I get this question all the time, it seems like everyone wants to know how to stuff a 5.9 Cummins 12v in a half ton pickup. There are a few questions you need to ask yourself before attempting this swap. #FilthyVlog

Here in Brazil Cummins 4BTA is used in 3/4 trucks with a nice mileage and power. The last F250 made in Brazil had a 3.9 Cummins 16v electronic version. Great engine! Develops 203 hp/405 lb ft and great fuel economy! It can do 25 mpg and reach 100 mph easily.

I swapped a 12v p-pump cummins w/ 47rh into a 99 2wd 1500 ram that originally came with the anemic 3.9v6. Had to swap out the front springs, everything bolted in, even used the stock v6 driveshaft. Been driving daily for past 2+ years with over 50k kms and occasionally haul 5-10k lbs with it, the only problem I've had were eating the small 1/2 ton wheel bearings (going with timken or skf bearings fixed that) average fuel economy is 27mpg (much easier on fuel than the v6) in fuel savings alone it paid for itself in a few months (not to mention the power). Truck is making 285hp/ 600+ft-lbs, the stock 9 1/4" rear handles it well. Frame is a little lighter on the 1/2 ton but in a 2wd application it is never really stressed. For those wondering cost of swap I bought a rusted out donor truck for $1200, swapped over everything I needed then sold all remaining parts, all in all I was out around $200 and 2 days of time doing the swap. I'll never own a gas truck again.

In a half ton or less application, if you have to have that Cummins emblem, there is of course the R2.8 but also the QSB 3.3 and QSB 4.5 that are not to be forgotten about.

Gm 6.2/6.5 has always been a nice engine to me. Very easy to swap, easy to work on, weakness are well known and easy to bulletproof, dirt cheap and plentiful, available in full mechanical form with minimal electronics, only slight weight penalty, able to increase performance.

I just bought my first truck and it’s a diesel with the 6.5 it doesn’t have oil pressure and is going through a lot of coolant. If it needs to be replaced I’m not sure if it’ll be better to do a Cummins swap or do another 6.5?

@snek9353
@snek9353 6 лет назад
If it's a big block truck then probably fine. I'm not a GM expert but plenty of K2500s were lighter duty. They didn't have full float axles, some were even 6 lug, and IIRC there's two sizes of front axle used in K2500s. If it's a 454 then it's probably a true HD, but I can't be sure. With those you still have the torsion bar issues though that he speaks of, the 5.9 is heavy. As well as like in all modern pickups you have front unit bearing issues.
@enriquetorres6069
@enriquetorres6069 6 лет назад
Well tbh idk wt kind of front end it has 😣 . It is a light duty truck .vin j i beleive .it deos have 8 lugs and 4×4 .(if it makes a difference) but yea torsion bars would be an issue. Ive already had front wheel bearing problems as well and with the heaver engine u probably rite! Ive used it to haul trailers and the fam to travel it just keeps going.

My friends usually do this swap on half ton dodge rams. We use gassers second gens single cab shortbeds 2wd and everything bolts right in, major thing is getting the drive shaft shortened and it’s quick trucks. We also just cut the frame on single cab short beds 3/4 tons with Cummins already in then which is easier since we’re only cutting 14 inches out of the frame and cut it as a Z and we haven’t had any issues. Fun little trucks, I hope you get to see one of them and make a video about them.

I built my 1978 Bronco in 2009, it has 6" suspension lift and 3" body lift. I used a 1991 12V Cummins in it, purpose-built C6 auto by Dynamic Racing with billet converter, custom rear driveshaft from Tom Woods with 1350 joints, Forged rear 1350 yoke in a stock 9" Ford rear with stock 5 lug axles and stock 3.54 gears, stock Dana 44 front end, with an OEM trac-loc I built for it. I built a hybrid turbo and have the VE pump turned up as far as possible, so it's probably making at least 350 hp at the wheels. I have access to a certified truck scale on my property, so after I relocated the entire drivetrain back in the chassis by 4 inches, the weight bias front to rear of the Bronco is now actually better than it was with the stock V8 engine. I run 37x12.50R16.5 Military Humvee tires on it, too. The Cummins Bronco averages 22-25 mpg and if cruising on a back road at 40-50 mph, it's getting closer to 30 mpg. Truck weight is 5150 on the scale, stock it was 4600. After driving it for more than 50,000 miles over 10 years, the only issues I've had was in the early stages, I was twisting off driveshafts, due to the 6 inch suspension lift and sharp shaft angle, but lowering the transfer case 4" in the chassis got rid of that problem. For 10 years, I've been using it as my daily driver, offroad toy, occasional puller, rescue truck for pulling people out of deep snow and in the summer, I even drag race it on pavement, so I'm not exactly gentle with it. (As you can see from the video on my channel, it's not slow lol ) There actually is zero downside to building a truck like this.

