This is a quote or variation of a quote I get all of the time. "The .44 Magnum is the worst choice for self defense!", or "The .44 Magnum always over-penetrates and is impossible to place follow-up shots!".
I am sharing my opinion, my experience and other practical data on this subject. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

When I said at 10:39 in reference to over-penetration "they're quoting that and saying well that's follow up shots, you can't get follow up shots because of that" what I was trying to refer to was how hard cast and or soft point hunting rounds are typically loaded hotter, and also have heavier bullets which does increase recoil and muzzle rise.

@@charleswynn9920 factory .44 special tends to be loaded fairly "light" due to the old guns on the market. Obviously in a 629 you can use higher-pressure rounds. Many .44 special +P rounds are energetically very similar to .45 Colt and .45 ACP, both of which have good records in self-defense use. I usually have some .44 special +P self-defense rounds on hand for my 629 and I wouldn't hesitate to count upon them in a self-defense situation. Even a relatively hot .44 special is quite manageable in a 629.

i have a set of 1858 remingtons made by ubirty that a colt gunsmith went over them and they shoot perfect then i mix a little modern powder with the black and it gives it a lot more power plus i have extra cylinders to trade out and a few converters to 45 long colt . i even have used them for hunting deer because i can use them in bow season were i live. so far everyone that has shot them all say they are perfect everyone has fell in love with them . i can hit a target every time at 100 yards they do have the 8 1/4 inch barrel. with mix powder they feal like a 44 mag when u shoot them and when u use very soft shots it leaves a big hole. the best part is that it cost next to nothing to shoot them as cap and ball when i mold the bullets and make black powder caps i just buy them but could make them if needed have all the tools to do it and have 1000's of caps to use for it

This discussion reminded me of days gone by. The local sheriff's department allowed deputies to carry what they wanted as long as they qualified with it (38 Special minimum). One day they brought a patient to the local hospital for evaluation. The prisoner found an opening and took off running. One deputy pulled his 44 mag and fired a round in the air. Now picture the area. Big open flat parking lot surrounded by big open flat grassland. The hospital discharge area was a covered entry with a cement roof. Upon firing, the prisoner immediately sprawled belly down in mid running step. The deputy said "Oh, S#!&&. I hit him." Upon examination, the only injuries found on the prisoner were areas of road rash. When asked why he fell down so quickly, he answered "when I heard that cannon go off behind me, it scared me so much I couldn't run anymore."

@Kirk yes, cops have observed that .357 sig, .357 mag, and .44 mag had higher stoppages from Psychological factors alone. Many attested to the fact the large fireballs produced just caused criminals to buckle and cave and drop to the ground in fear. .40 also has a good reputation with stoppages, just not as much as .357 sig due to this reason. It's why I wish .357 sig took off more. I still carry a .40 since I can find ammo for it.

That's the essence of your channel: load variety, and a variety of results. For the reasons stated (within the context of self defense against mankind), I tend to lean toward bigger diameter projectiles, heavier weighted projectiles, without demanding so much of critical velocities. 45acp for example. Bigger diameter, more mass, higher momentum. The parachute effect is already present without expansion. The mass almost guarantees barriers like bone, leather, thick muscle, denim won't slow the projectile appreciably. Since anything below 2,200 fps rifle velocities has to rely on tissue destruction for effect, the bigger the projectile the better so long as the user can control it.

With the proper loads, especially those closer to the .44 Special, the big gun is more than enough for personal protection. Wildcatters such as Elmer Keith were advocates for standardized magnum cartridges primarily for hunting at extended ranges with a handgun. It was evident that a powered up .429 would be more than adequate for self-defense or LEO use. The issue of manufacturers (including Remington) revving the new round to @1500 fps with an @240 gr. projectile impressed Keith from the hunting aspect of the round; he did agree with Bill Jordan that it was too much for most LEOs to handle on the job. Nearly a decade later the .41 Magnum came on the market to fill a perceived gap between the .44 and the .357 Magnum. Even so, the issues of over penetration and the large frame guns required for the .41 still drags on the 'Mid' magnum's popularity. For a more complete story behind the development of the .44 Remington Magnum, look up Keith's masterpiece of a book SIXGUNS.

