Automatic transmissions are an incredible invention, but when compared to a manual transmission, they have many flaws. Manual transmissions use a clutch instead of a torque converter, and this leads to many benefits, and not just from a driver engagement or "fun" standpoint. From mechanical efficiency to unique driving techniques, this video will cover 5 major advantages of manual transmissions which may make you decide to avoid the slush-box on your next car purchase.

Not 100% the case. My 3.0L 6 speed auto that weighs less gets worse mileage, wears brakes more and is more of a pain to drive in my heavy traffic commute than my 4.3L 5 speed manual which weighs more and is less aerodynamic. Running a pump and changing through all those gears is highly inefficient. Part of the reason, I assume, is that a large part of my stop/go/crawl is downhill.

I got my first manual a couple years back when my old Accord died. I genuinely feel like it makes you a safer driver because you can't zone out quite as much. Having to think about shifting makes you think more about what other cars are doing, what's coming up, etc.
@akiimo389
@akiimo389 3 года назад
you have to actively think about shifting?
@Xyler94
@Xyler94 2 года назад
Moot point, zoning out typically happens on highways, which in a manual or auto, you're not shifting from the last gear as often. In the city, you're either stopping, slowing down, or watching a lot of other people driving. Whether you're in an auto or manual, you're actively looking places. And as Akiimo said, once you get in the groove, shifting a manual is basically second nature, to the point where you don't think of it... And this is coming from someone who rarely drives manual.

6) Driving on ice and snow... BTW, I've never driven (and don't intend to) an automatic, but what happens if you get brakes malfunction? Can you safely slow down and park your car if your brakes don't work? Seen that a lot in movies... I, for example, was in that situation; brakes simply died! I pressed the pedal and nothing happened. So I used engine brake and a bit of parking brake, turned the car around and safely (though slowly) drove it through entire town to get it to a mechanic... No problem there. Is it possible with an automatic?

I was perfectly satisfied with my manual until I started to drive during rush hour. Repeated starts and stops get really annoying when you have to dance on 3 pedals and wank that stick instead of just gently pushing accelerator and sometimes use brakes. Anyway there is one more reson for people who buy used cars. Automatics need good care and still don't live that long, so chances are that if you buy used car with auto it will be dead really soon. Manual just needs oil change once in decade or two and will last forever.

It's standard over here in Europe, modern 'manual' cars are barely manual, there are so many automated systems in place such hill start, anti-stall...etc that any skill required has been removed. If semi autos/autos don't take over completely, which they have in high performance vehicles, manuals will just keep turning into a driver assisted system to the point where you may as well drive a semi auto.

For me, I just love automatic. I have always driven manuals for the past 10 years since passing my test. But recently got an auto. Would never look back. I love the way you can barely tell when the gear changes. So subtle and luxurious. Living on a steep hill, I appreciate the 'park' gear so much. Handbrakes never seem strong enough. I love the way the car slowly moves on idle. I enjoy the car softly bouncing back and forth when you release the foot brake after shifting to park while on a gentle incline. I admire the engineering design of the automatic transmission. Very complex with many moving parts, but working effortlessly.
@Kevin-dt9xm

same, to a certain degree a well made automatic knows better when to shift and can shift much more quickly and smoothly than most human drivers can. i drive a cvt and its weird not having shifts but whats great is that you throttle til you get to peak rpm and then the trans just shifts continuously while keeping the engine at the best spot

@@legendoidrome8554 in all honesty, unless you have some sort of debilitating condition in your left foot, you have no excuse for not being able to drive a manual. Talking about 'confidence' is a convenient way of saying 'I'm a bad driver and so I need a computer driving me' essentially. Also you don't have better control of an automatic car. Have you not seen the many clips online of people mistaking the 'Drive' position for 'Reverse'? I agree with Mike. Unless you're driving a supercar/hypercar or have a condition in your left foot, manuals should be the way to go.
@Karreth
@Karreth 2 года назад
I think the best argument for a manual transmission is that I'm better at anticipating what gear I want than the car is, while the best argument for an automatic is stop and go traffic -- especially uphill stop and go traffic. Having moved now to an EV as my daily driver, though, that's better than both. It's as easy as an automatic, yet it's *always* ready to give me all the torque I want whenever I press the go-pedal.
@josephoberlander
@josephoberlander 10 месяцев назад
Correct. I always can get into a gap in traffic before the person in the automatic can as I have been driving in 3rd or 4th gear keeping it at 3K prm. There is no time needed to shift or spin up in heavy traffic - I simply move the car and it's done. A lot of drivers raised on automatic think the thing will explode if it's running constantly at 3K rpm, and the automatic's AI being programmed to keep revs as low as possible for fuel economy is a lot of the reason for this. They never hear it rev beyond 2K unless it's on an onramp or similar.

