I teach a fitness boxing class. We try to include more advanced techniques and fundamental boxing as it makes the workout pass more quickly, reduces the risk of injury, and is then useful in self defense. It is very tough to get people to keep their center of gravity over their stance, constantly adjusting their feet, shifting their weight without ever having all of their weight entirely on one foot... your video is great because it shows people how to DEFEND without putting themselves in a position where they CAN'T ATTACK. If you are off balance, blind, can't attack, even briefly, you become a punching bag in a spar or fight. Not fun!
It took some time but I'm so happy of how much better I got in boxing. With my classes, and working your drills and tips, I even started slipping/dipping my coaches punches in sparring. About to be 3 years in my training.
Yesterday was my first sparring session with a pro. So much of this is relevant lol. Looking forward to seeing what my coach has me drill next. Def keeping these in mind for open gym drills
Happy to hear mate, keep it up. And watch this vid mate ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hvGZNDWNfqk.html - this vid will give you tips on ur next sparring match. Good luck 👊🏻
Bro, I'm an old man...54 and trained 35,40 years ago here in LA on Broadway at the old school Broadway Street gym. You make an old man want to come to London to get some training from you
The more I watch and try boxing stance defense. The more I see the defense is a mirror of the offense. Or it feels that way. Your videos are so insightful. Thanks for the quality work 💪
Thanks a lot for this video! I'm laying here in bed with massive bruises from getting smashed by a pro at my gym (don't worry, coach is talking to him about lightening up). I definitely make all of these mistakes lol
@@HuwPewPew Ive sparred with pros whove never hurt me. Its actually some of the most productive sparring I’ve had. They rly shouldnt be hurting you tho if youre not even an amateur
@@MrDrPancreas I'm glad it worked for you man, sparring with people who are above your own skill level is always the ideal way to learn, however I feel like as the skill gap gets bigger so does the risk of the amateur just getting battered and not learning anything.
Thank you Tony , your knowledge of boxing Is impressive and you talk about It with passion and dediction. Thank you so much for your work , bye from Italy
Much respect to you sir all the techniques you teach are real and applicable. Glad we have someone to pass on the torch of boxing to the coming generations.
Yay I do do these things but started focusing on slipping rolling and Philly shell so much that sparring partners started predicting me still always working on head movement n what not though. There's always something new to learn and implement!
Tony, you are the best! In my opinion your videos are second to none, they are so precise and well-thought-out! I have learnt so much from them and what is also important - it is just a real pleasure to watch them, which I do more and more often with my 11 years old son - he practices kick boxing. All the best for you mate, greetings from Poland!
Great video as always, thanks a lot to you i can improve on boxing,Tip no5 is my common mistakes although i thought i have a good head movements and defences i don't add it to my footwork, and again thanks to you i can correct my mistake🙇🏿♂️
Great video Tony. I have these mistakes, except closing my eyes, quite often. Mainly the footwork is my biggest issue, putting my hands up isn’t a usual issue but sometimes I forget it when I am getting tired or focusing too much on offense. Thanks for the advice. Also a small note about closing the eyes. As far as expecting a punch you shouldn’t close your eyes but when it comes to knowing when to close your eyes it should make you more aware as I have had punches hit my eye and it causes a slight distraction when fighting but when you maintain your focus it isn’t too much of a problem
Hey Tony, for some reason, I seem to remember you saying something about splashing your face with cold water without flinching to drill, well, not flinching.
@@Tony_Jeffries Yes, in sparring at my hometown boxing gym for 14 to 18 years old but my offense wasn't the best. But at least I learned something from my mistakes.
To not lack out on defense one thing that I keep on doing even on the heavy bag is starting things off with slips and rolls and weaves of all sorts. I keep doing them in a random order punching in between them, kind of like a counterpuncher style. I really love doing that and it catches people's eye a lot (they may think I've been doing boxe for years when in reality I just started 2 month ago after a 10 years brake)
@@Tony_Jeffries will do. Can you please try to make body punch defense techniques and foot work so that you can get more time to counter or hit the opponent. If you already made some of these things, mind if i ask what's the title i would love to watch it. Thanks.
@@Tony_Jeffries oh and also can i add up this, boxing styles (can be defense or offense) that you think are no longer good for the era of boxing these days.
Had my first sparring session Saturday there, got my nose busted pretty good blood was everywhere noticed the guy I was sparring with didn't like that I got him in the face and went kinda hard. Then asked him how long was he boxing for and he said 3 years you shouldn't be boxing if you get your ego hurt be someone that has been doing it for 2 months and then just bump up the pace. Not gonna sparr with him again. Also had a headache the rest of the day and nose is still sore.
@@Seraikyu yeah grand my nose click's a little more then I remember but it's fine sparring this morning aswell so hopefully I don't get busted again. Thanks for asking.
Hey Tonny im a girl and I always watch ur videos and im so proud of the improvements that I made u were my motivation and u helped me in street fight I just want to ask you something I easily get tired while sparring or playing I need tips and how can I improve cause I wanna fight boys thank you so much and I love you and keep going ❤️
Hey tony. Your videos have been very helpful for me while trying to get better at boxing. But I have one question, how can you break someone’s defense if they have their hand up high in a defensive kind of block?
I like to shoot with both eyes open. This does two things: I am not getting fatigued using just one eye. I can more easily see other potential threats.
Subbed you Tony, love the channel, great enthusiasm, friendly, helpful advice and a top approach to safety, with some decent banter thrown in. Wish you well with the channel buddy, all the best 👌👍
Today I spared for first time and closing eyes was my biggest problem. My successful blocks was followed by closed eyes and then BOM out of nowhere usually right to the head 😀
Sir I started boxing now and I have not coach nor club i do it by watching Mike Tyson fights and your videos how can I improve my slip and role alone without partner
Good tips. My kids take kick box classes. And I am allowed to use the facilities solo. You are my coach now. I have mma gloves and 16 oz gloves. Could you do one about pros and cons etc.
Thank you sir... For all your videos.... I am a bullied person..... I am afraid of them because I have very bad experience If I resist them... I am felling like some one is tearing my inner soul whenever they bullied me... And because of afraiding them... I did not come out from my room.. I resist To went out from my home... I feel like I am coward. But from the when I see your first video on self defencing... I feel motivated now.. . Now I too feel that I can kick their @ss and live my life freely.... I can't even express your favour on me... Thank you sir.. Thank you so much...🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@ahmedalhamadi1231I too want to join but I can't put financial burden on my parents ... But from now I am motivated now... And now I am ready to kick their @ss🙏🙏 But otherwise thanks brother...
@@jadhav4704 Oh brother stil.. try your best to be in a martial arts gym... maybe they let you for free maybe parents help you you dont' know... don't give up. and yes bully's are bad and with ugly behaviour.
Tony , can you make a video about when on offense and they are hitting you when your trying to throw your combo what to do . I get stuck in sparing a lot trying to throw a combo and and they stop my combination or my flow but attacking with their own combinations
I done some light sparring in my natural right-hander stance but was getting hit and switched to southpaw and started having success. How do you know which one you're better suited for?
I’m left handed and I sometimes switch to the orthodox (right-handed) stance to throw my opponent off. Naturally your dominant hand at the back is always the best but you can train to become southpaw as well
