Learning phrasal verbs in English is very challenging for students and advanced phrasal verbs in particular can seem impossible because they appear to be illogical.
In this video, I share useful tips as well as five C1/C2 example phrasal verbs.

Before you explanation, I would have said quite the exact opposite for "fork out" hardly spend, but for a good reason (dig\fork the soil > hard, for growing tasty vegetables> good) 😅

Fork out: force to spend money. Neg Splash out: spend money on sth special. Positive. Fork out opposite to Splash out. Gloss over opposite to dwell on. Wise up: become more aware of sth

Thanks a million! Great stuff. One request, Ben: could you please talk about the possibilities for the particles/prepositions that come after the phrasal verbs when you deal with them? For example: after fork out the prepositions 'for' and 'on are possible. After splash out, 'on'. I would naturally choose 'on' thinking of 'spend on sth' but I'm always cautious not to generalise when it comes to English. So many exceptions! 🙂

Example with the phrasal verb fork out: A few days before my graduation in marine biology in 2018, I had to fork out on a new suit for the occasion, you know, I had to cough up some cash to get decked out for the big day. Gloss over = After failing to get the desired score on the IELTS exam on my first attempt about 3 years ago, I tried to downplay the setback, but looking back, I realize that I shouldn't have glossed over the failure because I wasn't truly prepared for it. Wise up = It's time to wise up to the fact the often-recited litany of human-induced climate change has had a severely damaging effect on the delicate and fragile ecosystem.

Don’t dwell on whether you will flunk the exam or not just try to gloss over all the mistakes that you think you might make throughout the course of the exam cuz you might actually end up splashing out a great deal of money for nothing by taking the test so it’s time to wise up and realize that you can’t afford to fork out so much money on a test without passing it!

in what social class do people use fork out more than in other socioeconomic class? I ask because the translation to my language would be used by workers on the street and it would be a more nasty way of saying that you have to spend a lot of money for something..
