@Airock the Great Conan's suspicion of magic is compatible with the emperors hatred of chaos. Yet it's a part of him, magic and chaos are interconnected so I don't take that part of the argument. It could just be that Conan, before he knew of his supernatural powers already had a healthy distrust of magic. But upon discovering his supernatural nature thought i'll either suppress it or put it to good use in helping suppress it. Your point about aging i kind of agree with though as in the novels Conan reaches his 60's while the emperor looks no older than his early to mid 40's. Unless he's using some kind of a glamour or his new found powers upon discovering them after his journey to the west at the end of Conan restore him to what was his prime age but forever. Obviously none of this is canon but it's fun to speculate on what could be. 40k in it's very nature can lend itself to this. There's a lot of blanks that invites people to fill them in.

Odds are that he discovered his true purpose after his final journey to the west, deciding afterwards that he was destined to unite mankind and save them from the destructive forces of chaos. His age could be a highlander type reversal: he’s mortal till he dies for the first time, whereupon he returns to life and is reborn at the peak of his physical might.

I do prefer it being just some random human that makes the emperor truly realize what Horus has become because it’s just better narratively and it makes more sense than it being a terminator or a custodes because he only saw them as tools but humanity were his people and he cares very deeply for them
