Best build I've seen because it was very intuitive... 1991 notchback Base: - Mustang ('01) engine 3.8L - T-bird Supercharger - Ranger 4.0L crank (now 4.2L stroker) - Windstar intake manifold Extras: - Aftercooler (washer fluid injection) +75hp - NOS (200 shot) Iirc it broke into the 10s for less than $5k total build cost invluding the car (in ~2004)
2.0 is a closed deck vs 2.3 so its better suited to handle more boost/bigger turbo. Most swaps will use the 2.3 head w/ the 2.0 block for better head flow and stronger bottom end.
The bottom ends for both blocks ar the same strength. This issue of 2.3 is the casting of the block its self is not a strong from it open deck design. The most popular thing is to stroke and or bore and stroke the 2L block to 2.3L-2.5L take the 2.3L head upgrade the springs put on ford performance came or use Esslinger stage 2 cams! Or if you have the money just call up mountune or MAPerformance and they will have complete longblocks for you. At the power best suited for what you want!
I've also seen people use the Duratec 2.5L and put a 2.3 ecoboost head on it. the 2.5 is bigger and also closed deck, and the ecoboost inline engines share the same bolt patterns from head to bellhousing as the duratec, same as the coyote is still technically a modular ford v8 and shares bolt patterns with the 4.6s and 5.4s
The ecoboost 2.0 price point was the deciding factor in buying my ST. Imo, it’s the best power per dollar engine out there. Ecoboost 2.0 foxbody is cool af!
Eco boost is good, but the EA888.3 from the MK7 GTI/R has some crazy potential on a stock motor I feel like it’s slept on because it’s got the VW badge on it
@@Quenn21I don’t know much about the 2.0t gti. Is it as reliable as the Focus st? There were times where I like my focus St but wished it had a nicer interior. However I did see that most people state that the St has great steering and handling. Meanwhile the gti is more composed and mature(less character).
I had a 2014 ST3 FBO Stratified Pops/Crackles Tune, dyno @ 253whp/315wtq prior to intercooler install so like 260-265whp/325wtq post install, very fun car fasho I miss the 6spd💯 But the cylinder head cracked and the turbo went, so I traded it for a 2k16 Mk7 GTI Autobahn DSG stock 216whp/273wtq, I’m JB4 stage 1 now. 4” intake/single exit exhaust/res delete, it would blow the doors off of the Focus now, it handles and feels much better around corners. The bucket seats in the ST are better though tbh. EA888.3 motor is potent af and more expensive than the Ecoboost. Overall both motors would be sick for rwd swaps 💯🔥
I’m really glad to see there are still genuine car guys out there not caring what other people think, willing to work and wrench and fabricate to make their toy exactly what they want! Purists would probably diss this car but purists suck :) this is such a sick ass build through and through. Just saw the thumbnail and I’ve never clicked on a video faster, and it didn’t disappoint! The mismatched paint and the meaty wheel tire setup with those wide fenders are absolutely perfect, it’s art honestly. Please keep doing your thing Dalton :)
It's starting to become one of the best swaps for S-chassis, E36, BRZ, and a lot of other platforms. JEM Sport is really making it super easy to put the 2.0 and 2.3 Ecoboosts into a lot of chassis.
The 1.6 ecoboost is actually a lot more reliable than both of them Unfortunately not to many aftermarket parts for the engine components Big turbo 1.6 with supports mods is good for around 400hp
Thanks for the quick shoutout! We hold the World Record for the Quickest & Fastest Mustang EcoBoost! We made over 1,000whp last year and this year we switched to a Compound Turbo setup to go #7s at the 1/4 mile. #EngineeredMotorsportSolutions
getting this engine is almost as good a deal as me getting my 4.6 4v for 500$. threw another 6-700 at it and resealed it top to bottom, got long tubes and a tune and it RIPS
@@sategllib2191 def not, i mean you got to think about it like this. this little 4 cyl makes about what my 4v makes but is a whole 2.6L smaller, and probably a couple hundred pounds lighter. maybe that’s just the way i think though lol
@sigmaprojects it had tons of boost lag. But with today's tech in that car back then it would have been awesome. Before it's time. Just like the '90 Celica Turbo All-Trac my friend had then, that was a blast, but pre Fast and Furious and Furious so no one knew what it was yet. I saw the like 9k redline and knew it would be a bitchin. We blew the motor literally the first day. Whoops. His dad rebuilt it within a week.
@@adamfrbs9259 sometimes turbo lag is fun. Like if you're not out to race, that delay and then the shove is fun. Much like a 2JZ with a big turbo or even just a fat intercooler.
Man I saw this really cool engine swap build. The build was a hatchback STI so the 2009 gen but the owner dropped the ej for a 2jz then dropped the 2j for a Toyota century v12 and then twin turboed the thing and also the owner is using a BMW DCT. The crazy things people do to have fun! the owner never said how much power the v12tt set up made. The car is also going to sema apparently
Just sold my tuned 14 SHO for a maverick, honestly quite impressed with the power. It may be 150hp less than the Taurus, but it scoots. Really tempted to tune it too haha.
What an interesting idea. There are so many of those engines around. Why not use one of them?! Very freaking cool. I been looking at an early 80s Fairmont I could get pretty cheap. Was looking at it for an LS swap but gosh darn it, I’m halfway thru the video and I’m thinking this is what I need to do. This is amazing
I currently drive a 2014 Ford Escape EcoBoost for my daily. I have put 150k miles on it over the past 10 years and it has been surprisingly reliable (I'm neurotic about maintenance). Aside from my '99 Camry that was bulletproof, I didn't know what to expect with a Ford since everyone around me always blasted them for "being cheap and expect them to brake down".
