Surprisingly, one of the techniques* only barely worked while the other 5 performed beautifully! I started off with the Fire Roll that I top boarded with an old fire board, then twisted up 4 plies of Jute for a bow drill bowstring, built up that friction fire to cook my tin containing the bowstring into char, solar ignited Jute, solar ignited ashed Jute, ferro rod ignited jute, and lastly ignited the charred Jute Bowstring.

A square drill works well, with rounded corners, of course. There is no slippage of the bowstring.

Great job David !!! I was surprised the flint and steel didn't do it

Yeah, surprised me too. Shouldn't have though. I finally remembered that 3 years ago I had the same results. Oops!

Lol. It's better than rocket science because in a survival situation a rocket isn't going to help me cook food, boil water or stay warm. I'll take the die hard forgotten tried and true old ways.

A good striker you can keep on you at all times is a P-51 or a P-38 . They have a sharp 90 degree spine plus the little blade if needed but the edges are sharp enough . And of course you would have a excellent can opener also 😉

CCI standard velocity 22lr ammo is subsonic, cycles semi autos great, and will connect with more energy than most designated subsonic or quiet ammo. It is also more affordable and generally easier to find.
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 3 года назад
There still may be cycling problems because the sales info says ideal for bolt action and single shot.

Thanks, David - I have messed around with Jute for tinder but never thought of trying it as char cloth(have a piece of Jute in my tinder bag). Didn't think it was strong enough to make a bowstring so never even thought of doing that but now see how it can be done. Love watching these videos and am going to try the charring bit just to say I did and see what results I get with my old string ball of Jute.
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 3 года назад
My charred Jute wouldn't flint and steel ignite. It may be because of all the oil that was in this ACE Hardware brand. Let me know if yours does better. Thank you!

Outstanding demonstrations of those techniques. Thank you. Okay I realize I am three years late to this party. Suggestion, turn up your mic, or the sound on your video. My PC had the sound is over 50 and it still was difficult hearing you. Yes, on the video the sound it on its highest setting, yet I must turn up my PC sound very high. Noticed this watching some of your very recent videos as well.

I carry about a 6 foot hank of waxed jute in my fire kit. I'm a big fan..makes an outstanding birds nest. The wax extends the burn time so it doesn't just burn out before you can get your kindling going.Plus you can use it as a match. Been carrying and using jute for years, but I have to admit..never even thought about charring it, lol. Ash infusing it either for that matter. Love watching you demonstrate all these techniques. I've learned a lot from you! Thanks for all you do, and WEee'll see you on the next one!
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 3 года назад
I know that waxed Jute burns on and on. I don't think I'll be charring it anymore though. I had the same experience with it not being flint and steelable about 3 years ago, now that I think about it. Weeeee"ll catch you on the next one!

It's probably a good idea to make the fire rolls up ahead of ttime and corry them in a container, just to save soem time.

You often refer to “common wood ashes” so im curious to know if that includes the pine straw and leaf ashes from your tinder bundles you use to start fires and then drop them into the stove?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 3 года назад
Yes, the ash from most plants will fire roll.

Are you using the wireless mic still? Sound is awesome through the bow drill at least.
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 3 года назад
No. It turned out to be junk! I lost a lot of good video by the time I noticed. The problem with cell phone mics is they zero in on and amplify sounds from the neighborhood. When I star talking again the volume goes low till the mic zeros back in on my voice.
@El-Burrito

Why is it so much quicker to ignite when you add ashes?
