Today I’m tattooing myself with a 5300 year old body modification. This primitive tattoo is an homage to some ancient #tattooing history and to #Otzi #theiceman, as well as an update on my process of learning the art of #primitivetattooing. I don't know a whole lot about this subject yet or about tattooing in general. But I'm learning as I go and picking things up from various sources. To everyone out there currently doing primitive #stickandpoke or other primitive tattooing, you're awesome, and I'd love to know about your work. To those considering giving it a try, be safe and smart about it. Don't just copy me on a whim or do anything that might compromise your well being. Thanks for watching everyone!

Ive already done this with regular tattoo ink and a sewing needle but this finally made me decide to go more traditional. For charcoal I will use wood from a forest on Bennachie , the site of an Iron age hillfort here in Scotland. I'll use local flint to make the cuts and vodka from a local distillery that uses local produce. Thanks , Ross...from Dundee , Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

That sounds awesome man! I’ve been enjoying incision with stone. It produces very visually interesting results. I’m planning quite a few more of them. Good luck with yours!!

Just a wee update , the method of cut and rub using flint never worked but the hawthorn method worked good and the ink has held! Look up the Pictish tribes of north east Scotland , we have sculptured stones with mystery symbols. Some say the Picts themselves were tattooed with these symbols , the word "Pict" came from the Roman description of us , possibly meaning "painted ones". 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Glad to hear back from you! I too have noticed that some cuts have not held as well as others, but I think it has a lot to do with the depth of my incision. Each time I have gone back and redone them, they have turned out. That’s great that the stick and poke worked out though! I see. Those stones are pretty cool. Definitely the style of art I appreciate in tattooing.

It’s totally doable. I spend time making sure the design is just how I like it, and I’m careful not to get the open wounds contaminated. Apart from that it’s pretty straightforward. Stings a little, but it’s worth it!

I've grown up surrounded by Osage orange and honey locust thorns, and I've been thinking to myself about giving myself primitive tattoos for years, I just may try it one of these days with the locust thorns, I'll be sure to let you know how good or bad they do! I'm sure i'm not the only one who would love to see this series updated someday

I have some locust thorns up for trial, but haven’t had the time yet to try them. I just recently did some more work with obsidian blades as well deer antler. I apologize for the long wait between videos. It takes me a while to switch between projects sometimes, but another one is coming. I hope you do decide to give it a try!

@@EccentricArtisan that's awesome news! I only just discovered your videos but I am looking forward to them now. Also its probably far less primitive than your looking for but I'm a blacksmith if you ever wanted to try a hand forged needle, I've been toying with that idea as well to see what I could make, good luck on your journey either way!

@@porygon110 actually I have interest in most any materials pre-1800s, so hand made steel and copper are definitely on my list to get to!

Hey man, I'm a fan of Ryan Gill and decided I want to hand poke a while ago after watching his video on the subject. Your videos defenitely helped because of the detail and advice, but I live in the PNW where we don't have osage, so I think I will try bone needles. I might also try to just dot the lines like you do and gradually fill them in over time to speed up the healing process between sessions as an experiment. It will be a few months before I get back home and will be able to give it a shot, but I'll be sure to make an update about my experience!

Bone is the way to go man! I’ve been using it and love it. Shaping a really well refined needle is key. I too am a big Ryan Gill fan. I love his hunting and build videos and really appreciate the studies he does. Also own one of his bows. Sounds good man. Experimentation with different ideas is what I live for. I’d love to hear back about your experience!

I got tatted by some nuts monk in thailand with the ol' sticky-pockey a while ago, love that tatt...TOOK AGES THO!!... didn't realize lol.. but he used a "Hitting stick" (dunno what it's called) and I THINK a sharp bit of bamboo?..anyways...worth the grind.. I wanna do this to myself .. the WHOLE Otzi Tatts..(as long as I CAN do all.)

Ahhh, yeah he used the tapping method. Very cool. I have attempted it yet. I’ve been enjoying bone and stone tools recently though. I wish you luck with your own tattoos dude!

You should use bones as a bundle of splinters tied on a wood. Ore use Teath like Maori.

Also why don’t you try using a tapping style similar to the Hawaiian style of tattooing (probs not on your wrist maybe when working on leg)
@EccentricArtisan

Yep, tapping is on the list too. I have little experience, and I want to get a decent grasp on each method as I go. So I’m learning, slowly but surely.

How long do these charcoal tattoos last? I would imagine that they fade quite quickly compared to modern tattoo inks.
@EccentricArtisan
@EccentricArtisan Год назад
Funny enough, that seems to be the natural assumption. Not sure why people come to that conclusion, but even I was wondering myself before I started. Anyhow, they wear just as well as any modern pigment. One thing with charcoal vs lampblack is that ground charcoal is more of a blue gray after it’s in the skin. Lampblack is a much truer black color. Both look very nice though and last as good as anything. If you want to see lampblack ink I have another video on it.
@hrafnagu9243
@hrafnagu9243 Год назад
@@EccentricArtisan I came to that conclusion considering charcoal might be broken down more easily and quickly than artificial tattoo inks. But it's good to know it holds up well.

Watching you learn is inspiring. The way you are adapting and tapping in to ancient knowledge might take you to faraway places if you keep up this pace… my biggest concern is that it seems Otzï was getting those tattoos for relief from a painful degenerative osteoarthritic condition in his hip. Those marks correspond with acupuncture meridians known in Traditional Chinese Medicine and other areas around the world. Many indigenous cultures practised this form of therapy and others still understood the impact this work had on the body. You mentioned suffering from migraines, which to treat would correspond with a different set of meridians on your body. So, you are copying the marks that Otzï had but do not suffer in the same way he did. You cannot see the same “Shaman” that Otzï did but you could at least discuss the meridians that would benefit you, and then tattoo those points instead of trying to relieve someone else’s pain.

Thank you Jeffery. I really appreciate your input. I do know about the acupuncture theory, and I believe it to be the most credible explanation of his tattoos. I actually just have interest in copying this particular one for aesthetic purposes, as Otzi helped kindle my interest in tattooing. It’s a simple enough visual reference to him and blends well with the look of what I’m working towards. I do understand that some people may disagree with that use, but I don’t find there to be any harm in it. As for migraine treatment, I won’t get into the details. But they are severe, and I am seeing medical professionals for help.