If there were a 6-shot Ruger GP-100 or S&W L-Frame .41 Magnum with a 4-5" barrel, I'd be on it in a heartbeat. The problem I have with the .41 is that in any major offering, you don't get an extra round going down from .44 Mag and you don't even get a smaller frame size like with .357 Mag... all you get is supposedly lower recoil. Well, yes, but since .41 is mostly a handloader's cartridge at this point, why not just hand load the .44 down to .41 mag levels and also keep the ability to readily find factory ammo?

Good video. I’m a big fan of both calibers, abs own several s of each. I’m glad you pointed out the power of the loading of the 44. To your point of why a lot of people don’t point out shooting 44 special in a magnum is because, what I’ve seen in the special is sometimes more expensive than the magnum or on par if you can find it. Unlike the 357 where 38 special is cheaper. When times are sane! 44 special is definitely a reloader’s round.

In my opinion .357 magnum is the most versatile firearm available. You can load it with anything from tiny "snake shot" up to stuff that will stop a mountain lion or a black bear and everything in between. If I could have only one handgun, it would be a medium-frame .357 magnum with a 3" or 4" barrel. The high pressure of the .357 magnum round does create a serious ringing in the ears when fired indoors, though. A good .38 spl +P should serve well for home defense with good shot placement.

I carry my 5" S&W 629 IWB in a Simply Rugged holster all the time. Carries and conceals great. I don't carry it for any practical reason, just because I like it. I also carry a medium magnum load in it (240 grain around 1100 fps) and my limiting factor in quick, center-mass follow-ups at 7 yards isn't the recoil, it's how fast I can work the double-action trigger. I think I feel the same way about .44 Magnum as you do about the .38 Special. It's my favorite cartridge by far. You can load it with .44 Russian or Special, but I don't bother. Instead I download my Magnum cases with faster powders like Trail Boss or Winchester 231 to get light loads. You can go as light as 185 grain round nose bullets at 850 fps for taking small game with little meat damage. For full-throttle, you can push a 240 grain bullet up to 1500 fps or a 300 grain bullet around 1200 fps - and even heavier bullets faster if you're using a heavy-duty Ruger or Freedom Arms 83. I carry it loaded to its full potential as my backup hunting gun in the woods, very mild for longer target shooting sessions, and moderate for defensive carry. In that excellent holster, I can conceal it even under a t-shirt. The only reasons I carry anything else are: a) because sometimes I just don't feel like hanging 3 lbs on my belt and b) my little .40 cal Walther PPS is my second favorite handgun.

How is the recoil with .44 special? I am looking for S&W629 5 inches ? Thanks
@cristianespinal9917
@cristianespinal9917 3 года назад
@@charleswynn9920 so I've only shot 1 box of factory .44 Specials and they were some garbage Magtech Cowboy Action loads. The recoil with those was basically nothing. Without intentional exaggeration, I remember it barely being a step above shooting hot .22LR from my Ruger SP101. My lightest handloads have been 240 grain bullets around a book velocity of 750-800 fps. That's along the lines of a normal .44 Spl. I would let anyone shoot it who was ready to graduate from .22 LR and I could shoot them all day. The only problem with .44 Special is that if you don't reload, it costs just as much as .44 Magnum and I've found that stores are less likely to have it in stock than Magnum. I think that's why Gun Sam mentioned that he doesn't know why people overlook it. I think the answer to that is because it's not especially common, and unlike .38 Spl which is almost always cheaper than similar quality .357, .44 Spl is just as expensive as its big brother.

Super Redhawk Alaskan, 5½ Redhawk,, 7½ for regular Redhawks, Super Redhawks and Super Blackhawks. ideal is 9½ for Super Redhawk and 10" for the Super Blackhawk. Magnum Research BFR basically are Rugers on steroids and the latter is plenty strong. If you want smooth triggers, refinement and willing to be content with factory loads and Clint Eastwood purists, Smith and Wesson is for you. If you are willing to live with thickness, clunkier action but can be smoothened but get strength to handle loads that will blow up most other handguns save single-shot pistols, then Ruger is what you want. If you want double-action and swing-out cylinders and that kind of power, Ruger is the only way to go If you want both of what S&W and Ruger's best to offer but willing to live with Single-Action only and get rifle calibers, and custom-made quality but still factory support, Magnum Research is the way to go. Good points as to the .44 Russian. It's predecessor, the .44 American generally had an external lubricated projectile (as still is common with the .22 Long Rifle RF) and depended upon expansion ( known way back as upsettage ) to fully seal gases into the rifling grooves. The Russian was designed with lubricating grooves, seated into the casing and to tighter chamber to barrel tolerances making for a more powerful round with better accuracy.

