@logandarklighter

Indeed. Looking at the original Blueprints - that would be one of the main things I might question. Back in the late 70s, when D&D was getting popular, it's "brother" sci-fi game - TRAVELLER - had each of it's ships deck plans with entire rooms dedicated to the ship computer. Even on smaller Millennium Falcon sized ships. And in the mid-late 80s, the developers of Traveller revamped the basic rules, background lore, deck maps and overall concepts to include MUCH more powerful and smaller computers. Even going beyond what was then current tech. They had realized over the previous decade in the 80s that they needed to both update and "future proof" their concepts better. No more "central computer room". But instead a distributed set of computers working redundantly and in parallel to help run each ship. The central core of the Enterprise made sense for the 60s. But doesn't really beyond the 70s and 80s.

The park and running track feel a lot like the vibe they were going with for Phase II, so you can always say this is the Enterprise in a later refit in the last two years of that five year mission, when things like the computer core had been relocated.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: your recreation is a work of art and a service to all of us trekkies. Pay no attention to nay-sayers. It's very easy to criticize , but not as easy to actually build something. In regards to the bodies of water I think it would be reasonable to assume that if the ship's tilt went beyond a point at which the water would start to spill, a containing force field would be deployed, up until things returned to normal.

I love that you give thought to the third dimension with your ship! Most plans only lay out rooms as though every single area fits into a single "cake layer" of the ship, but this interior "Central Park" area is exactly what I'd need for some recreation on a five-year mission. I do hope there are plans to include a wet bar!

I'm still am advocate of having huge power transfer infrastructure for the phasers and torpedoes below, but I think this is absolutely beautiful. You've really used the tapered 3d space to great advantage. I personally always thought that the huge computer core was mainly storage of data the size of which we can't comprehend nowadays. All of those 3D prints are fantastic. You've been saying from the beginning that this is an original model, and though you've mentioned the Franz Joseph plans a few times, you're only taking inspiration from them, not building them. That's what makes me look forward to these new vids so much - every week I see some new part of the Enterprise that I haven't seen before. I can clearly see that the FJ plans have had some influence, but most of the model is completely original, and I really enjoy seeing these fresh takes on the various areas of the ship that were never seen on screen.

I find this incredibly fascinating. As a young 20 something I had the idea of a 1:1 balsa wood model based on the FASA deck plans you clearly have. Then college and career rose it's ugly head. According to Canon there were originally 12 ships of the line; 13 if you go by the decals in the AMT model. Now, your plans are for the Lady E. Given the number of ships, there is no reason to think the Star Fleet Corp of Engineers didn't experiment with alternative internal deck designs in order to maximize space and or eliminate monotony due to crew transfers. Remember, per Canon these ships were constructed at several different planetary shipyards. Evidently I've put considerable thought into this over the last 50 odd years. Yes, I'm odd and embrace it. 😉 Also, I wish we were on the same side of the big pond. I've been developing painting skills over the last year and a half w/ 6mm Battletech universe and GHQ military miniatures ( like your Bacus minis ). I would like to be able to assist painting your furnishings in this endeavor. But alas, geography. GOOD LUCK AND BEST WISHES IN YOUR QUEST.

How marvelous to have folks printing items for you to scale! I think the choices you've made are completely valid. I do have a suggestion to try: use a sponge, cut to the proper shape, to "stamp" the paint on your seat cushions to make them easier to paint, and more consistent. That should also make painting so many miniatures go a lot faster. So proud of what youve gotten done so far. Adding the chairs (and tables!) adds so much to the set dressing (so do those computer terminals!). Always impressed to see ehat youve been up to!

An idea occurred: perhaps, to save time, the black cushions on the tiny Burke chairs could be done with black stickers rather than paint? There are various places online that let you design your own stickers--shape, color, everything. You could at least do the seats and everything but the edge-spine of the backs this way, and then just have to paint the spines. Just an idea.

I know computer cores are a long established thing in trek, from back in the era of mainframes it makes sense. But I rather like the idea of distributed processing and heavy networking of basically every piece of tech on the ship. Sure, there are going to be discrete processing and data storing locations for specific systems and data that needs to remain secure. But a building sized core, doubled or tripled for a given ship just seems silly unless there's a specific reason for it to exist. Like a ship serves as a strategic countermeasure platform and needs dedicated centralized processing of data from all relevant systems.

I was actually a proponent of the emergency sucking of water into tanks, but what you say makes sense. With artificial gravity, down is always going to be down. Also, this is the late 22nd century where matter can be manipulated easily. In an extreme emergency, the water can always be divided into its basic hydrogen and oxygen molecules and blown out into space. Or stored for later reuse.

One way to make painting the chairs (etc) easier is to add handles. I've got some that are basically crocodile clips on top of skewers. The clips might be a bit bitey for the 3D prints, but maybe blue tack or a something more mechanical will hold them steady enough. Then as you paint each one, you stab the handle through some scrap card or insulation and leave it to dry.

