If you're BRAND NEW to skating TRY THESE TRICKS!! If you're teaching someone, teach them these 5 things. Watch to find out why they are important!! Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=109961...
I expected it to be the standard skate content-farm stuff like "Ollie, Kickflip, Pop shuvit, Fs180, Bs 50-50" but instead you focused on things that people can actually attainably do and give a better comfort and understanding of skating. Serious props to you Ben for putting together some modest and well thought out tricks for beginners.
Agreed, this super basic stuff is usually not mentioned at all, which is a pity because getting comfortable on your board with these little drills is super beneficial. I feel like a lot of people drop skating because they don't feel like they're progressing at these extremely early stages where they really need to be feeling like a smooth 180 pivot is an accomplishment. There's a LOT to learn prior to the ollie.
@@kais2345 I don’t feel that these drills are super beneficial, but do think that starting skating and not learning shit is very frustrating. So I think it’s important not cause it makes you better over time but in the way that you feel like you’re progressing which will keep you motivated and stop you from quitting
@@idontdeserveaname1152 i think they're good because learning to be comfortable lifting your tail and moving around like that helps with doing bread and butter tricks like ollies. These are more of basics rather than tricks and are building blocks to get to your first trick
Some parking lot, a dumpster in the back, a curb ledge, an impossible stair set, a waist-high platform/ledge in the back, Now that's a core street spot right there hehe
That's the classis neighborhood shopping center skate spot right there bud. Almost exactly what I had as a young pre-teen skater and practicing the exact tricks he was doing in the vid too!
I use to skate something like this as a kid as well. Now that I’m older and just got back into skating this looks a little big for me. Lol. I prefer more of the smooth concrete at parks now. Gotta use what you have in reach though!
finally some REAL beginner advice..not some edgy douche-bag calling certain tricks easy..i'm sorry (not really lol) if you think ollies are easy..they are NOT for a total beginner..please keep em coming for us older skaters, i speak for most ppl here!
You should like REALLY think about your movements and how you’re moving your body. It took me less than a day to learn ollies and most of my friends did it in a few days. Like if it doesn’t work a few times just record yourself doing it and you should see the problem. Try to really get that muscle memory as well by sliding your foot across the board while stepping on the tail.
I say it all the time, ollies are not easy and not the place for a beginner to start! It’s easy to rush and want to learn, but it’s not going to do you any good if you don’t have other simple basics down like board control, pushing, turning, stopping, manualing, etc. Everyone learns at a different pace for different factors. Time on the board being a big one. Let me know if I can help in any way!
@@SkatingwithAaron well obviously board control, and everything cruising is like the very basis of skating and where everyone should start, but once you actually want to start doing tricks the ollie is probably the first or second trick you wanna learn, if you can't ollie and you really wanna learn a trick a shuvit will be just as good to practice tricking. I can already heelflip and my manuals are shit, i can manual like a few meters. I say it's up to preference.
They're riding boards like they can do all those tricks no experience like little kids trying to jump into their moms pocketbooks on that sugar rush lil omg let me have no style just chop the cube. It's okay. I spend time walking raving going to shows skating through town taking trains subways like going errywhere up on this east coast. I got 4 bucks to catch a train to get to nyc I spent a month homeless on the beach that was cold lol.
Y’all sound mad salty that kids are progressing fast, they’re not “rushing progression” just cause they are getting good fast. If you do a trick long enough you’ll eventually end up getting style. If the kids who “rushed their progression” can do a kickflip I guarantee that they could do every trick in this video
When I took my motorcycle class they told us the best place to practice is parking lots like schools. Riding a motorcycle fast is easy. It’s the slow speed maneuvering that needs the most practice. Whoever that is, they are just like us, taking the extra effort to improve.
Yup my brother does freestyle with sport bikes (standing on the tank and stuff) and he practices all the time in parking lots. Him and my motocross family members taught me the same thing, you get better going slower, not putting your feet down, and leaning.
Former motorcycle instructor and skater of 24 years here. Parking lots are your friend for both hobbies. Work your way up to third gear. You don't need to know how to kickflip before you can kickturn and you certainly don't need to be able to ride on the highway before you can make a tight turn in a lot. Stay rippin' and riding. 🤙😎🤙
34 learning to skate, here. Been watching your channels for some months now and I gotta say sometimes the skateboard aches make me feel much older, but the good days make me feel 15 again, and it's great.