I know this is 5 months old, anyways: Unfortunately, we here in North America don't get many imported diesels. Outside of Mercedes, VWs? Nothing really desirable comes here. Well, unless you want to start looking into Hinos, and Isuzu medium duty trucks, but they don't litter the scrap yards, and parts tend to be costly (I believe).

If you were going to put a diesel in an Audi, you would want the late 90s VW TDI 1.9 or the later common rail 2.0 VW, or maybe the BRM 1.9 PD VW. Since Audi and VW are part of the same company, the transaxle and motor would stand a better chance of fitting and working with the wiring harness.

I put my 12 valve and nv4500 into my 1981 Chevy C30. It's crazy how much vehicles have changed in the last few decades. Technically, it is rated as a 1 ton truck. But when compared to today's trucks, it looks like it is built like a half ton. I ended up using coil springs rated for the big block variant of my truck and that held the weight very nicely. I would only do one major thing different if I did the same swap again... I would definitely box the entire frame... Cummins are torque-y!

94-01 dodge ram 1500 and 2500 have the exact same frame infact the only difference is the rear leafsprings and the hanger for them and the coil springs upfront, Now assuming you have a 01 dodge ram 1500 ws with 3.9l magnum v6 and 42re transmission and you have a 12v cummins with a nv5600 transmission it will bolt in, you will need ¾ton springs in the front and you will need the crossmember from a 2500 with manual transmission to make everything a bolt up swap the only part you will need custom made is a driveshaft and everything else will work fine, I definitely recommend upgrading the brakes at that point and go ahead and use ¾ton suspension and remember before starting addressing the kdp (killer dowl pin) is a must

I spent a lot of time under my old fullsize 70's era Jimmy, and under my late 90's Dodge Cummins...I can tell you that every single component of the suspension and driveline was about twice the size from the Dodge to the Jimmy...and even with that the Dodge destroys front steering components at twice the rate of the GM product.

Gen2 Dodges are the same in terms of frames at least in my findings. I've got a 96 3/4 ton and an 01 1/2 ton. I measured multiple key places front to rear on both before deciding to use the 1/2 ton frame for my swap since it was in better shape, Not a spot of rust, wheras the 96 had some surface rust all over the frame and the cab was rotted to the core. I swapped the 5.9 cummins out of the 96 into the 01, along with the springs, axles, trans, transfer case. the 01 originally had a 5.9 v8 gas motor. total cost so far is less than 4 grand for both trucks and assorted goodies I've added, and parts I've broken along the way. Now Ford and Chevy I'd bet you're right in the differences, I've also got an 01 F150 and it sits and rides far lower and spongier than the 1/2 ton dodge did even before swapping the diesel stuff over, suspension would never support a 6bt.
@trythistv
@trythistv 6 лет назад
Adding one more thought. If I was going to swap a small engine in a half ton, I'd use a Mercedes OM617. I've got 2 cars with those engines, and they are the reason I bought trucks with 6bts. you look at the 6bt then look at the 617, they are alarmingly similar. both use mechanical inline IPs, and are very solid built little engines, they weigh around 600lbs. I'd put one in my f150 if it wasn't rusting out.

i also measured a 99 3500 frame next to my 2001 1500 frame,and they are indeed the same,no difference that could measure,maybe the earlier second gen trucks used smaller frames,but the newer stuff looks the same,

Thanks for the idea. I have my Grandpa's old 94 C1500 exteded cab short bed with the 5-7. Engine doesn't turn anymore, frame and body has Michigan cancerous rust. Have suspension parts to do a 4/6 drop when I restore it. Now, I might put a 5-9 in it and bag the suspension instead. Was planning on brake upgrade anyways (Baer 6 piston calipers). Just swap out to a 14 bolt full float with a disc brake conversion too. It'd be a daily driver and not a tow rig.

