Houston is 4th largest city in the country in the epicenter of HS football. If you come to Houston you are expected to win. Fritz is a proven winner and would win big in Houston.
Houston is mostly a commuter school. It's not a destination for the Blue Chip players. There's a reason why all the five-star and high four star players go to the bigger, better programs. U of H is not it.
I have a couple of things I would like to share about this • Randy McIlvoy with Channel 2 has been well respected in covering sports in Houston and the surrounding areas for many years. His journalistic acumen is top-notch. If he covers or reports is usually pretty solid and accurate. • Willie and Randy are very close acquaintances because not only did Willie Fritz's daughter Lainie Fritz worked with Randy as part of the KPRC Channel 2 sports team for like 6 years, but all three have strong ties to Sam Houston State University • By the way Willie Fritz's daughter Lainie Fritz is really easy on the eyes. She made a career change from working at KPRC 2 Sports to being a school teacher in 2020. • I for one don't think Willie will be a good fit at UH because I don't think the UH officials and alumni will give him enough time to build the program and I'm not sure he's ready to take on a more stressful and demanding head coach position at his age. • I think they should look at offensive-minded coaches like Kliff Kingsbury, Will Stein, Kendal Briles, or Jake Spavital. I'm kinda lukewarm on Jeff Traylor even though I think we will be able to recruit solid talent in Texas but I'm not sure if his offensive philosophy will work against teams in the Big 12.
If Fritz is selected… just how long would he last at Houston with all the media and BXII coaches and teams geared up to whoop up on the Coogs?.. 5 years because UofH threw that at DH?.. not good
I would like to see him stay one more season at Memphis. The fan base is pretty divided over him. Some love him, some want him to go. With a 12 team playoff coming up and a fourth year starting quarterback returning hopefully, I would rather go with the guy who won 9 or 10 games and see if he can get over the hump than hope we strike it rich with a great hire. If he can't do it with a fourth year starting quarterback, then it's time for him to go perhaps. Besides if he goes, there's a good chance he will take the quarterback with him. I think he will stay if he feels appreciated and got a contract extension. Indiana is not exactly a dream job. As a Memphis fan I hope he stays, but I wouldn't be shattered if he left like I was when Norvell left, even though we knew he was going somewhere.
In short order, UTSA could equal or exceed Houston as a more desireable program as well. Traylor & Fritz are definitely 1.a and 1.b prospects for the Houston Job, however.
@alfredmatthews1746 There's a good argument that they already have done so, but for conference affiliations. Now, if UTSA loses Traylor, then it becomes a question mark again, but if UTSA hired a good replacement, they can continue what Traylor has established.
I feel like fritz works better for Duke than Houston, because historically he has not been a guy to get in the feisty recruiting battles with the big boys. Tulane is very similar to Duke but you don’t have the expectations of needing to win your conference. I also don’t think the Houston fanbase will like the way he goes about things. For traylor..just don’t see why he would turn down Texas tech to go to Houston.
@@CollegeUnderdogsas a Houston Alumnus, I would prefer Traylor over Fritz for multiple reasons. I actually would prefer other coaches than those two for multiple reasons. I don’t think the Tech job is open and Houston is a better choice anyway than Texas Tech in terms of winning conference championships in football and other sports. Fritz has said he like Tulane to be his last gig. So I think he would prefer to stay at Tulane or take a job at Duke or something similar and not Houston. Texas Tech thinks too much of itself and talked way too much last year and then this year and Joey ran into what other good to superb coaches at Texas Tech have ran into. I prefer Kinne or Chadwell or Hartline or several other quality coaches to choose from.
The guy who asked Coach Fritz the question is Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle. He’s the UH Athletic beat writer for the Chronicle. He’s known Willie for many many years. Joseph has been in the game for 30 years
HC Willie Fritz has a big moral dilemma. IF Tulane wins the AAC Championship, HC Fritz could lead them to the 1ST and only G5 back to back NY6 Championships. This would be immortal for both Tulane and HC Fritz. Could Houston wait until January 2ND? Before anyone says no way to Houston waiting, they have players who went 4-8, 2-6 this season. By waiting 3 weeks, HC Fritz could still have enough time to get Houston to 6-6, 4-4 in Year 1. If HC Fritz leaves early he will still only get to 6-6, 4-4 in Year 1. This goes to whether HC Fritz has the confidence to tell Houston it will take him 3-4 years to win a B12 Championship. Houston needs to hear reality. If HC Fritz does not set expectations now, he will have knee high media BS in every loss in Year 1. If Houston wants a walk on water HC, HC Fritz should tell them there is no such a hire. Look at HC Rhule at Nebraska. He won big at Temple. Won big at Baylor. Struck out in the NFL. At Nebraska in Year 1, he got to 5-7 with 6 losses 1 score or less. It Year 2 ends up 6-6, 7-5, 8-4 with a Bowl victory, fans should be happy. If by Year 4 or 5, Nebraska can upset Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, or USC, then HC Rhule will be putting Nebraska close to a B1G Championship game and also CFP consideration. Compared to Temple and Baylor, Nebraska is the best Year 1 HC Rhule has ever Coached. Fan angst in Nebraska is misplaced.
SMU & Tulane are my 2 favorite schools/teams in the AAC, but I went to SMU, so I ride with SMU. I hope Tulane, Rice, Tulsa, USF, along with UConn, maybe UTSA, all follow SMU to the ACC, or else the Big12 picks them up.
2 simple solutions to keep coaches from leaving a program before the end of the CFP playoffs... 1. Move the early signing period to the week after the playoffs championship game. 2. Structure the contract with large buyouts, and complete forfeiture of total salary of the contract. A spin on GOR for conferences.
I would like to see a group of five step up and offer the same amount of money that the power five does and see if it's about the money or not. You can't fault a coach for leaving for double the salary, but many people don't realize that Memphis offered Calipari more money than Kentucky to stay and he left anyway. But there's something satisfying knowing that you offered more and they had to admit it wasn't about the money even if it sucks. Unfortunately, unless you hire a legacy or former player, like Penny Hardaway, The group of five coaches will almost always leave eventually.
@@GR-bn3xj I was actually surprised to see him leave Memphis back then, no "P5" bias in those days, but yet again he did bail on UMass for Memphis at a time when North East & Big Metropolitan Areas basketball was king.
Normally I wouldn't take too much stock but there is an angle where it could be true because Fritz daughter used to be the weekend sports anchor at the same station. He could be getting the info straight from the Fritz family.@@CollegeUnderdogs
Totally agree. Temple fans would pay his airfare and moving expenses!!! If Stan Drayton took the whole Temple Staff, Temple fans would throw in a truckload of Victory Beer Lager for Houston’s 1ST tailgate!!!
@@patpozzuto4809hell no to Stan! Hell no!!! As a Houston Alumnus I would revoke my tiny support that I give twice a year for tax purposes. As a Houston supporter period quadruple times a billion hell no!!!!
There is some data to support the argument that, near term, Tulane is the potentially better program (if elevated to ACC or Big12). Tulane media viewership numbers were better than Houston's in 2022. If Tulane matches money, you gotta think seriously about staying at Tulane.
UH is not a great fit for any coaches, they hired "P5" Dana Holgorsen from WV to transition to "P5" BIG XII, they are clueless about coaching, I'd pass.