35 year old here and two weeks in to skating. At first it sure was abit feeling like "Is this how midlife crisis looks?" :D But what I like the most, even with basic stuff I am doing right now, is thinking "Ok, I can do this" And then doing it. Seeing progress, even tiny progress, can feel so rewarding.
47 years old and re-learning. I try to approach each session like you would any workout, warm up, work on specific skills through repetition, and most of all have fun. Board set up is also key, unless you have a local skate park go with a softer wheel. The first few times back on my board with harder wheels I was getting taken down by pebbles in the road. Also find someplace close to home you can session. I have a school a few minutes from my house that has lots of fun elements. Another game changer for me was pads and wrist guards, although I look like a big dork I can walk away from the occasional slam.
@@shawnblatter1732 yeah that's what really works best for me. At the beginning if I thought I nailed something (basic maneuvering mostly, nose stalls, etc no real tricks) I'd move on. Gotta drill it. And yeah I swapped from hard to kinda hard 56 wheels (100+ to 92), and also sized up from an 8 to a tapered 9 and it made a huge difference. Couldn't quite keep my clown feet comfortable on the small one, and I don't foresee flip tricks in my near future haha
Thanks for focusing on REAL beginner tricks rather than what beginners like to rush into. Honestly, a beginner should spend the first 4 months learning to cruise and doing these 5 things (along with kickturns on ramps and banks) before even thinking about shuvs or ollies. I spend about 2 months learning to cruise before obsessing over the ollie only to plateau in progress and realize I didn't have nearly enough board control to progress. Not only did I have to go back and learn these, I now had to work out a ton of bad habits I developed learning the ollie before I was ready.
Thank you, that will help me get better on my board ... me ... 44 years old ... started skating a few month ago ... road to ollie! 😆😃 Greetings from Austria ✌
It definitely can be done!! Make sure you ride around on your skateboard as much as possible. It counts even more when older to get comfortable on the skateboard.
@@Ya_mamma That’s awesome keep it up! Gotta love the feeling you get when you first learn/ land something new. I think we’re all probably addicted to it! Keep pushing!
Wow. I’m a 40+ newbie skater just making my first attempts. I have no ambition about becoming a pro trickster, but just want to have fun. This video was really great and showed some moves I could actually do, and was just a massive confidence booster. 10 out of 10. Great stuff!
Love the way you break things down, some of this I've been picking up on in my past month or so learning to skate, but it's great to hear someone else reaffirm some of those things, and have someone who pays extremely close attention to detail giving helpful little tips! It really makes a difference, thanks!
I don't consider myself a beginner anymore but these are great tips! I've seen too many skaters jump into trying tricks without getting their balance and fundamental movement down first. Super important 👍
I like your tutorials among the different and suppose to be 'great teachers of how to' in videos. It's very clear, no bs and have a good amount of replay footages or slow mo for us the begginers..Thanks a lot for making and sharing it
I was like; 'wait, did Ben change his channels name?' 😂 glad to see that you're doing content which focuses on learning skating too! Love the main channel as well by the way
This is honestly the best video I've seen explaining these beginner "tricks". These are all easy to pick up, and take a while to practice reliably. Thank you so much, I'm just starting to practice ollies, and these tricks are helping me get even more comfortable on the board 👍👏
Exactly Ben, I always say to new skaters that everything they do on their board all builds confidence and skill/balance. Once you feel more comfortable you no longer have to think about moving around on the board leaving you to concentrate on just the trick itself 👍😊
This is the best beginner skate video out there. Everyone should start here. Rather than starting with "beginner tricks" like a shuvit or drop in (leaving a beginner with questions like "but where are my feet? but how do I land?") you're just breaking down the fundamentals of skating into a series of drills to learn best technique. I've been looking for this video since I started. Well done!
I've only been skating a month and found your channel to be one of the best skateboarding channels on RU-vid. This video couldn't have come at a better time as I've been looking for some tricks to work on since I've mastered kickturns and tic-tacing keep up the great work 👍
As a beginner I just wanna say I really appreciate this video. All the other "beginner tricks" I've seen start with an ollie and go from there, and as someone who's still tryna get their balance it's really overwhelming to be thinking of doing those. These tricks/tips are so useful and really build your confidence up on the board
Just started skating at the age of 36, this is sooooo helpful! While i m not in a rush to ollie or anything, i really enjoy practicing these!! Thanks Ben!
been watching your videos for the last month while im learning to skateboard (at 31 lol), and man you have really helped me improve. Im way more comfortable on my board now, and im seeing improvement just about every time i go out and practice. Thanks again man, you the MVP!
no one else told me to learn it, i kinda stumbled on most of those myself trying to learn other "begginers tricks"... i wish someone would have. thank you for making this video!