I feel like a light bullet going fast is the best option for both guns. I want something that will rapidly expand and transfer as much energy as possible to the target before exiting. I think heavy bullets still have certain advantages, like if there is a barrier between you and your adversary, like say, a windshield or a door. If I am generating high kinetic energy, I feel I am wasting some of it if i'm punching clean through the target with a lot of energy still left in that bullet.

Everyone who shot the 40 said it hit the carcass way much harder making it shudder more violently and it did way more damage inside the carcass too than what the 9mm did. This was in the late 80's or early 90's according to the book by Marshall and Sanow 'Street Results' and 'Stopping'. These are full of tests by other agencies than the FBI and include many self defense stories in every caliber. Young men should be capable of carrying the 44 Mag with training as it is a man stopper. We all need to have these 'street results' updated, esp. by the FBI's 9mm. I watched Paul Harrel's vid on the difference tween the .357 Mag and the 44 Mag out of 16 inch lever action carbines. It clearly shows the better power of the 44 Mag. Too many are scared of the 44 Mag when they all should consider it for daily use. If shot placement was the only fact that counts, then all would be using the Kel-Tec PMR 30, 22lr with a 30 round Mag as it is the easiest to shoot.

My main point has always been, that if you can get a smaller .44 Mag and load it with warm .44 Special ammo, you have power close to .357 Magnum but also better options to go up if you need it. The .357 Magnum is a good choice, and probably more practical if you want to shoot a lot of rounds, but .44 Mag revolvers have a greater option of power levels.

.44 Magnum is definitely a capable caliber, but for personal defense, it's not my first choice, for a few reasons. 1: The noise. It's even louder than a .357 Magnum, and my hearing is questionable enough already. I don't want to lose what I have of it. 2: The size. If I'm hiking, then sure, I'll happily take one, and I will feel safer for it. But it's just too bulky for the day-to-day. I'm a little on the short side, and while I could stand to lose some weight, I'm not exactly fat. 5'6 with a 34-inch waist. N-frame revolvers are hard for me to fit, let alone conceal. So, K or J frames are my preference. Long and short of it: .44 Magnum will not just do the job, it will do the job so thoroughly that you'll be left speechless. But it's more gun than I need or want on my hip. I'd probably be able to carry the model 69 easily enough, but if I'm going for personal defense, I'd probably pick the .44 Special instead. It'd give me the staggering power of a .357 with a little less noise and a lot less recoil, but no more staying power than a J-frame .38, and less concealability. So, it doesn't fit my preferences.

Lots of good information in this video. For me it’s all about what round I can best complete follow up shots or transition shots for multiple attackers. I’m a big guy but I’m older and my arthritis makes it more difficult to put rounds where I want them with a magnum. So with that I like the 9mm 124gr to 135gr rounds for my carry ammo. I have a S&W 686+ and a S&W 29-2 both of which are more than capable of a one stop shot, but when time comes in to play my transition shots are always not good. I’ve never really improved in that area with magnums. I used to joke about how you don’t need a double tap with a magnum, but the truth is you might need to transition and if that shot it not placed well you’ll probably need a follow up shot, and your capacity is quite limited with a 6 shot. Getting old sucks, but fortunately there are easily dozens of choices these days. I want to look into the Ruger .327 magnum but now is not the time. But it’s your fault for my curiosity in the .327 magnum. It’s less gun to carry than my Glock 19 and it’s a 6 round snubbie. That is very attractive for me. Time will tell. I look forward to your next video. Stay safe and stay ready.