OM606 is HALF the weight of a 5.9 due to an aluminum block, and can put out as much as 500 ft lbs with the right mods (dieselmeken). The one weak link is the rods, which can be fixed. It would be a good option for a 1/2 ton vs the 6bt, if it has to be a diesel. OM617 is another option and is shorter (5cyl) , heavier than the OM606 but super reliable. Both are considerably cheaper than you can buy a used 6bt for.
@Diesel8290
@Diesel8290 5 лет назад
wacko wacko first of all the om606 has an iron block. Yes if only weighs around 210kg, actually lighter than a 2jz. But to make that 500 ft lbs you want a considerable turbo and you’ll have lag till at least 2500rpm. They also are a square engine by design and Causing low torque but the ability to rev to 7k!. There very hard to keep cool under load, and egts skyrocket,. There for cars and racing not working lol
@luiscervantes197
@luiscervantes197 5 лет назад
I think all you guys make real good points. The OM606 is a great motor and can be a good candidate but perhaps not for everyone. I have that motor on a half ton, short bed Silverado (2002). I love it! But my intent with that project was fuel economy and daily driving. I doubt I could tow much. I love the acceleration with stock 6mm plungers and EDC pump. My last very precise measure of MPGs revealed 30. It will definitely get better, I hope to achieve 35 and I'm pretty confident I will. I would definitely recomend it for a fuel-saving, daily driver on a half ton truck.
@Diesel8290
@Diesel8290 5 лет назад
Luis Cervantes with a small early enough spooling turbo and the correct coolant modifications they could probably tow up to 3 ton comfortably. But the in direct injection and short stroke don’t help for low end pulling.

I could just buy a D250 with a Cummins already in it, but they're way overpriced. If it weren't such an easy swap I'd probably just do a Mercedes OM606, still plan to do that in a C10 someday.

Never swapped it, but a Hino 3B is a great, reliable, economical 4cyl diesel. Trans is extremely beefy for whawt it outputs. 22-33MPG while moving a 2 ton landcriuser and lasting for millions of miles. It's a slow dog though.

I swapped a nv4500 into my gmt-400 heavy half. Just so at some point I could swap in a Cummins. But… the trans itself is freaking heavy. But with 373 gears and 37” tires 100 kmh is 1700 rpm and she’s wicked on fuel. So rich is 100% right. Since then I picked up a 2500 HD chassis time to start over lol

My gmt400 is torsion bar lifted but it has the upper ball joints flipped and 17” rims to clear the control arms. The benefit? You can go higher without snapping the torsion bars. 3” blocks in back and 3” body lift clears 37”s the body lift drops my gear shift lower (awesome) and when I want to change my clutch it’s suuuper easy to get at all of the bell housing bolts

I bought a square body one tn chevy from an attorney and he mentioned that he put a diesel engine in it which I did care cause I ran both anyway. I got it off the tra,er and opened the hood to find a five cylinder Deutz engine in it... Okay.... I can use one of those but started it up and like he said it was making a strange nose in the engine but there was oil sssssquirting out of the side of it. I fond some brase and hooked a pressure gage on it and of course oil problem solved but the noise was real light. I dropped the pan and rolled some mains and rods in and the thing actually lived. I put the motor on a skid and a air compressor on it for a mining shaft that just didn't have enough breathable air in it and everything was fine but I was stuck with a good quality adapter for said engine to th400 adaptor plate. I threw a small bock in the chevy and drove for a while but that Deutz killed the front end and it was quicker to sell and buy a good dadge tk with cummins and still have it out back with may other junk project to never be completed. The reason I wrote you was that guy had four mufflers on that truck and I just put a new system on it. Duet is a air cooled engine and they are NOT quiet anyway but it ran as a air compressor for over ten years and nothing ever done to it said seriously

Yes, I am going to be one of the guys who will argue, only on one point, because it depends on the purpose. If the purpose is power, towing, and anything above the half ton's normal use, you are right, but there is another reason for the swap: Fuel economy. There are 2 rear axles in the half ton Dodge, the larger can handle a well built big block. So no problem there. as long as the trans is included, and the springs upgraded, a stock 12 valve cummins will be fine for normal driving, and will deliver better fuel mileage than the 3.9, the v8 models, or the 3/4 ton Cummins models, due to the reduction in parasitic drag, lower weight, and taller gears.
