One thing that could be added to this list is to not be impatient with your snake. I always see people on RU-vid who, when putting away a snake, touch the snakes tail to get it to go back into its enclosure faster. All this is doing is scaring the snake and stressing it out. A little patience goes a long way.
@reptiliangarden
@reptiliangarden 4 года назад
Elisa Laubenstein That is true!!! I do this sometimes when my snake just stops moving, but I can tell she doesn’t stress out. But I’ve seen a lot of snakes freak out over this and it does appear to be stressful. That’s a great tip!

Sweaty hands can stress a small, nervous snake. I’ve had this happen many times. If the snake can’t slide easily across your skin, they might feel like they’re stuck. My juvi carpet python goes into panic mode when this happens. So I keep a little cup of corn starch nearby to dry my hands if needed🤓
@Upper_echelon_exotics
@Upper_echelon_exotics Год назад
I'm guessing it doesn't even have to be sweat then. I'm sure if you had just washed your hands or something and didn't dry them well it could cause the same problem.

Great tips! One thing I'd like to add on the subject of stress is that a little stress is okay, and even necessary to socialize the snake. Remember that snakes in the wild are moving around, exploring new environments and encountering new things, and all of that is both enriching and stressful. You can build up a snake's stress tolerance by exposing it to new stimuli on a regular basis, just by holding it, letting other people hold it, and letting it crawl around safe places. This is how you socialize a snake, and a well socialized snake can be taken out and about to things like educational programs (and I dare say, even an occasional bar outing if management allows it - these can become opportunities for education too!). Problems happen when you take a snake that's used to spending almost all its time in one or two environments and then you take them to a new stressful place. Also, every snake is an individual, and what's comfortable for one could be stressful for another, even of the same species, so you gotta know your animals and make choices based on their individual personalities. Just what I've learned in my 15 years keeping. :) I plan to do a video on the topic some point myself. I think your tips are great though, especially the part about new keepers being nervous while handling. Confidence is key! Good stuff.

i know this isn’t about snakes but, i thought of it when you were talking about bringing your snake everywhere, i saw this girl on tik tok that takes her baby chameleon everywhere, to the store, school for many hours etc. she says that it’s not stressed because it’s not changing colours... I don’t know but to me it doesn’t seem to great...

I wish I could like this video several times. This was so needed, both to new and veteran keepers. It's just nice to have someone explain all the details from bottom and up. Thanks a ton for letting me know I do things right ♥ On topic - is leaf litter a good idea? I baked some ash leaves for a couple hours at 120 celsius, let them cool to room temp and put some of them in the enclosure. My corn's first reaction was kinda scared, but of course she's never seen leaves in her life. Thoughts would be deeply appreciated!

2:46 I usually take a few quick pictures and get a weight on my new snakes before putting them away. I allow myself to handle them for a couple minutes. That's to "tide me over" while they get used to their new home. That way if they hide at first then I can at least see their pictures. Also getting a weight when they come in helps if they decide to not eat for awhile. Then I can monitor if they are losing weight or not. If the new snake is a really good eater than I hold them for about 5 minutes a day. Slowly building up how long I have them out. Just because they are eating doesn't make them a good eater. They need to take food from tongs and seem like they really want the food! I don't know how to explain it but you can just tell when they really like to eat. That's something you have to learn from experience. You'll just know that it's going to be fine with that one. If you have any doubts save handling until they have eaten 3-4 times. Eating 2-3 times doesn't necessarily mean that they will be a good eater. I've had a couple take 2 meals and then stop eating. It depends on how much they like to eat! Good eaters won't hesitate too long to eat and may even try to eat you! Lol 😂 If they only want to eat drop fed food...wait on the handling! Probably around 4-5 meals or longer.

@jhouvic
@jhouvic 4 года назад
SnakeDiscovery is a great channel that has a lot of info about Hognose snakes. I think you should investigate about problems getting them to feed. I’ve seen that sometimes they don’t accept mice unless it smells like toad - I guess a tip that Emily (SnakeDiscovery) has is that she keeps toads and when needed rubs the thwarted mice against them (they don’t seem bothered at all).
@sojourner_marina
@sojourner_marina 3 года назад
If you did your research and are passionate about caring for a hognose by all means go for it. It's better to do your research and care for an animal that you lobe even if it might be a bit challenging than opting out for an animal that may be easier to care for but that you don't really want.

Good video.. :) on that fourth point I struggle, though not exactly the way you described.. I have a young rat snake (smaller than Bloom) and it's odd: one day I feel totally comfortable,confident and natural handling her. but other days it's like trying to cut a rock with a knife and I am so worried about making a mistake and accidentally hurting her somehow. However, I can take her out of her enclosure no problem and I’m not at all scared she’ll bite/strike….I’m always as gentle and calm as possible when handling but it’s just in my head that one mistake from me could hurt her and she’s so wonderful and means so much to me I’d never want to hurt her. Am I the only one who has this, how can I improve this?

Geez, I'm going through the same. I feel my depression may be adding stress to my garter snake if she wasn't already stressed. So much so that I sometimes fear holding her, so I haven't truly held her in months, other than taking her out of her terrarium to clean it. But Also, I feel I've caused major discomfort ever since I rescued an abandoned kitten about a week ago. (I doubt her mother left her but the owners did) Silly me thought it would be cool to introduce the two 🤦🏽‍♀️ (Idk trying to be happy) The universe just brought this kitten to me. So, idk, call me crazy. Can you please make a video for those of us who are just as stressed? I do not have IG. Or maybe email me. For starters, I'm a beginner. Found her in my apt complex almost a year ago, which was very odd to see given where I live. I recently moved into the apt and very much still unpacking, decorating, and reorganizing. So I've moved the terrarium 3 times. Everything seemed fine in the beginning - Calm whenever I would handle her and clean her home. She would sit out in a corner under her tree, but usually on top of the tree, or in her hideout log. I Try to clean once a week. But slowed down once I noticed she would hide under her bowl. At first, I thought she just didn't like the hideout I had originally set up, so she made her hideouts 😂. But, also I put way more substrate than before so she was able to make the dig-outs. So I just figured to leave her be. But Other small details have led me to believe I've currently stressed her out if she wasn't before. Again, bringing a 2-week-old kitten home. And one day. Cleaning day, I was just having a bad day and almost went into a mental breakdown. This is what ultimately caused me to think I could introduce the Two living things that were bringing me calmness and joy 🤦🏽‍♀️. Since then she's been under her water bowl. Won't come out. But I see she is drinking water and she did come out to shed skin. seeing several videos, I might have overfed. But she eats like three worms (night crawlers and refuses anything else) every day to every other day, and then suddenly that stopped. well, maybe not suddenly because my husband would fuss to me that I do not need to feed her every day. So there's that, but it's like she would show signs three worms a day was enough. Maybe I'm misunderstanding everything. Every morning I wake up, feed, play music, and talk to her. She comes close to the glass as if she communicating back and does this little dance/head nod when eating 🤷🏽‍♀️ Again, I'm new to all of this and just learning. So I guess I will not be buying a snake outdoor pen for days I want to just bask in the sun. Lol I the sun shines bright into my apt. So maybe thats another reason why she wont come out anymore 🤔 😕 Thank you

Please do not bring your snakes out in public, _especially_ if you have a very large snake! I know it can be tempting to show off that massive Burmese python, but most other people will not be happy about it. The last thing you want is some reptile hater trying to ban snakes because you brought your pet out in public with you.
