Hey Jim, enjoy watching your videos on the Snapper mowers. Much better than most others I've seen but here's something on the no reverse stuff that I've not heard or seen in any videos nor help blogs or other forms. Had one that used to go in reverse but then got to where it would only back up if I gave it a push by foot then if was iffy. So I watched yours and a few others of which they talked about adjusting the crank plate down to where it contacted the drive wheel better or moving the clutch spring to different positions and about the wear in the track where it moves the drive wheel to different positions on the crank plate for different speeds or reverse. Well I lifted mine up on it's end today and went to checking. The crank drive plate adjustment was good so I moved the clutch spring. and checked the track where the gear shifter travels appeared to also be in good shape so figured the clutch spring move may have done the trick. Put mower back on all fours and fired her up. Still wouldn't budge in reverse. Lifted it back up and investigated further. As I was running the shifter through the gears I notice that going to reverse the drive wheel barely moved past neutral. Got to looking and notice the plate the shifter is mounted on has slots where the bolts are so I loosened them off and adjusted that plate to where when I shifted to reverse the drive wheel moved much further over onto the crank plate. Put her back down on all fours, fired up and Bam we are back in the backing up game once again. It does seem to have taken away some speed in the forward gears but I just run it in 3-5 now and works and mows good. Actually 3 and 4th are a pretty good speed for mowing.

Thank you! I have just recently started watching your videos and subscribed. So far I've gotten through a few of your complete rebuild videos and am looking forward to watching more. My fiancé and I just acquired an older Snapper rear engine mower and it has at least one issue so far and it is that either the battery won't accept a charge or I have wiring or stator issues. I have a feeling that it's the battery because after mowing the backyard I've noticed that there's enough charge in the batt to turn the engine over a couple of times and that's about it, not enough to start it. I haven't been able to date the mower yet but I've been able to decode the model number. It's model # 26657 BE. 26" cut, 6.5HP, 7 series, Briggs & Stratton electric start. I'm thinking that it's from the mid 80s to somewhere around 1990 or so but the engine isn't original, it's a B&S 11HP I/C flathead built in 1987. Anyway, I haven't had a chance yet to go over it real good but it cuts our backyard pretty darn good so we're happy with it ! Again, thanks for the videos and help, I really appreciate them...

Hi again Jim. I realize that this is an older video but I recently had a problem while I was mowing about a week ago and just wanted to mention this in case someone else had this problem. My mower deck has the same style heighth adjustment lever that the one in this video has. It doesn't actually lock after you've adjusted it up or down, it just relies on friction (and probably some kind of detent)to hold it. When I was mowing over and around some tree roots I think that the mower deck bumped into them and suddenly the blade hit the inside of the deck and came to an abrupt stop. I pushed the mower onto flatter ground and leaned it up on its stand and noticed that the bottom of the deck was bent up pretty bad in several places and the blade had cut a small sliver of deck steel out. Nothing major but enough that the blade would not turn past it. I then took the new 33" blade off and reinstalled the old 30" blade so that I could finish mowing until I could get the deck back into shape. What I didn't notice after I got it back on all four wheels again is that when I started to mow the deck was practically in the dirt. I scalped a strip of grass before i realized what had happened but i guess when the deck hit the roots it bounced it up and back down and caused the deck to fall to the shortest level. My father has a newer Snapper, about a 2010 model, and the deck adjustment lever actually locks into a metal groove so to speak which would probably never fall by accident like mine did. I like his much better and now I'm going to try to come up with a way to lock the lever once it's adjusted so that this doesn't happen again....

Do you feel that these snapper lawn mowers are quality? I just got one used and am having troubles with it moving slow in drive. I have taken the it back twice now but so far no luck. I have a feeling that the guy doing the work hasn't work on one of these before.

Can you do a detailed video of the double bagger? Is it easy to remove for mowing? I only want it on for leaf season. Thanks for the great vids. You are why im buying one of these great lil machines.

Thanks for the videos! I got an older snapper off a friend of mine for free. It didnt run and it sat out in back of his yard. Ive been fixing it up piece by piece and finally got her running. The last issue i have with it is not getting it in reverse and delayed shifting after i switch gears. I will let go of the clutch and nothing happens for a second then it jerks forward into gear. Should i try checking with the methods in this video first? Or is there a bigger issue?

Hey Jim I have an old LT12D33 snapper front engine rider. Your video has explained why mine sometimes works in reverse and sometimes doesnt. I believe the shifter linkage needs to be greased. The problem I have is it keeps throwing the deck belt when I mow. Cant even get 10 feet and it throws the belt. Any suggestions on how to adjust the belt.

My older model has a park brake arm on the yoke that wont let you push the machine unless the clutch is mashed halfway. Very aggrevating.Have to tie pedal down with a strap.Gonna take a sawsall and cut that arm off.

Do you think that any of there motors will work if so what do I need to look at like How long of a shaft it has I am sorry to bother you but a woman I use to mow her yard gave me this riding mower and she is dead now so it means a lot to get it going and not letting it rust to the groung

Got a First Gen Comet 8- Shift got real stiff. Looking at it, the Pin hadbroke off in the Shift Handle, so I replaced it w a Bod. But with the Mower tipped up, I see the Shift doesnt move the Clutch assembly But a little bit. 5th acts like 1st and I have no reverse. Ideas?

Hi Jim, I have a 1991 snapper 9 HP rider. I have a problem with the mower while running. It was working fine, but then started toact as if I am getting off the mower causing it to shut off. At first it was starting to shut down when turning, but then it just shut off. I think it may do with the safety shutoff for getting off the mower without engaging the brake and setting the gear in neutral. I checked for a loose wire but did not find any. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jerry.

Snappers are not supposed to go in reverse with the blade turning, check the lockout part on enstruction manual

So do they stay in reverse once engaged or does the shifting lever have to be held in reverse. I'm having to hold mine

Right now none it had an 8hp on it it was the white motor but it locked up and I took it off

Hi Jim my name is Jeff Gordon and I have a snapper with a 16hp v-twin vanguard engine. The problem I'm having with it is that it will crank only while the starter is turning ( hold key to crank ) once the starter seats the engine will die. This one has a 42in cut deck.

My snapper mower 12 1/2 horse power 30 inch deck will only mow in first gear I can shift to second third fourth and fifth but it only stays in first gear. I need some help

I wish I would have seen this video before I bought this mower. The mower has a gear that moves up to a flywheel on the engine shaft, 1st gear barely moves the mower, reverse work all other gears are in operative.

Well I'll be checking all that new stuff out its been about 12 years sense I've fooled around with a snapper mower. This is gonna suck i believe I'll find bad shit on his mower he keeps it covered up outside but its still outside in the open were it can get weathered faster than it being in a shed or garage

Hi Jim, I have a snapper rider model 7800954-00. serial 2016705442. it fires right up but as soon as I put it into gear it shuts off!!

The old one I was given won't roll backward in neutral. It seems to roll forward. Is this normal? I haven't had a chance to really inspect the gears, yoke, and so forth.

If the sensor on the mower blade deck isn’t plugged in will that cause the mower to not start, I didn’t know what that sensor was for, it has two plugs each with single wire and mine are frayed real bad with wire showing and almost broke completely

I just checked my friends snapper mower done a test ride on it and the transmission is slipping plus a gear was grinding as it goes forward and reverse you can hear it grind like a slipping sound It makes the gear grinding sound on the right side i don't think it'll be a hard fix