In regards to people complaining and criticizing: it never ceases to amaze me how little imagination even Star Trek fans show. Especially in our much more higher-tech age of today than the 1960s. 1) Yes, the giant computer core can almost certainly be done away with. It's safe to assume it would be much smaller and/or distributed throughout the ship, the same way the human brain has redundancies and distributed connections. I'm not sure I'd have used the resultant space for a giant "central park" like this, but this is your design, not mine. I respect that. And it IS a damn good idea. 2) I get why people think water would slosh around, because we're used to seeing the crew get tossed around by explosions etc. But come on. These people (in TOS' time) have power over matter and energy. They'd easily have ways of securing fluids and atmosphere. Force fields, walls/ceilings that morph into existence... whatever. 3) Which brings us to another point, not directly made in your video... but it strikes me, in seeing the 3D-printed chairs AND shuttlecraft... if we can do that now for these little toys... what the hell might THEY be able to accomplish in their time? For instance, the arguments about where shuttlecraft would be stored in the ship, and how they only have room for so many. (Which is not something, as I say, that comes up in this video, but has been talked about by many). Ummm... again, these are people with power over matter and energy. Is it not possible that they can replicate/3D print whole shuttlecraft, given time? Maybe the only limitation they have is how much raw material they can carry around with them in storage. (One assumes they'd have to start with SOME kind of raw matter). Maybe each ship only has a couple of shuttlecraft that are pre-made, but with the capacity to make more in short order. Maybe in losing the first Galileo, for instance, it was easy enough for them to "print" another... maybe it might take a little extra time as it's a complex vessel with an engine system of some kind. But not the big deal WE think it is. We know it was possible for them to manufacture more hand phasers when needed ("Day of the Dove") but that it took a little time as a phaser, is, of course, much more complicated than, say, a cheeseburger or a chair. But anyway, bottom line is, we don't give enough credit to this replication technology of Star Trek's (even if later shows made the canon error of suggesting that there were no replicators per se in TOS' time. Okay, maybe it wasn't the same "replicator" technology, which may be even more handwavy than we imagine. Maybe in TOS' time, it was just a highly advanced 3D printing from raw matter -- which does match some established elements from TOS---how did those food synthesizers work, for instance? If that wasn't the same as a "replicator" from TNG's time, then what was it? I think just a slightly more primitive form of "replication.") We, as fans and creators, need to open up our minds a bit more to what the people of Star Trek's various eras are capable of. Yes, keep the science grounded as much as possible. But guard against being narrow-minded and limited as well.

Franz Joseph decided that the Star Trek Technical manual would be "technically and scientifically correct". Franz himself has stated that his intention in drawing the plans was to elucidate the ship's design rather than to accurately depict exactly what viewers saw on their television screens. As a result, there are multiple minor discrepancies between Franz's plans and the filming miniatures that were used in the show, all of which are intentional, and made in the interest of establishing greater continuity. This approach was chosen due to the fact that Star Trek contains elements that were never seen on-screen, and the fact that even on-screen information is often contradictory.

Thank you, and that is a good suggestion. I sprayed them grey to stay in line with the tables we saw on the show, but it could also be good without the spray as they would make cool smoked glass transparent tables!

At 1:100 scale its already impresive, 1:25 is going to be mind boggling.

the idea of changing areas of the ship doesn't mean those replaced areas go away, and you also have to keep enough room for crew cabins! I found that to be a good argument for keeping changes to a minimum... unless the crew never sleeps lol!!!!!!

Well in some ways it does mean the replaced areas go away, like all the computers the size of a living room being updated and reduced to the size of table, this frees up massive amounts of space on the ship. Same with the massive fabricators which would be reduced in size and more efficient. There will be plenty of room for all the crew cabins.

My only concerns were how these sections fit together and how will it support the weight. I can see it being displayed in a 'expanded view' with each and every floor exposed to show your hard work.

This is an incredible project! I do have one question though. Maybe you've addressed this in a previous video, but if so, I either don't remember, or I didn't see it. I presume the final goal is to build the entire ship, so that you will have one gigantic Enterprise model with a full interior. If that's the case, how will you view the interior? I mean, once you put one deck on top of another, you can no longer see the lower deck.

Even with large size of Central Park, there are many spaces where the main computer could be. There's no need to be only in one single place. As you said, security reason, if one server is down, there are many others to supply data processing.

i do like what you've done on this deck. unfortunately i think you forgot something . the reason for sonic showers is water conservation. the pool, fountains, and saunas would be considered a waste of a very limited resource. all that being said i still like it.
@mrtrek2117
@mrtrek2117 19 дней назад
Actually the reason for the sonic shower is to make it all sound futuristic. The pools and various other water features on the ship would all be part of the water resources so that even though crew have been swimming in the pool, the water would be constantly recycled and filtered to fresh drinking water. There would be a contstant unnoticable movement of water in and out of the pool system. Saunas are dry, they don't use water, or if they do it's tiny amounts on the hot coals.