We own a 2017 Ford explorer with a duratec. It's been more reliable than any of our Toyotas and Hondas from the 90s and early 2000s. The Ford reliability stereotype isn't really accurate these days from my experience.
they can be alright if they are maintained. most of the ones that come to my shop have not been taken care of, common failures I see are bad turbos, front lower control arm bushings go bad faster than a lot of others, and valve cover leaks.
@@redcatxb125 So many people don't take care of their cars. Meanwhile, our 2017 explorer with 32k miles on it has had like a dozen oil changes and just had a coolant flush. Did it really need it? No, but I obsess over loving my car and taking care of it.
Been watching Daltons swap build videos for a minute. Glad to see you got it done and a good ride along video up. Now i need to finish up my FD Rx7 Ecoboost swap !!
The people that mock on them are me… hehe… I have an f150 first gen eco that’s been nothing but problems after about 90k miles… but of course it was my “baby” truck when new, then it was my neglected bastard for a few years, and now it’s my neglected work truck lol. The main issue I have with my first gen 3.5 ecoboost is the direct injection, never put a catch can on it… and as the miles got higher I guess turbo blow by has gotten worse. Combine that with a poor stock factory intercooler design and I can’t take take my truck on a road trip without blowing out spark plugs from oil vapor build up in the intercooler getting injected into my motor. It’s been an issue I’ve just been dealing with for literally 100k miles lol.
@@cjsawinski The 6 cyl ecoboosts were always way more problematic than the 4 cyls. The 1.6, 2.0, and 2.3 have been pretty solid throughout their lifecycles, aside from the focus RS head gasket issue.
Naah, I think it's a compliment. The SR doesn't need to do, be or prove anything. It's proven itself and it's reputation speaks for itself. I may be a little biased but, whatever.
been on the fence about doing this swap vs a K for my foxbody. not a ton of write ups for either. really wanting to keep mine 4 cylinder, and similarly want to be able to build a car that I can do anything with. The ecoboost is super tempting!
I JUST saw a post about this car on Facebook the other day so it’s super cool to see you did a video on it! It seems like it’d be a pretty fun, badass car to drive!
This, even though it's rough, is the coolest looking fox body coupe I've seen. I know this vid is not about that, I'm just sayin' lol.... and for the video, this is cool, but nothing sounds better than OG tuned 5.0 with Flowmasters. Even if it's slower, I'm taking the 5.0.
I loved my 2013 Escape with the 2.0. Tuned, exhaust, and intake it was mid 5 seconds 0-60. Broke so many necks when it would chirp 2nd gear, too many people slept on it.
Cool build! I always love to see EcoBoost swaps in older Mustangs, and it sounds like the 4 cylinder versions are a lot more cost effective than the 6. Usually the sound kills it for me with the EcoBoost 4 cylinders, but this sounds pretty darn good!
That lima engine is a beast of an engine. Used in lots of circle track mini stocks. Not a tractor engine.. It's old old design but man they can rip when done right. I used to think the same
My fam bought a 2013 it had around 60k miles in like 2016 when they got it and it now has 170k and still going strong! For them being fwd they are pretty smooth and pretty quick that turbo definitely makes it fun
I had a 14 escape all-wheel drive that I was able to fit a lot of focus ST. Bolt-ons to and it was a blast. This thing goes the rear-wheel drive and the Fox platform just screams awesome! cheap fun!
Having had an Ecoboost Fusion in the past and rented a few Ecoboost Mustang Convertible while owning a 2019 GT Premium/Cali Special, I was very impressed by the 2.3l Ecoboost they shoved into the 2024 Mustang's. Sounds amazing in parking garages stock.
My friend and I built a track car out of my 1972 celica parts car. We put the 2.3 ecoboost into it. We were the first guys to swap a 2.3 ecoboost into something. But having each having our own growing family’s and buying/building houses it’s taken a while to get the car going. So we are probably the last ones to get it running 🤦♂️. The car is highly modified. It’s getting tuned this week.
Immaculate! Definitely feeling the SVO vibes... Was wondering how long until these started to show up under the hood of some well preserved Fox Body builds. Only thing cooler would be a Barra, but that would completely go against the well roundedness of it's easy to source parts bin, and costs.
I got board with My 1999 Mustang GT Convertible so I took the heads off port and polished the heads and upper plenum completely using just a dremel and it took a few weeks of work and now my stock 4.6 2 valve has come alive it just sounds so clean and the power is instant 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds is not fast by modern terms but for a otherwise stock Mustang is actually a ton of fun.
id love to see more budget out of the box swaps like this. i was thinking about swapping a nissan truck engine into an altima similar to this situation. so i love to see this!
Hey man, that was really cool. This guy made his own motor mounts WTFLOL it’s hilarious how much both you dudes know more than me but that was fun either way.😂
Lighter more balanced to boot. Very respectable. When these came out, many had wide body.and testarossa, coke bottle body kits on 315/50 ZR tires with purple under glow with neon tubes including neon plate frames. Yes that was a thing including the 25,000 volt neon transformers.
Not many 😂 Percentage wise and I don't know your neighborhood, but they definitely are remembered in many ppls minds in any of that stuff you just named. 😂😂😂
As someone who also owned a Focus ST for a while, most of the problems stemmed from the drivetrain and not really the motor itself. The trans was terrible, torque steer sucked, and axles snap when you do get traction and make any power. After seeing this I’m definitely tempted to do a similar swap in something.
