On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will be comparing the performance of the 45 Colt to the 44 Special and the 44 Magnum on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points (winner takes all), for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 10 yards. Thanks for watching!
*These tests are meant for entertainment and educational purposes only. Do not try any of these tests at home! Always verify your firearm is rated for and can safely fire any ammunition that you intend to use.

In 1982 I was nearly murdered and was shot twice with a 44 special. Nasty Flesh wound in the leg and a paralyzing wound in the neck. It went in through my shirt collar and almost exited under my shoulder blade. It has a heck of a knockdown.. It's a miracle. I'm still alive. God's not done with me

I wound up having to order adjustable rings to get the crosshair where I need it, but I haven't had the time to get it properly loc-tited+adjusted+sighted in, so right now I take it out sometimes and aim it using sorcery; turns out if you have a rail instead of a rear sight, you just center the front sight on the rail and then dip it down slightly past where you can see it... then you can still peel milk cartons like bananas within 50 feet, or leave neat circular holes in old engine blocks, hahaha.

In my opinion the 44 special was under-developed by commercial ammunition suppliers. I ran an ammo business that supplied commercial grade and cowboy ammo all across the country. I developed and then offered a "max load" 44 spl. that I used in IHMSA matches, rather than using 44 mag. Starline brass being more malleable was used exclusively and using slow burning powder was essential, yielding velocities of 1150 fps (240gr.) 300 fps behind that of standard 44 mag loads, with less recoil in all bullet weights.

Young people today think that the 38 Special is a joke. Yet the overwhelming majority of people shot by police throughout the 20th century were killed by the 38 Special. I just had to come back to this cause I've got some 124 grn lead round nose reloads for my 9mm, I should find something plastic and rounded to try them on to see if they bounce too. The main reason lead round nose worked in .45s was the mass it had but they still bounce off stuff. Once I had an old surplus tinpot helmet (I know I'm stupid for this) that me and my brothers tested, we shot it with 9mm once .40sw once and .45acp each fmj (even using a true colt my brother has our great grandfather's combat commander badass piece of history) but nothing went through they all three bounced off, then we shot it with a .20ga with birdshot once and it might crumple a skull in the helmet but didn't go through either it just slung it. Then I'm pretty sure it got slapped with a .44 an ak and more that it didn't stop. But the three main carry pistol rounds for most Americans stopped on an old Vietnam Era helmet. Dang sorry for the book. 😅 I guess I should add we were only like 10 feet away or maybe less for all shots.

If you use a lighter bullet, (200 or 180gr.) it will, and be more likely to expend all it's energy where it will the most good. A light for caliber .45 bullet will do the same.

Those 45 LC handloads from that short Blackhawk gives a whole new meaning to #catchcleanandcook, reducing it to a single step.😮 The sand test is physics defined. Momentum trumps KE in that scenario. Those slow bullets pushed the sand out of the way, whereas the magnum "pounded sand" and the sand pounded back. If you decide to do Helium again, always remenber to take several normal air breaths between hits.

An interesting test I think would be appropriate for this channel would be testing pistols versus rifles. As in a .357 magnum revolver against a .357 magnum lever action rifle. With how stark the differences in velocity are I think it would make for an interesting video. That's if it hasn't already been done of course, I haven't exactly examined Banana Ballistic's back catalog much.

The 44 Mag is the king of the test but that super hot loaded 45 Colt did surprisingly well as a super hot loaded 44Special would as well. (The 44 mag has about double the ft lbs of energy and 500fps more speed than the other 2 according to his chart at the end.)

F.B.I., stats used to list the .357 Magnum w/the MOST 1-Shot KILL’s of ANY other caliber. Strange, as it was more than either .44Spl or .44Mag.? It’s weird!

That's only because most people don't own or shoot a 44 Magnum being that it's so large, heavy, and powerful. The 357 Magnum has more than enough power to tackle the job.

I remember Paul Harrel doing a demo of 44 special vs. 44 magnum with similar results. The special is slow enough that it paradoxically penetrates further sometimes. I stopped loading my revolver with 44 special for home defense after that. I always love more demos and data

I used to think .44 mag was overkill for nearly any defense against humans situation, & .44 spcl was the way to go. Paul Harrell's vid really opened my eyes. One of the .44 mag ammos devastated the meat target and didn't over penetrate.

Well, geez, this vid just seems all over the place. Why don't you just use the FBI Gelatin Protocol, and get consistent data comparing the calibers and there projectile weight along with velocity? It would be lots more Scientific and valid. I had to stop at 5:30 in and just bail, sorry.

Hello Greetings from the UK.....Great Video! back in the 90's before they took away all our pistols in Britain, I had a 45 long colt Ruger Blackhawk which I bought very cheap off an older guy, had masses of fun with it, very accurate with lead semi wadcutter hand loads....then I got a copy of the Hornady reloading book and discovered their 250 grain hollow point and 2400 powder and the massive muzzle flashes! great gun and cartridge. A great timebacj then, we are all stuck with pistol calibre rifles and 10/22 Rugers etc now...... no more pistols not quite the same fun! beware people...... Trust me every time I visit the USA I'm off to a range somewhere.... Cheers...Trev

To think your Government took all those firearms Americans sent to Britain in the late 1930s when Germany was feeling it's oats to dump them in the ocean is a crime. I will never send anything to anyone ever. If they don't have the stones to be Armed, then deal with the consequences. I am still pissed at Jimmy Carter forgiving the debt due from foreign countries from 1898 to 1975. It wasn't his money the ignorant prick. Next time, if they aren't prepared then learn to speak Russian or Chinese or whatever verminous group you let into your Nation then learn some other way of making it through. I wouldn't send a can opener. Look up what got the American Revolution started. In 1763....

Yes, the Brits and the Aussie's gave up their gun ownership rights some years ago. Only a very few nations remaining where gun ownership is still legal. The libtards in the USA would love to confiscate our firearms and leave us defenseless.

The 3 rounds were designed for different reasons. There is an excellent 4 Volume set some with an extra book on more data, hence 5 volumes, that goes into such minutiae called "The Machine Gun" by Col George M Chinn USMC. It starts with Slings and Spears and finishes with the Vulcan. It should be owned by any gun enthusiasts.

I have a .357, .44 magnum and the .45 colt. I do not waste my time with cowboy loads. The .44 magnum for off the shelf ammo is pretty much on top followed by the .357 magnum, standard pressure .45 colt is a bit more powerful than a .45 acp. Like your gun, my .45 colt can also fire the +p ammo and that is a game changer. The Buffalo Bore Deer grenade is a 260 grain powerhouse that pretty much beats any .44 magnum I ever fired, out of my Henry big boy it will go through a deer broadside at 250 yards and you'll feel it in your shoulder, out of a pistol...it's not pleasant at all. The real downside to these .45 colt +p is that they are quite expensive.
@craigthescott5074

You can load 45 acp to 1100 feet per second but you need heavy spring and buffer or it will break the 1911.

I'm curious why you didn't use full power .45 Colt loads for anything but the gel test? Also, any chance we can get the bullet type, grain and velocity of each round at the beginning of the video? Was awesome to finally see someone show what a .45 Colt is capable of. I wish more channels did that instead of using the low power stuff as their example every time.

My problem with the .45 LC is it’s a black powder cartridge. Most of the commercial load are going to be made to mimic those ballistics so they are safe to shoot in more of those old guns. If it’s high power you want, that one’s probably not it. It’s fine for self-defense though.
