Part one of a six day solo backpack fishing trip into the North Cascades National Park. It was planned as an out and back solo backpack fishing trip totaling 75 miles hiked over the six days on the East Bank Trail along Ross lake. Until this point in the backpacking trip, everything was awesome! Had a big rainbow trout catch and cook, swam in the lake and generally had a great time. I even had the entire camp on night one to myself! Stay tuned for PART TWO to see when the ship starts sinking and hear me give all the details.
Part two: • 6 DAY SOLO HIKING NIGH...

Let's talk about those shoes - they look perfect for stomping around in the water in the PNW --- give em a plug? (The ones you're dunking in the water that look like black SOS pads)

how do you hang food in Cascades. The trees do not have branches that stick out 5 feet - the snows bend them down at elevation. The few people that i have seen hang food hang it lower than PCT says and closer than 5 feet to the trunk of a tree. Appears most do not hang food . I tend to be in the south WA cascades Indian Heaven - biggest fear misquitoes - most important gear bug netting!! By chance do you have grouse feathers for fly tying?

Hanging food in the Cascades can be nearly impossible, ESPECIALLY at high elevation! That's why I don't bother with it 😀 I actually use an Ursack Major XL with an OP sack in it. You tie it to a tree trunk, rock or whatever far from camp. It is much lighter, 8.8 oz, than a canister, more convenient to pack, holds about a week's worth of food and I love it. Hope that helped! I currently don't have any feathers but I'd certainly be willing to save some 😀

I am getting ready to explore Olympic with a couple friends. After they fly home my plan was to go up to north cascades to do some solo hiking, fly fishing, camping with a mix of long day hikes, overnights, possibly multi-day..I've never been up there and I am a bit intimidated/ wary of getting lost or from animal danger. Obviously I have to use common sense and come prepared, but I don't want that to keep me from exploring such a beautiful place. Any advice on where I can park my suv prior to getting on the trail or good single overnight, two night, hiking trails that would include trout fishing/good views?

Definitely get out and explore the North Cascades! They are an absolutely amazing place. Olympics are pretty bad ass too. There are tons of well marked trails. I wouldn't worry too much about getting lost or about bears.. very rare that one actually bother you. Plus if you properly store food and bear spray (or other protection), you should have nothing to worry about. I think a good place to start is the Ross lake area. Lots of clear trails and awesome area. Stop in at the ranger station in Marblemount to get a permit and the rangers there can definitely help out too. Happy hiking!

Absolutely! The Trekology pillow is fantastic AND about 1/3 the price of more name brand pillows... www.amazon.com/dp/B07MG5YCHJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_NSKMW2QFNMTGWNDC8BGW