I normally think you have some clear reasoning on most things. On this however, while your thoughts on the dead battery may barely have merit (everyone should have a good set if jumpers), most of what you're talking about is (in my estimation) trivial at best. Clutches can need replacement multiple time throughout the life of the vehicle (especially high performance) costing at least$1,000.00 a pop while many automatic transmissions last the entire life of the the car. And my last point is as long and far back as i can remember (and I'm 64) all automatic transmission cars come with the simple instruction to use lower gears on hills whether going up or down. Just sayin!

I've always preferred a manual transmission, even when I used to commute 35 miles in LA traffic that could take me up to 3 hours. I really never thought about the traffic and I could stay in 2 gear putting along for miles without touching the brakes or clutch. And it all made it worth it when there was an opening and taking that hole shot in 2nd gear. The best part though is driving the back mountain roads and having the time of my life while rowing through the gears.

driving a manual in traffic encourages "traffic smoothing" which is the opposite of what a lot of automatic drivers do. Ever notice how people speed up to slow down behind the car in front of them? In a manual that's really annoying. A lot of manual drivers will find a nice gear and coast in it. This has the added benefit of not making traffic annoying af. That speeding up to slow down actually makes traffic much, much worse.

Not that the manual is the most effective (not to be confused with efficient) but the shear amount of involvement is far greater than the others (even the dual clutch). The only gearbox that’s more involving than the standard manual is the sequential manual with poor synchronization gears or even without them. For a joyride I personally would take a good torque converter gearbox.

I'm on my phone much less while driving a manual. But it becomes very distracting to use when you do. A manual is a good way to stay engaged on moving roadways with intersections and lights. In traffic, it sucks. On the highway, it's hardly different than an auto. On a race track, it's a handful. If you intend to downshift before a turn and botch it it becomes nerve racking to get the rev match right mid corner or you can go for a spin. But it's more rewarding.
@leexgx

also for older people they tend to crash there car less in a manual as its muscle memory (less likely to confuse the pedals) but an automatic you get some people who confuse the brake and accelerator pedal and brain says stop you they keep on pressing the pedal to stop but car not stopping so they keep on pressing it until they hit something (this unfortunately tends affect old and people with limited think for them self capacity or who only drive a car because they have to)

With an automatic, you gain more cognitive bandwidth to optimize other aspects of driving than what gear you want to take a turn with or what speed is too low to keep breaking without adding the clutch. Also, the moment of changing gears feels more smooth and comfortable. On the topic of manually starting your car though; i don't yet understand why you would press the clutch pedal again? is this to let the engine ignite and then rev up, because it seems you are using less of the kinetic-drivetrain-rotational energy to start the car. So i would only press the clutch pedal when the engine actually starts and not prior to that?! I forgot about the benefit with a manual of being able to bump-start the car. I had to do this myself once, in one of the original Minis. I was on the way somewhere, and noticed that the crappy headlights were getting even crappier as I drove along. So I stopped and reversed back into a side-road to get out of the traffic. This side road was a moderately steep hill. And it was at night, obviously, since the headlights were required. Anyway, I turned off the engine, and opened the bonnet to see if anything obvious was wrong. It was the alternator belt that had been changed a little while before, and now needed tightened up as it was slipping. I had no tools, so I got back into the car to finish my journey, I had about 10 miles to go to the destination. I turned the key to fire up the engine, and nothing. No juice at all in the battery. So I did the only thing I could do, which was to put the car in reverse, clutch in, then release the brakes and roll backwards down the hill. In the dark. I let the clutch out sharply, luckily the engine started, and I crawled the final 10 miles. No mobile phones in those days either, so a breakdown like that could mean a long walk to the nearest house.