I subscribed after seeing your 3 tips for an ollie. That together with this video makes me feel like youve gor the best progression tips out of any other channel I've seen yet. As a beginner, its this sort of stuff that keeps me skating🤙 Cheers
@@fastfaps cheers dude. At 27, picked up skating to get me out the house during lockdown and finally make my teenage self proud. Get some looks when you're this age kicking about in all the protective gear 😂
Your lessons are great, it's been about 12 years since I skated. Lock down got me making ramps in the shed and I quickly realised I am not 16 any more. So I've been using your videos to get back to basics and reclaim some of my old skills, and also learn some new ones! Thanks heaps Also, the Motorcyclist was probably just a beginner looking to practice away from traffic. Whenever I've taught a new rider, the first thing I do is take them to an empty parking lot.
Thanks for the advice Ben, I’m teaching my son how to skateboard and it’s good to be reminded of these steps. Growing up as a kid in the 80’s you had to learn the tricks yourself or just watch Bones Brigade videos and dream of what you wanted to do. Skipping important steps has now led me to be able to rock’n roll on a half pipe but for the life of me can’t figure out how to do something as simple as a no comply.
Thanks for the vids man, I'm starting to feel that board control on the flat after following your tips, took it to the ramp today for the first time and I think it really helped me staying stable in the transition
The end of the vidéo got me ! I was looking so hard at that gap haha ! And when I was quitting the video, you early grabbed it, and then again with the melon grab, rad !
Thanks so much man this video actually teaches me how to do a trick that can make you improve and just a easy trick in general. Keep up the good work! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great video Ben. I'm pushing forty and getting back into skating. Def remember you from games of sk8 at Gordo 98-99. Who did 540 flips back then! Anyway thanks for these videos! Not just for beginners, but super helpful for someone getting back into skating again. Helpful for waking back up the muscles of old (rather than going for the big tricks again!). Funny ending -ha!
LOL. You are quite dorky and super wholesome. Love the positive attitude and... wtf why am I not subbed? I've followed your vids for a while. Anyway. Subbed.
Just started skateboarding just subscribe to your channel keep these videos coming I would like more of a guide as a beginner skater. And your videos are great
I'm not a complete beginner anymore, just wanted to pass along that the last 4 of these and somewhat harder variations have become total child play now with the DLX true fit mold you helped me find. Greetings from Germany and thanks again.
Thank you so much! I am a 28 yr old female and i wanna learn more about skating. So far, i can ride around etc but never felt like i actually started because all those videos say like an ollie is the 1st thing lol. But i can already do about three of your beginner tricks so now i at least feel like i know a bit already. 😁
I never understand why people bother to click the thumbs down on videos like this. I'm guessing on this one it's because it's too simple and they're not "tricks". So this video is not for you then, move on and let the people that need to see it, see it. This is great for beginners.
BIKER: "..and here are your top 5 beginner motorcycle tips...wait, I don't know why there is some skater over by the dumpster making all kinds of noise with his board, but I'll just keep recording." LOL.
A lot of people are like wow you can't even Ollie after only the TWO WEEKS that I have started skating. Thank you for setting realistic goals for real beginners.
I am a little more advanced than this, but I think this is amazing advice for beginners. It is important to spend at least a week just riding your board, and trying tick-tacks, instead of learning ollies right away like most people do.
this kind of stuff is beyond important. i love seeing more people getting into skating these days but trying to drop in on a concrete quarter pipe when you don't have basic board control is really pretty stupid. i'm so glad my friends taught me how to tic tac before anything else cuz it teaches you how to be comfortable shifting your weight and moving around. everyone should really learn that stuff before you even try to ollie cuz it will help immensely
As a motorcyclist I will say , I always rip a few circles in a parking lot before a ride to get my tires warmed up snd practice looking throughly through my turns
I hadn't even considered the IDEA of practicing my kickturns/tictacs WITHOUT turning first to get familiar with the lifting.... there are so many things you just ASSUME you have to do that make things so much harder than they need to be..... lesson of the day.... if you're struggling with something you can almost always break it down into smaller parts
