*Regarding the Peeper Leviathan one:* Some species of fish have "larval" stages that can be dramatically smaller and/or different looking than their adult forms (Sunfish and certain Eel species come to mind). Fish tend to spawn several hundred, if not tens of thousands, of eggs at once too. Combine those factors, and it's not impossible to think that the Peepers could be the larval form of a certain species of leviathans. If we also consider the way salmon die after spawning, how long it takes for massive creatures to reach maturity (whale sharks take 30), and the bones of mystery some leviathans found in some places on the map that are even bigger than the live ones we encounter, then this theory makes even more sense. Unless/Until there are Peeper eggs in the game, I'd say Peepers being larval leviathans could be a very real possibility.

I kinda figured something was up with Earth. You don't get on a colony ship without a good reason to do so. In most forms of media featuring a colony ship, the people on the ship are there because their home world either doesn't exist anymore or it has become unlivable for one reason or another.

Small correction on one of your points: 4546B is not the origin planet of the precursors, as it is referenced in Subnautica to be an 'outpost' planet of sorts, to guard against and research Kharaa
@captin3149
@captin3149 Год назад
It COULD make sense if they escaped from the dying Earth and colonized another world, but continually returned to Earth to monitor it's possible recovery. Maybe they also tried to help the recovery along by bringing flora and fauna from other worlds to it in order to 'jump-start' the recovery. Not really sure if I believe this, but it would make sense in the context of the main theory.

A personal theory I have is that the Precursors were in the middle of some kind of conflict or civil war during the time when they were researching the Carra bacterium. This is based on the Carra being considered some kind of huge threat to the Precursors, even though such a highly advanced race should be able to easily quarantine and/or flee such a disease. It could never be an existential threat to them unless some hostile force was actively spreading it as a bio-weapon. Additionally, the bulk of their installations are located extremely deep underground, with the primary research facility being built inside of an active magma chamber! There should be no reason to go to such lengths to conceal their research facilities when it would be easier to build them on or near the surface where since they would be closer to the subjects of their research: the Sea Emperors (which were still a thriving species at the time). My theory is that they built the primary research facility in such a dangerous and secluded location to conceal their operations and to protect it from potential attack. Any attackers would have to first discover the location of the facility embedded in the planet’s crust where it is virtually immune to bombardment and then send forces down into those deep waters past all the dangerous creatures inhabiting the route, including Sea-Dragons!

I got an addition to your "earth is gone" theorie We humans name everything, we bond with things for many reasons but the name has a huge impact for that as well Yet what do we name the planets we deal with An Bunch of ID numbers We still name the plants and animals So why did we stop naming the planets? That is weird But if we lost earth, or made it damaged extensively that we had to leave That kind of trauma could set up an habit of numbering planets so we can't bond with an planet so easy, to avoid the pain of losing a planet we care about again

Since Robin refers to the alien gate as a Phasegate, the same word used for the wormholes everyone already uses, I'm assuming they are also of architect origin, left abandoned like the mass relays. I think that means the precursors are just the ones that came before, and this theory is a reach at best.