Don't buy a manual, don't buy an auto, don't buy a dsg... Next week: Why CVT's suck and engineers ride bicycles Edit 1: CVT's don't suck, but programming sometimes does. Ideally it would be possible to accelerate at max BSFC until cruise, select an appropriately (tall) cruise gear then coast at the minimum revs for deceleration fuel cut. Such things never happen though. Edit 2: There are many situations where a bicycling is objectively superior to an automobile. I could probably cut my driving by 70% if I had the right bike and trailer. Then I'd be fitter than you as well

Been driving stick all my life, and I like shifting when it's not a chore and in a city, I always find it a chore while on some twisty hill roads I find it absolutely enjoyable. Since 95% of my driving is done either in city traffic or highway, I really want an automatic. What are Kia, Hyundai or Peugeot or Citroen like, shift quality wise?

I have driven 4 of the common "modern" transmissions types. Each has its good points. CVTs are smooth, but not meant for "rough service". Not meant to handle lots of torque. Also, the computer often got "confused" when accelerating downhill from a stop. It would remain in a lower gear ratio (to prevent runaway?). Growing up with manuals, it is second nature (to me). Becoming "one" with the car is a great experience. Automatics are good. "Modern" automatics (with a manual mode) can be very close to the "perfect blend". Electric/hybrid vehicles are interesting. In a "soulless, efficient" manner. On the highway (or flat ground above 40mph) there is almost no difference between them.
@BrickVids
@BrickVids 5 лет назад
Kind of agree with you. I think you summerize it in a wisely & elegant manner. Yes, modern automatics are for me the perfect compromize. I think their manual mode is getting better & better over the years.
@theonly5001
@theonly5001 5 лет назад
Look at big Tractors. And other farm equipment. They are all starting to use CVTs in their Vehicles. A well built CVT can handle loads of torque. And will allow you the sometimes creepingly slow speeds needed without wearing out parts too much. And you forgot double clutch transmissions. They are relatively fast shifters. (still depending on the computer to predict right which gear you want to choose next) If the computer has chosen right though, you are shifting without a momentary loss of totque an keep accelerating the whole time
@SweatyBearsGaming

It isn't like people can't adopt to CVTs it is that their maintenance and reliability is poor compared to standard automatic transmissions.

The main reason you don't bump start a car in 1st gear is because the engine braking can be so strong it could grind you to a halt! Especially if you're already struggling to push it (& it's harsher on the engine mounts etc). Oh & yes, generally manuals are more reliable (not taking into account people who can't drive, or badly made gearboxes!). And manuals are cheaper to fix if they go wrong.

Curious how much mileage people are actually getting out of their clutches. From subie forums I'm seeing a pretty large number of people replacing their clutches under 30k. I don't know anyone with an auto who's had issues in the lifetime of their car (anywhere from 7-15 years), except for a Ford Focus... but then Ford = "fix or repair daily" so that hardly counts.

IMHO the best is the combination of both called a paddle shifted automatic. Both of my cars allow me to pick what gear I am using. Recently I drove a neighbors car across town. I had to use the clutch over 20 times in a 5 mile trip. That took attention away from avoiding the rest of the mob on the road.

@awesome10k64 2 года назад
Wow only 20 times? Not really difficult. You did well but just need a bit more practice. But I don't really find it difficult even in traffic.... And no it's not normal traffic.... It's the indian traffic. I've driven manuals in Bangalore, Delhi, Nagaon, Guwahati, Bhupal and many more. In extremely heavy and dangerous traffic yet I faced no difficulty.... At all! Not bragging but just saying that it's not really difficult at all to drive a manual in traffic.

@@awesome10k64 Thanks for your comment. I started driving manual tyranny cars in 1960. I have had plenty of practice with hand shifting including only using the clutch for starting up. Some 60 years later I just as soon let the thing decide what gear it wants. That said, I drive a 2010 C-6 Vette for most of the summer. When I am in the real twisties I use GM's version of paddle shifting. Much like shifting a manual without using the clutch. Even then, for most roads in the 40 to 65 mph range the thing is in third or fourth gear for an engine speed between 2500 and 4000 rpm. This sits my driving style and I am happy with it.

Manual transmission: So here’s the clutch, shifter, and tachometer. You want to get the engine up to however many RPM and release the clutch. Don’t release it too fast or too slow, and you’ll start moving. When the tachometer shows a certain number of RPM, press the clutch, move the shifter, and release the clutch. When you stop, use the clutch and... Automatic transmission: Press here to go, press here to stop.
