All I know is .40 ain’t short & weak as a lot of people make it out to be. That’s not even a premium load and still did damage. Great video! Thanks

I'm one of those guys who rag on the .40 as being short & weak but the truth is, it's a great round for self & home defense. It beats the snot out of a 9mm and is right up there with the 357 Sig. But no matter what you do to the .40, it's just not a 10mm.... assuming the 10mm is loaded up to it's full potential, of course. I would not feel under gunned carrying a 40 S&W. However, most ammo manufacturers these days don't do that, unfortunately, and simply use bullets designed for the .40 instead of using bullets designed to withstand full 10mm velocities. Then, some companies like Buffalo Bore, Underwood, Double Tap and possibly a couple others actually do load the ammo to where it's supposed to be, and the chances of a bullet coming apart go way up. Ok, it's not that they aren't effective, they definitely are, but if there were more bullets designed to hold up to full velocity in the 10mm, a lot of us 10mm guys would be a lot happier! I want to see a box of bullets marked "10mm Only - Not for .40 S&W!" Now that would make me smile! You just won't see me holding my breath for that to happen! Cheers, jc

And that is why I came to refer to the 9mm as the 9 Minimal. It's little more than a warmed up .380ACP that requires a lot of high-tech bullet design to even come close to the .40S&W in both my professional and personal opinion when we are talking personal defense rounds.

Both the 40 S&W &10mm are loaded Light. You can easily push a 155gr bullet out of the 40 to 1300fps. The 10mm can easily achieve 1550fps with the same bullet

1425 out of a 165 grain bullet is pretty much considered full power in 10mm and 1250 with a 200 grain and if you get 1300 fps with a 180 that's really good too.. some companies claim those speeds & higher but don't even meet those standards when people actually test them.. I try to stick as close to those velocity's as possible.. seen a few underwood loads claim those speeds but not actually get it.. it depends on the load when it comes to underwood because some are close to advertised velocity and some aren't
@frankbrowning328
@frankbrowning328 6 месяцев назад
@@joeyphillips1181 I reload so Im more in control of what I can do with a cartridge. I dont reload for 10mm as I dont currently own one but I reload 40 S&W as hot as much of the milder 10mm factory loads. It's safe & easy to get 1100+ fps from a 180gr bullet in a 4" 40 S&W. I can also safely get 1250fps with a 155gr bullet in the same gun. 10mm is capable of much higher velocity than the 40, but few ammo companies load it to its actual safe potential and that just irritates me as a bait & switch

Ok, this is a very, very good comparison test. I wondered how much difference there is. Now I have a solid answer. In some ways there isn't a great deal. In other ways the 10 is noticably "greater" in "power". But overall performance the 40 demonstrates it's ability to deliver great results. It holds it's own even with the big boy 10. Many thanks. This is one of my first 40 carry choices way back in the late 90s when I switched from 357 mag revolver to the 40. Here it is 25 years later and still a top option.

When I made the decision to switch from 9mm - bypassing the. 45 ACP, which I've been shooting for over 50 years... yes, I am an old fart! - and going straight to 10mm, one of first bullets I tried was the 155 XTP. Ok, this was because my preferred brand, the 165 gr Speer Gold Dot had become "unobtainium!* for some unknown reason! In the past, I've had more than a little trouble with these XTP bullets, in both 9mm and 45 ACP seperating the jacket and core in my water test medium, so I wasn't holding a lot of hope for these bullets. I was pleasently surprised to find that they did not do this, even at a velocity exceeding 1300 fps! There was a huge down side, however, since they were barely able to hit 10" of penetration! Personally, I want to see 16 - 18" of penetration. This pretty much eliminated the 155 XTP. I am now working on the 180 XTP but with winter coming on fast, working with water is not in my tool bag right now! Of course, my carry ammo, the Underwood loading of the Lehigh Xtreme Defender bullets makes this every time but I wanted a bullet I could load myself as backup ammo without breaking the bank. While I can load the Lehigh bullets, my velocities are not in the class as the factory (Underwood & Lehigh velocities are the same) so I am forced by logic to use the factory ammo since these bullets work on velocity. Time will tell regarding the 180 but to honest, I usually go for a light for caliber bullet, depending on the extra velocity to get the bullet to work the way they're supposed to, e.g. 115 for 9mm & 185 for .45 ACP. The 165 gr. Gold Dot seems to me to be the perfect weight for 10mm, but alas, they seem to be no more. Speer says they are in "full production" but I haven't seen any for sale anywhere in over 2 years and they no longer even list them on their website as loaded ammo or as components! Dang it, Speer, what's up with you guys? Oh well, I certainly can't *make* them sell me their bullets but I sure wish they would get off the pot and get going again! Time will tell but I'm not holding my breath! Anyway, great test and it confirms what my testing showed, so I am grateful for that! Keep up the great work, you've been hitting the nail on the head and I love that you're using 10% ordance gel instead of clear as the results are much more dramatic than the clear gel! Cheers, jc

