5 Best Salts For Cooking...And One To Avoid - Salt Grocery Haul

I thought it was time to make a video all about salt. There are so many salt choices at the store, it is hard to know which ones to buy, how to use them, and which ones to avoid. I would stay away from using iodized table salt. That stuff is so heavily process that all of the nutritious minerals is taken away and the salt is bleached and full of fillers. Kosher salt is perfect for cooking, but I am moving away from bleached processed salt, and toward unrefined kosher salt, like the real salt from redmond. Sea salt is great to finish a dish with and sprinkle over cooked dishes. I hope this salt video answers some questions, let me me what grocery store aisle to tackle next! Mad Love, Bobby..Dessi..Art XOXO

Iodine is a critical micronutrient in the human diet-that is, something our bodies can’t synthesize that we have to rely on food to obtain-and it’s been added to salt (in the form of potassium iodide) since 1924. Originally, iodization was adopted to reduce the incidence of goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland. But research since then has found that iodine also plays a "crucial" role in brain development, especially during gestation.

I don’t understand why everyone keeps saying how good Real Salt is. I got it and it was weird. It left my food strangely gritty. I eventually decided to try to dissolve some in a glass of boiling water. I dropped a tablespoon of the Real Salt in the glass and half of it was still there in ten minutes. It was like a red clay dirt and I had black flecks that floated on top of the water. I guess that explains the gritty texture....

Great information Bobby! I bought real salt 2 weeks ago...I liked the taste of it. But after eating few bites, I feel the sand. It took 3 days for me to realize that real salt is the reason. I tested it, I dissolved a spoonful of salt with water, and saw sand is left behind. Don't want to waste it, very expensive, so using it in wet recipes by dissolving and straining it. One extra step.. I'll stick to Himalayan salt.

Ken W it’s actually in the Punjab region. The same reason they call strained yogurt Greek yogurt even though chobani is a Turkish company and Turkish and other Asian countries have been using strained yogurt just as long as the Greeks. Also the same reason they market quinoa as from the Andes even though it’s Peruvian from the times of the Incas and is the only place it’s grown. First of all, common table salt is mined from ancient sea salts from prehistoric seas. These deposits are deep underground and may contain harmful compounds like lead, arsenic and other trace minerals that should not be ingested. That is why they are "processed". The food snobs use the term "processed" as if it was a bad thing. I certainly hope my local water company "processes" my drinking water to remove harmful ingredients. Likewise I hope my local butcher "processes" my steak to remove any excess fat. Excepting Iodine, why would anyone rely on salt for beneficial mineral intake? All beneficial trace minerals available from any salt product are already supplied in a healthy balanced diet. I personally use iodized salt because adults need 150mcg of Iodine daily and unless you eat seafood(average 25mcg per serving) daily you run the risk of deficiency. As for aluminum being used in table salt, that is not true. Morton salt uses Calcium Silicate CaSiO3 as its anti caking agent because it can absorb 600 times its weight in water. Anti caking agent #554 Sodium Aluminosilicate is not used in Morton table salt. Also Kosher salt does indeed refer to salt which can be used in a kosher kitchen.

@@51farmalla wronggg. "High humidity resulted in rapid loss of iodine from salt iodized with potassium iodate, ranging from 30% to 98% of the original iodine content. Solid low-density polyethylene packaging protected the iodine to a great extent. High losses were observed from woven high-density polyethylene bags, which are often the packaging material of choice in tropical countries. Impurities that provided moisture at the salt surface had the most deleterious effect. Although clear correlations were not obtained, the presence of reducing agents, hygroscopic compounds of magnesium, and so forth seemed to have the most adverse effects on the stability of iodine... Stability of iodine in salt Elemental iodine readily sublimes and is then rapidly lost to the atmosphere through diffusion. Potassium iodide can be oxidized to elemental iodine by oxygen or other oxidizing agents, especially in the presence of catalysts, such as metal ions, and moisture."

Question: Forget pre-packaged items, if you advise to stay away from Iodized salt because they are heavily processed, how do you get the daily dose of your iodine from? I know @8:13 you mention about use of Iodine but Iodine in salt helps with Iodine deficiency or inflammation of the thyroid gland (goiter or Adam's apple). I have always stayed away from the Celtic and other himalayan pink salt just because they are not iodized.