The 327 allows you to shoot 5 different cartridges. The 32 S&W which is the smallest and least powerful, the 32acp, the 32 S&W long, the 32 H& R magnum and the 327 Federal Magnum. Energy varies from about 56 foot pounds for the 32 S&W to over 500 for the 327. Ruger has the LCR and LCRx in a 6 shot snub, the SP101 in both 3 inch and 4 inch guns also six shots in a j frame size gun. They also have the GP100 in both 4 inch and 6 inch barrels in an L frame size gun sporting a 7 round cylinder. For single action fans Ruger makes the single seven, a seven shot single action revolver in several barrel lengths and grip styles. The only problem with this caliber is currently finding ammo for it.

@@DanTheWolfman This is the link: www.chuckhawks.com/handgun_power_chart.htm , what makes it interesting is it is not a one data set from one source. Now, the actual one shot stop statistics are 100% legit numbers from actual shootings, but there happens to be other sources of information added to each cartridge row from other sources. Like most have a gel penetration number and a goats at Strasbourg number included to go along with the actual real word stopping power numbers. What makes that interesting is this allows one to cross reference data to make a guess of what the real world stopping power might be. Take for instance this line: ".38Spec. (Load Glaser Blue +P) ( Bullet 80gr.Frag.) (MV 1667) (ME 494) (penetration 10% gel 7") ( AIT goats at Strasbourg 4.72 sec.) (One shot stop 84%est.) (barrel length 4" S&W"). With this load, the Glaser Blue, there is no actual stopping power number from real world encounters, but with the ability to incapacitate a goat, it's energy number etc, one can estimate it would do well, and they estimated 84% one shot stop.

Statistics on one shot stoppage probably didn’t include the size of the person, wether or not they were hyped up on something, or other factors. What doesn’t lie is the math of energy produced. If a person gets shot with a 44 magnum vs a 357, the FACT is he is going to be more physically effected! There is no way around the math.

What are you thoughts on the Underwood extreme hunter 160 grain 44 mag loads for self defense? They are a full power load over 1800 feet per second I think. But I would imagine they wouldn't have to much penetration given the light weight fluted design. I shot a few at paper a while ago also and the recoil impulse is very easy to control, and surprisingly comfortable to shoot as well.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 года назад
First off, I do not trust Underwood's claims for that velocity out of a normal handgun. I tried some of their .357 Magnum loads in my 4" 686, first was the Xtreme Penetrator 140 gr rated at 1,550 FPS, I got only 1,315 FPS. Then their 180 gr Hard cast rated at 1,400 FPS, and I got 1,221 FPS. Compared that last one to Buffalo Bore, they both have a 180 gr hard cast .357 Mag rated at 1,400 FPS, Underwood's gave me 1,221 FPS as where Buffalo Bore's gave me 1,387 FPS. So, my educated guess is that this "1,800 FPS" load, would be like 1,400 FPS if you're lucky out of a normal handgun length barrel. That's my guess why the recoil felt manageable, as if they really were 1,800 FPS it would be painful. As far as an Xtreme Hunter fluted design being good for self defense, I really have no idea. Personally I do not trust them, as people will say the flutes cause hydrostatic shock, but then in the same breath people say hydrostatic shock does not happen below 2,200 FPS. At least with an expanded hollow point, you know what you are working with. Hydrostatic movement will not ultimately cut things like arteries, but expanded hollow points will. Not saying it won't work, just saying I think it's mostly hype.
@876mpr
@876mpr 3 года назад
I never understood the whole “over penetration” argument. A longer wound channel can only do more damage. You definitely need to match the load to the purpose. Of course you don’t want to use a 320 grain cast flat nose at 1200 fps for personal defense unless you’re out hunting. A 200 grain Speer Gold Dot at 1000-1100 fps is subsonic and just about perfect for self defense. To me the sectional density of the 180 is a little lacking.

So we tested what each one of use were carrying at the time. I all ready knew the 180 gr 44 expanded quickly and to a very large size. You make a point I find myself sometimes making with others. It isn't all about caliber. Ammo choice is huge. That's why I study hours and hours of gel tests. I want to choose the most effective (i.e., devastating) and the most safe (i.e., doesn't over-penetrate) ammo for personal defense. I keep two different types of 44 Magnum in my 7.5-inch Super Blackhawk. (1) Three rounds of Underwood XTP 180 grain hollow point. It's so hot and so light that it basically just explodes when it meets gel, dumping all its energy within 12 inches of gel. That's a massive energy dump. It should knock anyone back and off their feet and create a big hole in the person. And (2) three rounds of Barnes Vor-Tx XPB 225 grain copper hollow point, which gets 14- to 16-inches of penetration in gel with excellent performance and damage.

