454 Vortec Fuel Injectors Problems GMT 400 L29 (Part 1)

In this video I will be showing you the Injector issues that I have with my 98 Chevy C3500HD 7.4 truck. This truck has the 454 L29 engine and it has been giving me injectors problems. I scan the truck with a scanner and its running rich. The reason why this truck is running rich, is because there is a problem with one of the injectors. One of the injectors is stuck open. So in this video i bypass the fuel pump relay with a jumper wire to see what was going on with this fuel injector problem. Bypassing the fuel pump relay, it will help you narrow down the reason why your truck is misfiring.

Also a really good use of that jumper wire trick on the fuel pump relay socket is to tell if your fuel pump is even working or not! Back in 2018 my truck suddenly just shut-off on me without warning going down the freeway, I coasted over to the shoulder and stopped then tried to re-start it.... nothing, it would just crank and crank without firing! Wasn't sure what the heck had happened, immediately wondered if I'd gotten bad gas when I fueled up a few miles back.... friend of the family happened to see my truck and pulled over to help, had the idea to check the fuel pump to see if it was running and did this jumper wire trick and NADA not a sound from the fuel tank and taking the cap off the end of the fuel rail and pushing the core down with a small screw driver there was no fuel pressure at all. Fuel pump had completely stopped working! Had truck towed back to my house where I proceeded to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump myself it was a PITA! Arghhh! LOL!

Got 99k2500, suburban, 7.4 , just replaced injectors, and regulator, I wonder if there are steps I still need to do

Great video. Question for you. When I jumped the relay sockets, I hear a buzzing noise coming from the engine area, not the tank. It was continuous until I removed the jumper. Any suggestions on what else would make a noise when jumping the two ports?

After replacing your injectors, did you jump the two prong to see the difference in sound? I would like to know whether or not it was a substantial change in sound so that I can confirm my injectors are bad 🤯

I already have my intake off can I still do that test with the intake off?

Good video! I have same engine in 2000 GMC Dually truck, 287K miles and counting. It's been a great engine! However, lately it's been running a little rich and hesitating from idle even shuddering a little when coasting off-throttle (like going down a hill at 55mph, feels like the engine almost wants to die). Did the usual stuff, added fuel system cleaner replaced the fuel filter cleaned the MAF sensor and K&N Air Filter... to absolutely no avail or effect! So, I'm guessing I must have either a faulty fuel injector (they are factory original!) and/or a leaking fuel pressure regulator. Any thoughts how to tell which it is, or should I just go ahead and replace all the injectors AND the fuel pressure regulator at same time (since it's a bit of work getting to them)?

The best way is to physically look at them and also testing it. If it is factory injectors, sometimes is better to replace them.

@@Karfix Well I'm a week into this now almost... stuck at unable to disconnect the primary fuel line, can't see it can barely feel it and cannot begin to get a 5/8" line wrench onto it! Arghhhhh! I've considered pulling the distributor out completely to get more space, but having a hard time finding anything in all my tool boxes to get onto the retaining bolt that holds it in place (and I used to be in heavy commercial trucking, I have A LOT of tools here!). Any thoughts? I'm stuck!

Well after 3 days trying to get BOTH fuel lines disconnected I finally got the primary and final line broke-loose just before sunset tonight... I thought to myself, "This is it I'm going to get that darn fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator out finally!" But wait, not so fast.... I pried up on all the fuel injectors with a flat screwdriver and all 8 came up and the front 4 even came all the way out of the holes, but SOMETHING is still holding the fuel pressure regulator end of this thing in place! WTF???? I already took out the only retaining bolt I could find on it's bracket, why won't the thing move any at all? There's something ELSE I cannot see holding it firmly locked to the engine and I can't feel where it is... and I sure hope I haven't ruined the fuel rail metal fuel lines (cause it's at an angle now, something has bent back there at least a little)! I give up for tonight the sun has set (it's under my carport, but the shadows of lights at night make working on it far more difficult and I'm beat). You wouldn't think I had all this apart to change the primary intake manifold gaskets just about 8 years ago but I did and it only took me 3 days back then.... what gives? Grrrrrrr! :-\

I think there is a 2nd retaining bolt that holds the primary and return fuel lines and fuel pressure regulator down back there, under the edge of the distributor cap (looking at pics of the bracket after the fuel rail is removed online). So now i still will need to remove the distributor tomorrow I guess so I can get that bolt out and remove the fuel rail finally maybe! This is really starting to frustrate me now, and if the fuel lines have kinked then I'm screwed anyhow at this point. :-(
