6.5 Grendel. Does a Trident muzzle brake compensator improve performance?

I added a Trident muzzle brake (JCB Solutions), to my Grendel with a 20 inch barrel to see if performance and accuracy improves. I have my 24 inch Grendel with a flash hider only, for future comparison. Feel free to leave a comment if you can see a visible difference. #6.5Grendel

Whether or not it will improve accuracy is going to come down to how it affects barrel harmonics, so could be an improvement, no change, or make matters worse. Only way to know for sure is to try it. That said, there are tunable muzzle devices where you can dial in the harmonics. I put an old 5/8 30 Cal muzzle brake on at 1022 that had an adapter 5/8-1/2 which can be threaded further in or out of the muzzle brake allowing you to shift the break further out or in to dial in the harmonics. It greatly improved the accuracy, obviously little effect for recoil. The muzzle brake you’re using is tunable. If you get bad groups when you first time it, back it off one turn and snug back down the jam nut. Repeat while monitoring your group sizes until you find the node. If you change your load, you’ll need to repeat the process.

@@patrickgarrett7118 Your not alone. Barrel Harmonics is one of those variables that only the same rifle, action, barrel weight and length, as well as same consistent ammunition can be tested on target. Rifleman agree and disagree using differing measurements to achieve precision and accuracy. Hand loaders experiment with different component (cases, powder, primers and bullets) to achieve absolute accuracy. No two rifles are the same. My channel is more for the "Hunter/Shooter" than the Competition folks. So equal importance is placed on Terminal Ballistics. As the saying goes, nothing is perfect, but practice helps.

At least from the video, the brake appears to work really well. Good shooting and thank you for the info

Nice video. I think it helped the muzzle flip a bit. I’m considering one of these brakes for my Ruger American Ranch 7.62x39. Thanks for the info. 🇺🇸

I did not see any noticeable /detrimental rise in the muzzle ( 6.5 Grendles don't rise or recoil that much anyway). I've been researching the Trident Brake along with a few others for possible installation on my 20" Grendel. The info in all of your videos are very helpful, thanks.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
Thanks for your comment here and for watching. A brake does mitigate the recoil to about even with a .223/5.56...But the increase in noise makes the little Grendel sound like a larger cartridge.

Looks like your Grendel doesn’t mind the heavier bullets, mine is the same way. 123 grain nosler custom competitions seem to group the best for me with CFE 223. For hunting I’ll use a 121 gr Hunter Hammer. I used an Odin compensator. It seems to help keep your view of the target in the scope. Btw, I think I speak for a few others when I say I’m a little envious of your range! Thanks for The videos

Yes and No, Depends on load development. But the Grendel in both my 20" and 24" like the 100g to 120g. Heavier bullets were hit and miss. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

It looked like it helped muzzle flip a little. Shooting off hand would probably make a more noticeable difference. Nice groups.

I was curious as to if you can see the bullet hit target. I like a muzzle brake on low recoil rifles if it works well, you can see the bullet hit target that without the brake you would not be able to. I do have brakes on a lot of my rifles. I am looking at one of these brakes to put on a 6.5 PRC Savage Tactical rifle. I am sure it will do fine for my purposes of recoil reduction. But I do have a Grendel that I would not mind having one for if you can see the bullet hit target. Nice nuts and bolts type review.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 2 года назад
At closer range, seeing the bullet hit the target is not possible because there still is momentary scope distortion and eye refocus from your focus on the crosshairs to re focus on the target. A Brake/Compensator combination is a better solution. At longer ranges scope and eye refocus distortion from the shot is minimized allowing your eye to correct to the target and therefor allow to call and spot your shot. Thanks for watching.

Those 120g Sierra Pro hunters shoot excellent ... I put a Brake on my Tikka 300wsm and it's works great , personally don't see much advantage having one on smaller calibers , but that only my opinion ... Great video once again Dave 👍

My main purpose to minimize muzzle climb, so I can spot the shot through the scope, especially for fast follow up shots.

I might get me one of them for the Savage 110 Tac 6.5CM. I had a Mechforce before. That had to be timed with the crush washers. What a pain! I ended up using a shim and an o-ring to get it timed properly. In the end, it cut the recoil down a fair bit. But the accuracy suffered from the build up of carbon behind the Brake. So I ditched it

I jumped back n forth to try for a better “before & after,” & it does seem your barrel tip rose a hair less, & that your recoil was reduced ever so slightly. Regardless, great video & Thank You for posting!

You might try a rapid fire or a moving target to test if the brake affects target tracking after shot.

i feel that when using boat tail bullets can benefit from a brake bcause a large plume of gas that is vented ahead of the bullet while in the barrel.

I have to ask what your thoughts are on the muzzle break? Has it helped, hindered or no real change? Watching the video and going back and forth a couple of times there is a reduction in muzzla rise. I can see where someone that is accustome to recoil of full rifle cartridges wouldn't think to much of recoil from Grendel.

I am a big believer in "Recoil reduction to minimize muzzle jump." Regardless of the caliber, standard or magnum, being able to stay on the shot through the scope and on the target improves ones fundamentals.