I'm wondering in a home defense situation if one is better off with a 4-6 44 mag firing perhaps moderate to heavy 44 special as opposed to 357 mag out of a 2-4 inch due to the blast potential to the home defender with lasting hearing damage and disorientation.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 года назад
.44 Magnum and .357 Magnum have about the same db level of 164, a 9mm is 160. I believe that .44 Special was something like 153 or 154, much quieter than most. I doubt disorientation would be an issue as far as hearing, maybe with flash if it's not a defensive load, as most defensive loads are backed off on power and use flash suppressed powder. I cannot comment on long term hearing damage. I mean, if your ear drums are not blow they are not blown and vice versa. At arms length pretty much no firearm will blow the ear drum, but it can if inches from the ear. If the eardrums are not blown there a potential for a small amount of hearing loss, but it's not something I worry about. Alive and tinnitus vs dead because you didn't shoot is easy to decide in the moment the best choice.

I have pondered that movie quote for decades. I mean, he said something like "light specials", but he didn't specifically say .44 Special. One might say, well because the other cops asked what he carries in that "44", and he said light specials, that this automatically means .44 Special. However, when the rookie cop shot his revolver, the recoil and sound was NOT that of .44 Special. One might say Harry lied to the other cops to make them surprised when he shot it, or maybe light specials means a special .44 Magnum load, as my Buffalo Bore light magnum, is a special load, and it does have lower recoil. Harry's statement of more control than a .357 Magnum with wadcutters does though, indicate .44 Special. I know this is a lot of thought about a fictional movie quote, but...I have had that movie quoted to me, and that very scene quoted to me, like 50 times on this channel. So naturally, I put thought into it and have responded my thoughts about it a few times.

They don't print near as much as a semi auto either due to their shape. At the end of the day the decision to carry anything at all is better than not carrying at all.

I dont see a problem personally with .44 mag for self defense...from 2 legged critters or 4 legged critters... however letting loose full power. 44 loads.. is brutal on the ears ... and at night it's very blinding in my experience... for me personally it's not a fit but for those who carry it.. carry on my friends..

What do you think of the performance of .44 special? Its strong and should be less likely to overpenetrate
@GunSam

Like any other cartridge, bullet design matters more than anything. Some .44 Special will over penetrate, but light hollow points should not.

For some reason I never heard anyone mention Greg Ellifritz .357 Magnum remarkably low failure rate of 9% untill now. It's on par with Rifles! But everyone almost ignores this statistic, a tremendous upside from .357 Also with .44 Magnum's higher "One shot stops" but lower "Actual incapacitations" to the head and torso indicates that limb shots with .44 are far more incapacitating compared to .357's limb shots. (My theory)

Yeah. I have always assumed that lets say a shoulder shot would be similar to the actual Dirty Harry move at the end, where the creep literally drops his gun from an arm shot. I don't typically like to go into movie "ballistics" as it's usually way off, but I would think that would be close to reality. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kYxwTuCtQMU.html

The one good thing about ammo shortage is you have a exuse to carry the most powerful gun you want. It's what was available to you That being said. This would be a good video to show the jury in a 44 magnum self defense case for the prosecution lawyer saying only a murderer would go armed with the "most powerful production revolver in the world"
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 года назад
If all a prosecutor has to go on is caliber, than he don't have much. But if that was a true concern, than I might carry Gold Dot .44 Special, as Gold Dot is what cops carry to do nothing, but stop a threat, nothing more.

People love to say that *ALL* handgun calibers are poor stoppers. But they're referring to traditional self defense rounds like .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, etc. They skip hunting calibers like .44 Magnum, .454 Casull, and .500 S&W Magnum, even though those are also handgun rounds. I''ve read a story about a South African man confronted by a black man with a knife. He drew a .454 Casull revolver from his gun bag and shot the assailant in the chest. The man died on the spot and the wound channel was gigantic.

Call me crazy, but I prefer.44 Special. While it may be a weaker round, I feel more confident shooting it due to a lower recoil and my brain wouldn’t be scrambled from the concussion.

