a Chaos uprising because the tau don't under stand how Choas works. And while the dark gods might not bother to much with corrupting the tau as thier souls don't give much energy to the dark gods, humans remain their favourite snack. For often than not you'll see a Khorn or slannish uprising on tau words as of the four big guys they are the least sneaky. Etherals aren't worshipped as gods unlike the Emperor.

Rennoc717 'Godlike' is a gross stretch. Ethereals are simply the ruling caste, and Tau are bred and conditioned to obey and respect the caste system. Tau don't mind if integrated humans continue worshipping the Emperor so long as they acknowledge Ethereal secular authority. So that confirms the Tau aren't a theocracy. Their 'Greater Good' ideology is more of a militant philosophy than religion.

From a philosophical perspective the Emperor himself stated that the Imperium was doomed following the Horus heresy and failure of the web way project. If a human truly believes that by siding with the Tau they will bring about the ultimate survival of humanity as a species then you could argue they are more faithfully supporting the spirit of what the Emperor wanted for mankind than even the Astartes or the Ecclesiarchs do.

Cosmopolitan, powerful, wealthy, educated, and having a decent standard of living. Then the Roman Empire collapsed, became fractured, torn apart by civil war, and what eventually took on its name was the “Holy Roman Empire.” The HRE is the best, real life equivalent, to the Imperium of Man we have.

Sean Conley They would be trained as regular guardsmens, because their entire purpose is to serve as a troops that is acceptably effective both at range and at melee, whereas tau suck at melee and are great marksmens and kroots are masters at melee but sucks at distance, gueve'sa are the jack of all trades
