Simple question Jim but google doesnt seem to understand my question. So between the 25" deck and 28" deck snappers, is the width of the outside of the wheels the same? And what is that width? I have 29" max ramp and space to transport it. Does that make sense?

I don’t know about a 25 inch I don’t have one to measure the 28 inch machine is about 27 inches from outside to outside of the front tires. I hope this helps. Jim

That's a jewel of a motor! When you removed the valve cover, clean as a whistle! Wonderful tutorial video Jim!

Sorry..newbie here. I have 14hp single vanguard that is back firing through the exhaust.?? I’ve been told to set the valves to .005 on both, h it ran but died (that’s what started my issues..it would crank and run for a minute or two and then just die. I be new told to run .005 on the exhaust, and .007 or .008 on the intake..? Still backfires through the exhaust…I cannot seem to find any factual document that says this is the way it’s supposed to be…what are they supposed to be? Also I’ve been told could be bad gas or dirty carb..? Any help anyone can share will be greatly appreciated..

@@sharpshooterofky most of the mechanics I watch set both valves at .005 But if you still have any issues, I guess I will try cleaning the carburetor and see if that helps it sounds like it’s a timing issue. Have you taken the nut off of the top of the flywheel and check to see if the key is OK or if it’s slightly twisted, it does not take much. I need small engines to mess up the timing. It does not have to be completely shared. If it’s just a little bit on the crank it will cause issues. If nothing else pull the flywheel and put a brand new key in it.

@@sharpshooterofky if your engine is backfiring a check of the key in the flywheel and make sure your flywheel hasn’t turned slightly. It doesn’t have to turn off the key off, but just slightly enough to throw off your timing. It doesn’t take much to be safe. I think I will just pull the flywheel and put in a brand new key.

My 11 HP Briggs on my Snapper Comet 30" model 307XS all of a sudden slowed down, then, shut off. ???? What could it be? The crappy gasoline that we've been getting lately? Maybe. I assumed the worst. I had a spare carburetor. So, I drained the fuel tank, purged the fuel line, changed the inline filter, and put on the spare carburetor. Started it up, and, low and behold, it did the same thing. I am not an engine mechanic, but, I figure that if it is getting fuel, air, and spark, something more should have happened. So, I pulled the valve cover (after removing the muffler for access and the spark plug) and the problem was obvious. The rocker arm on the intake valve had cracked in half. Me, being the cheapskate that I am, tried silver soldering the steel rocker arm. This did not work. Took it back off and tried welding it. That did not turn out so well either. However, I did learn a good lesson from this dog bite. If your engine slows to a crawl and then stops, and, it's got fuel, air, and spark, then check the rocker arms! I watched the video and will check my valve tolerance when I install the new arm. I don't know where to get the valve tolerance data from, but, by the time anyone reads this, I will have that data for sure. Jim, your videos are the most helpful and useful content that is on RU-vid. Thank you so much for your patience and attention to detail for all of us non-mechanics out there who are just trying to keep our mowers running! Keep up the good work and may God bless you and yours.

@@winfordnettles3292 well to answer your question on valve Clarence I have a chart here, but I would have to know what engine you have, there is a wide range of sizes depending on well, for example L head, aluminum sleeve single cylinder engine intake runs from .005/.007 Exhaust runs from .007/.009 Then you have a L head cast-iron single cylinder engine, which are different Then you have an L head opposed twin cylinder engine, which are really different. Then you have an overhead valve single cylinder engine, which again are different. Then you have an overhead valve tune cylinder engine, which are different again.

@@jimjackson9381 Jim: My Briggs & Stratton OHV engine is 216902 0125 E1 . I just did not know where to look for the valve clearance information for this engine. Where did you get the valve adjustment chart? Haven't found it anywhere so far. Thanks for all the information. Your videos are priceless!

@@winfordnettles3292 I got it off the Briggs & Stratton website. It’s just called a (check chart) But it does not list your actual model series, but the number before it and the number after it is both the same intake valve is .005/.007 Exhaust valve is .007/.009 That’s, the best I can do with this chart

Jim did you lock down the intake valve? Just rerun the video you might have just done it a different way than the exhaust
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 7 месяцев назад
Yes, I’m pretty sure I lock both of them down. I can check it though. Jim.

Would adjusting valves help a engine that smoke at start up?
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 7 месяцев назад
Well without having your engine in front of me so I can run some tests on it I would have to say it sounds like your piston rings need to be replaced. If you know someone with a leak down tester, they could tell you in about 20 minutes what’s wrong with your engine? Jim

@@jimjackson9381 Thanks jim it a old snapper rider it only smoke at start up but i have to add oil everytime i use it.

@@k9under well, like I said, I would have to run some tests on the engine to find out if it’s a valve issue or piston rings. Jim
@winfordnettles3292
@winfordnettles3292 2 месяца назад
Do a compression check on the engine. I'll bet the rings are worn out and that is why you have to add oil each time you run it and it smokes due to the blow by oil getting into the exhaust. When the exhaust heats up, the oil turns to smoke until it burns off inside the muffler and exhaust.