If I wake up tomorrow and find I've grown 7 inches in height and gained about 60lbs I will only then consider carrying a .44 Magnum. All discussions of "effectiveness" or "lethality" is meaningless to me. I only have two requirements for a chosen carry cartridge here in the suburbs where I live: can I conceal this? and can I rapidly draw this in an instant? All else is basically moot. My body size and weight and the clothes I wear daily are more profound than anything else. For me that pretty much means .38 snub in the summer and maybe occasionally a 3" .357 in the winter if I am wearing a heavy coat. .......fun fact--Clint Eastwood who is 6'4" admitted that when filming Dirty Harry he never actually carried the 6" Model 29 during all non-action scenes. He only had it holstered for the specific scenes which depict him drawing and firing it. He stated that the reason was it was "way too large and heavy".
@craigdamage
@craigdamage Год назад
@Gengar you kinda missed the point of my comment. I'm talking about MY CHOICE for "carrying". I choose to carry what I can easily carry concealed and what I can draw and fire in no more than one second flat. I'm sure you are larger than me but I would challenge you to time yourself drawing and firing a .44 Magnum. If you can draw, fire and hit a target at 7 yards then you are doing fine.

I agree with your assessment. Choose the load for your intended threat. You don't need a howitzer to swat a fly, but you better not have a fly swatter for a Grizz.

I don't have a 44mag but I do have a Smith 686 357 in a 4 in barrel length. The 357 is mainly for a woods gun and backup to my Mossberg 590A1 12ga pump. My usual carry is either a Glock 27 40cal or my little Sig P938 9mm for deep concealment. I view my carry guns as a completely different purpose or mission. I also have a Smith 460XVR 8 3/8 inch barrel that was for hog hunting but that was a waste...I've been hog hunting a total of twice before I developed arthritis in my hands and specifically on my trigger finger to boot....what horrible luck. The trigger pull is about 15 pounds in double action. I thought my 357 was loud, that 460 will absolutely make you deaf if no ear protection. I shoot Federal A-frame JHP 300 grain1750fps for 2040 ft lbs. I have also used HSM Bear loads 325 gr hard cast 1824fps and 2402 ft lbs. It is a handful to be sure. Fire shoots out of the compensator about 3 ft both sides. Impressive at night.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 года назад
I have fired that .460 revolver, and with the right ammo it's not bad. To me the .454 Casull was bad for recoil, the lighter 200 gr Leverevolution .460 Mag had less recoil. But when we shot .45 Colt in it, it was basically like shooting that 686 with .38 Special for recoil. My friend owns the gun and I just offered him a grand to buy it lol. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C3b0NNdqZxk.html&t

I didn't realize 44 magnum could be loaded so light. I have a 357 with ammo that is 750 ish foot pounds. The difference in recoil between the 357 and the 44 is pretty noticeable so this is suprising.

I personally cast a 245gr HP out of a 30:1 (30 lbs lead to 1 lb tin) powdercoat it and load it to a velocity of 1250ish fps. My test shows an average expanded dia of over .75", massive wound channels in wet pack and comparable penetration to a 147gr hst out of a 9mm in the same test media. That's ~850 ft lbs of energy being dumped in the same distance as about 320ft lbs..... Yeah I'd say a .44 mag is an extremely viable self defense option if loaded appropriately.

Wasn't around back then. Assume it's around medium good jhp 9mm..better than .38...not as good a best 9mm 124 plus p hsts and certainly not .357 mag best etc...less tissue crush but Louder bang (psychological) w best .327 like gold dots.

@GunSam 3 года назад
No way to know, so basically what you have to do is make educated guesses based on expanded diameter, energy, ballistic test penetration, velocity and all of that. My guess is that it would be somewhere around 9mm+P numbers. Probably 85% +/- depending on barrel length.

loads for 44 mag that come in around 800 pounds of energy are my go to for most things... shot em all my life. follow up shots are difficult because the target is or has fallen. I do shoot hard cast bullets. Never shot a person nor want but shot a lot of critters. to me there is no such thing as overpentration If it goes clear through? or almost clear through? it has the right amount of penetration. I am also a huge fan of the .357 mag round.