I don't think Kharra is the galaxy trying to thin out sapient life. The milky way galaxy has something like 400 billion stars. Even if only 1% or less of those have habitable planetary systems, that's still a mind-bogglingly large number. There's basically no way even the most prolific and aggressive of space-faring races could possibly make a dent in resources on a galactic scale. To put it in perspective, Elite Dangerous has a fairly realistic galaxy map. That game released in 2014 and the entire player base have still, as of 2023, only explored less than 0.1% of the galaxy.
@Vohasiiv
@Vohasiiv Год назад
Elite Dangerous is just a game that a relatively small percent of the population plays for fun for a few years. Imagine if a majority of the human population (multiplied each time they conquer a habitable planet) does it full time for hundreds or thousands of years.
@PreceptorGrant
@PreceptorGrant Год назад
@@Vohasiiv I take your point, but interstellar travel in the Subnautica universe is much much slower than Elite's frameshift drive. To colonise a new system requires sending a ship to set up a phasegate, an operation that takes months or years. So the comparison perhaps isn't as flawed as all that. I'd still suggest that even with a species agressively colonising over centuries or even longer, that's still going to be a fairly small proportion of the galaxy. 400 billion stars is a LOT. Even if our expansionist species colonises a million habitable worlds, that's still a tiny fraction of the galaxy.
@jeanmarc6517
@jeanmarc6517 Год назад
@@PreceptorGrant The thing is, the more human there is, the more they expand. Its like that vampire problem, where it would take one Vampire only 33 month to transform the entire earth into other vampire, if each vampire only bite once per day. And with almost infinite time to do so, humans of the subnautica universe could very well explore everything in a reasonable amount of time.
@PreceptorGrant
@PreceptorGrant Год назад
@@jeanmarc6517 Yes, but you're describing exponential growth. If you double with each generation the numbers get crazy, but that's not how humans behave in practice. If your population has a Total Fertility Rate of 2.1, that is every woman has 2.1 children, then the total population slightly grows over time. To get exponential doubling, the TFR would need to be something like 4.1 or more. In developed countries, TFR at the moment is in the 1.5-1.7 range. Now, in Subnautica there's evidence people can live a good deal longer than today, so they'd have plenty of time to reproduce, though likely at a somewhat slower tick rate than today. I'd suggest we estimate one generation every 50 years (this is partially to make calculation easier), as opposed to the 30 or so years at the moment. (Your vampires, of course, can turn someone new every night, which is why 33 months seems so fast). I'd also suggest that an advanced, spacefaring culture would have both pressures to have children and also pressures to refrain. Let's guess the TFR at 3 (to be generous and fair to your hypothesis). Let's start with a population of 10 Billion (10,000,000,000) on one planet. Let's assume 10B is the maximum population each planet can hold. After 1000 years, 20 generations, with the population growing by 50% each generation, we'd be looking at a population of 33.253 Trillion (33,252,567,300,797), across 3,325.257 planets. After another 1000 years, we'd now be occupying 11,057,332.321 planets. That's 0.00276% of the 400 billion stars in the Milky Way (if we're simplistic and assume 1 habitable world per star). To quote the late great Douglas Adams "Space is big. Really, really big. You might think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."

If I were a dev of SN or similar games, I would add the Giant Peeper or other monster in a patch without informing anybody (includong other members), and made all with code in a file with a random name so no file is found referencing them. With small probability of spawning so very few people encounters them, save files would exclude it to prevent people from saving and showing its existence with the save file, make it ignore pause freezing, a sneaky AI would control it, make its attack, always leave 1hp and disappear shorly after. There would be some videos, photos and text showing its existence, but so few and rare, and nobody would think they were saying the truth, taking them as a joke or fake or a mod made by them. And maybe after 10 years, I reveal that it actually existed. You know, to see their (community and workmates) reaction. Luckily for you (and me, probably would get fired or sued), I am not one dev in those games. Yet.

I hate how some people actually believe the theory that 4546B is Earth... Its literally not. Its obviously not. Before the events of Subnautica, it was an unidentified planet that hadn't been explored. The Dagasi crew were the only known humans to have been there prior the Aurora crash. The water levels are crazy high and there's pretty much _no_ land. There are multiple moons, all of which are bigger than Earth's moon, and the planet itself (according to the logs you can find) is smaller than Earth, and orbiting around a completely different star in a completely different galaxy. All the animals are very different, and there's no sign of radiation. If its _really_ been long enough for that to happen, then the humans also would have either died out or drastically evolved during their space travel in that same amount of time. The Precursors are also not human. They did not come from 4546B, they came their to research the Sea Emperor Leviathan in search of a cure for the Khaara bacterium. They do have human artifacts, and their language is at least similar enough for the PDA to translate it, but chances are that's mostly because the Architects (their official name) have most likely been to Earth or at the very least met humans at some point before. They've traveled all over the universe, and have researched a lot of different species and civilizations, and their architectural (no pun intended) style is very different from what humans would realistically use. As technologically advanced as they are, surely they would have records of their past civilization, yet they don't seem to understand human psychology very much, as seen by Al-An's interactions with Robin in Below Zero.

Okay so I really enjoyed these theories, but some of them were kinda ridiculous. For example, the radiation suit saying it’s necessary in a post MAD world tells us that the planet was not destroyed. If it was, they wouldn’t need the radiation suits, because no one would be living there. Second, the theory that 4546B is Earth is impossible. Alterra originates on Earth. They know what resources are there, they know where it is. They would not be exploring Earth to discover its resources and create a phasegate there if they already knew where it was and what was on it. They were really fun theories to listen to though, so great content nonetheless 😅.