I saw a picture in an article by Evan Marshall of that 40 round that had been taken from a would-be rapist’s body. It looked just like that one. I used to carry that 10mm round in my custom 1911. Both are awesome loads.

I have and shoot both but .40 is a favorite of mine. The 10mm is more powerful, but really if you reload and use the right powders for both, the 10mm isn't that much faster than .40 S&W from the same barrel length, roughly 100 fps, give or take 25 fps either way.

Yeah the 10mm is more powerful. But on the basis of this test, I'd say not enough of a difference to make a difference. It validates my decision to go 357 Sig instead of 10mm. All I had to do was swap a barrel. I believe 40 is no slouch, hell, it was my EDC for many years until I fell in love with my micro-9's and 357 snubbies. 40 and 357 Sig get game time on the deer lease.
@nickadkins7765
@nickadkins7765 6 месяцев назад
In terms of ballistics almost 200fps faster, 160ft lb more energy, and almost a half inch wider stretch cavity is a VERY noticeable difference. Paul Harrell would NOT call this test "not enough difference to make a difference" as there is quite a distinct difference my friend 😅

Greater momentum over an equal sectional density, can actually unfurl a hollowpoint faster, equalizing penetration between two rounds with very different power levels. Since .357 hollowpoints are of smaller sectional area, they can penetrate further even if less powerful. Narrower projectile = less drag.

These results are a perfect example of why 10mm hollow points don't make a lot of sense in my opinion, you get almost identical performance from the considerably less expensive .40S&W which has less recoil as well. Now properly loaded 10mm hard cast are an excellent big bear defense option because the extra velocity helps a hard cast but that extra velocity causes the HP's to expand so much, so fast, they really don't give you anything more than you can get from other calibers.
@StevenRogers-hw9dj
@StevenRogers-hw9dj 6 месяцев назад
You obviously don't buy both rounds. The 10mm is generally the same price as the .40, and in the case of Hornady XTP, it's actually about 5% cheaper. If you really believe that an extra 200 FPS isn't giving you anything more, you're delusional.
@brandiwynter
@brandiwynter 6 месяцев назад
@@StevenRogers-hw9dj you're delusional if you think you're getting an extra 200fps just by buying 10mm. All of these tests have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the vast majority of so-called 10mm being sold today is actually loaded to .40S&W levels. A proper 10mm will easily outperform the .40 but that's not what's being sold. Then when you consider these weak 10mm HP's aren't giving you what they promise it's ridiculous to continue buying them and supporting these companies. You completely missed the point.

@alexskillz45

This is why I always say that 40S&W is a better choice than 10mm. 10 doesn't do anything better than 40 is and it breaks apart or deforms. Even for bear defense 10mm is has diminishing results because the velocity is too high for a projectile of that size to handle. What is needed past 40S&W is a larger caliber and that's where 45auto fills the requirements. More weight and bigger bullet resets the maximum potential. The 40S&W are relatively small bullets compared to 45auto and is already being pushed quite fast. The 10mm was created to replace the 357magnum not for being a man stopper, but for penetration of vehicles and auto glass while still inflicting damage. When 357 Magnum was first utilized, it was not killing criminals but rather making hits on them as they got away. This required them to seek a hospital which will eventually get them caught or at the very least slow down their criminal activities. It was not the predicted outcome, but it was a favorable one. If the 10 mm can achieve a similar outcome it will be effective. Everybody thinks they know why the 10 mm was eventually replaced with the 40 and 9 mm, but they have no idea. The real reason is because cars were no longer steel and difficult to penetrate. Even a 9 mm can penetrate into a modern car and the need for magnum rounds was history.
