5 Photographers making better Street Photographs than You

London Street Photographer Nick Turpin shows us 5 photographers making candid public photographs on the fringes of Street Photography that you should know about.
Nick suggests that Street Photography still has a huge amount to give without resorting to technical gimmicks like apps, staging and manipulating pictures. Instead Street Photographers can take a lot from photographers working on the borders of Street Photography where it meets Art, Conceptual and Documentary Photography.
Nick would like to thank the photographers that gave their permission for their work to be shown:

Good points, Nick. Just came out of Stephen Shore’s talk at Photo London and his many styles of photography did massage my sleep-deprived little (street photography) brain. I think that your canpubphoto approach does indeed allow for as much variety as one needs to produce interesting work.
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
Thanks Fred, that was the only talk that interested me this week. I think canpubphoto is pretty broad, it just seeks to exclude pictorial fraud and lies.

I totally agree with the sentiment that so much street photography these days is derivative thanks to the echo chamber of social media. I see the same stuff over and over again and it's sadly getting stale. Though I'm SURE I suffer from a similar lack of originality, I do strive to go outside of the box. Thanks for the inspiring video!
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
I think the majority of Street Photographers recognise the problem but find it harder to find the solution or inspiration to make a change in their own work. Partly I think it takes courage, faith and self belief to go your own way.

Terrific video again. What is your opinion about photographers making seemingly snapshot-like images but capturing the beauty of the place and the atmosphere? William Eggleston is an obvious example but even more contemporary Josef Hoflehner (and even Street Photography gurus like Joel Meyerowitz touched this idea).

Thanks Nick, great vid, Please keep them coming. Really interested to see if you know of any photographers who do street photography in the back yard of where traditional landscape photographers operate.

@@streetphotographywithnickt1648 Oh Yes, I'd seen the Merrie Albion photographs before. Good call, exactly what I was thinking of. He caught the moment before Gordon Brown was confronted by Gillian Duffy who he was subsequently caught on mic calling "bigoted". Often think that was maybe a moment of inflection for the whole country pre-Brexit and Roberts caught the scene. Must check out his more recent stuff. Cheers

His work, A Shimmer of Possibility, is also a good example that exists near the borders of the street and documentary genre and is characterized by precisely not the big Decisive Moment but instead is about finding a meaning in the hidden ordinary moments of life.

I couldn't have said it better 🤣😂🤣 I just discovered myself an amazing attraction for photography and "only" having a body with couple of prime lenses, apart from shooting photos of my family, I found that walking the streets of my city are somehow inspiring. When I look at the actual trend in photography, taking aside sport, portraiture and all other variants, I find many choose to take part in street photography. For sure there is a lot of inspiration taken from the granddads of the craft and maybe a tendency to copy rather than finding your own style...which differentiate the good from the excellent. Just recently I discovered Saul Leiter's work. His style is SO unique, even if you wanted to copy it, it would show 😎
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
I hear you Jason, nothing wrong with copying your heros when you are in your first few years, we all did that. Thanks for watching and good luck with your street shooting.

Great video Nick. Most of these names are new to me and I really want to explore their work. My take away was how contemporary these are, and examples of good digital photography that is straight and not overly reliant on processing. I am tiring of the nostalgia and film fandom prevalent in photography. Also interesting to see Oli Kellett is from my current neck of the woods (Hastings),
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
Yes Steve, I agree, on Insta there is a lot of derivative work, people going out at night replicating Saul Leiter etc......why? Why not shoot your own ideas, now in 2019 instead of harking back to the 40's? Sure, absolutely be influenced by Leiters colour or use of light but don't copy his pics :-)

Hello and thanks for yet another great video. To answer the question ("how to get out of the fish bowl?"): maybe by watching less street photo internet content (youtube street photo content for example) and going out to shoot? As Joel Meyerowitz said it during a live conference: "to find your style, you need to go out and shoot what appeals to your own eye". That takes time, effort and some money..
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
I agree, which is why I end each video with 'Grab your camera and get out there'. However Street Photography is an intellectual process, sure we use a camera to record the final results but knowledge, experience, cultural and historical awareness etc all play a part. When I teach a workshop I always spend time 'changing minds' in the classroom before going out and putting it into practice.

Thank you for the introduction to these photographers. I need to look more into Michael Wolf's work. This fits well into my identification of a need to find my own style. Who would have thought of using a car window to frame stories like the wedding?
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
I'm glad you found the work as inspiring as I did, there are many other photographers who are also doing very interesting things with Street Photography but these are my relatively recent finds. That Karl Baden shot of the wedding is gorgeous isn't it.

@streetphotographywithnickt1648
Ha! I have to record it in little bits to stop me rambling on indefinitely. Trying to keep it short and sweet Patrick. I’ll investigate other transitions. I chose the flash because its very quick. What were you watching it on?
@patrickj8425
@patrickj8425 5 лет назад
Thanks for the reply Nick.The short segments are fine, it's just the flashing jump cuts that I found painful (literally). Watching on a 2k Dell attached to my rather ageing Mac Pro. Flashes aside, I really enjoy the videos and find them a tremendous resource. Personally I don't like the modern fashion for close up head shots, they lack context and feel more like portraits.

all guys
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
Valeria I’m never going to select photographers based on gender, only the quality of the images. Apart from Michael Wolf who I knew was a man for a long time, all the others are chosen because I saw an amazing image or series....then investigated who the photographer was and they turned out to be male.
@ValeriaVincentSancisi
@ValeriaVincentSancisi 5 лет назад
@@streetphotographywithnickt1648 Interesting observation ... when you found out they were all guys, did you notice?
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
Valeria, I did notice, the video was quite specific in its subject though, about innovation in Street Photography and about those working on the borders of the traditional definition of Street Photography. Although there are increasingly many excellent female Street Photographers, I was not aware of any that fitted this particular videos criteria. I know that white men like myself are constantly accused of bias and discrimination, and I suspect that’s what you are implying with your question but I am really only interested in great images whoever made them. Its interesting that nearly all the images submitted for my review videos are from men also. I think men are just more active in this area of photography for some reason. But I think that is slowly changing.
@gisele6961
@gisele6961 5 лет назад
@@streetphotographywithnickt1648 I would suggest men that men are not necessarily more active in this genre, but that women are less interested in submitting to contests, collectives, reviews, exhibits, etc that are predominantly managed by (and focused) on white men. It is for this reason that there has been an increase in women's groups. It gets old trying to force your way into a party where little is done to make you feel welcomed.
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
The interesting question for me is not why ‘white men’ took the initiative to start and run these things but why women never did....until recently. There are many amazing female street photographers now and it seems a shame for their work to be seen separately. A great street photograph is a great street photograph regardless of the gender or ethnicity of the photographer. I started this channel just 6 wks ago, its a bit early to start accusing me of discriminating against women.

@streetphotographywithnickt1648
@streetphotographywithnickt1648 4 года назад
I don’t understand your comment, ‘a male gaze?’ I don’t care what gender a Street Photographer is, I’m only interested in the merit of their work. Your comment is really quite insulting, you’re implying that I have discriminated against female Street Photographers in my selection rather than chosen my favourite 5 who turned out to be men. I am never going shoe horn in female photographers just to tick a box as you suggest. Its only about the images.

@joeltunnah
@joeltunnah 5 лет назад
I guess I have to disagree that these are interesting “new” approaches to street photography. With the exception of the first guy, they all use people as distant props, or even dispense with people altogether, and they’re incredibly self-conscious. Probably 80% of the most popular street photos I see on Instagram every day are in that same vein. There’s a desire by the photographer to abstract away people, or to literally distance himself from his subjects. You want to get featured on an IG street photography collective? Red or blue umbrella in the rain with some bokeh’d out city lights in the background. No humans needed really, except to hold the umbrella. It’s sad, because for me what’s interesting is people, doing people stuff, and the joy of walking and meeting people, and taking photos. It’s not about gimmicks, visual knock knock jokes (like the two examples shown in this video), or abstraction. A real person is one of the only things you can take pictures of without it being a cliche on some level, if you have empathy and curiosity.
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
Thanks for your comment Joel, I don’t think Street Photography is about a place or a subject, I think it’s an approach, and I think everyone, like you, has their own preference. I think a number of approaches have become over practiced in recent years and that’s why I present 5 photographers who are not using them. Like always its just my opinion. I don’t think Street Photography is necessarily about people.

Everyone: hold up...
@streetphotographywithnickt1648
With all respect you don’t know what happened at in-public. Blake Andrews is a terrific Street Photographer, I admired his work for over a decade, it’s unique and distinctive and individual. All the things that I am encouraging in this video. He is an innovative photographer which I applaud but in my opinion his use of computational photography took it over an important line. But that’s not why in-public ended, that was to do with the attitude of one of the other members who didn’t want to see a resolution of the discussion about the picture. There is absolutely no conflict in my position about Blakes image and my views in the video. In both I believe Street Photography to be a documentary practice. That has been my consistent position my whole career and that was already an established principle of in-public when Blake joined.
