Six-year-old Madison’s parents are desperate for Jo’s help with her furious tantrums.
The couple are separated but live just a few houses apart ,but is that close proximity something of a mixed blessing?
Bedtime is scary for Layla, so scary that in all of her five years she’s never slept a night in her own bed. Can Jo persuade her to stay in her room and allow Mum and Dad to get some rest?
At Jo’s advice roadshow she’s wrestling with a parenting generation gap. Dad is 64, mum is 26 and they just can’t agree how to parent.

I don't see how it's anyone's business what relationship consenting adults have, as long as it isn't hurting the kids, bizarre in an unhealthy, kinky way, or anything else like that. Lots of divorced or separated couples make relationships that work for them & kids. For example, my parents didn't live together until a few years after their marriage, and none of us kids were fazed. In fact, us 5 kids were often happily split up between the two households (walking distance a part) and were a bit disappointed when this fine arrangement ended 😉

@colinmorsink9685
@colinmorsink9685 2 года назад
Impressive, really? Making a 'bedtime routine', writing down 'rules'? I seriously hope that you mean this sarcastically! Most if not everything Jo points out or says is actually common sense, sometimes even ridiculous! Parents are basically stripped of parenting and disciplining their kids by social pressure and political correctness! When a kid behaves as bad or even worse then exposed in this (and many other) episode and the only 'punishment' they can expect is a time out, send to their room or they have to do without some privilege's for a short while then these kids will never start behaving and even get worse! We are raising generations of kids that are so privileged, respectless without knowing the meaning of the word 'NO' that it will eventually bite society in the ass!! In which universe do you think it is OK to 'talk' to a kid who is misbehaving as an adult to try and convince them that what they are doing causes suffering and pain to the family? Do you believe a young kid (between 5 and 10 as seen in this episode) understands this and will change his/her behaviour just because parents ask? Time out and the 'naughty' corner or taking away their smart devices have NO impact, a good old slap on the hand or ass will!! We, the generations before, grew up like that and when we misbehaved and got a slap we for sure did not do that again!! I see it all around me, kids that throw temper tantrums at home or in public because they do not get the candy they want or are being told to behave and the utter shame and helplessness of the parents because the time out did not work for the 100'th time is just painful to watch!!

If you use spank the child they are more likely to be physically violent themselves. Punishing is often ineffective. Bribing tends to work better. Catching them when they are actually behaving and praising them.

@@kaija-liisalaakso8266 Bullshit! Bribing them? What will that teach them, that when you bribe someone you will get what you want, sure and explains a lot of scandals now everywhere in society! @@colinmorsink9685 if you just punish or smack they will act up as soon as no one is watching. I am a teacher in elementary school. In my current class are children who are raised very differently. The Kids who are used to explanation and reasoning do ask more questions, speak their mind etc but once I explained my ways and why certain behavior is mandatory in school, they catch on and do it. Even if they are not in the mood. Its the stricht parented kids who are really difgicult to deal with. As soon as you turn your back on them, they stop working, Hit, talk, misbehave. They always need to be rewarded/ bribed and dont listen to simple instructions. You need to scare and punish them. It is timeconsuming to always give out rewards, punishments and stuff. And I do not like punishing or bribing them for a thing they have to do their whole life that benefits them. Also the Kids who are used to reasoning are in General more intrinsically motivated, do well at school and socially, seem more mature. But we life in a country with laws against physical punishment.

@@colinmorsink9685 saying time outs never work is an excuse. This show proves time and time again they do. The parents who spank their kids have badly behaved kids and spank becsuse the time outs "didn't work" and they did after the parent was consistent. Even if it took an hour. You're a lazy parent of you hit your kids. And how are they privileged? Sounds to me like you had bad parents who only hit you and you envy kids who have parents who want to be good parents and do the right thing and raise good kids. And to answer your question, yes they will change their behaviour. Do you not watch the show? Why are you so butthurt that parents don't hit their kids. It's abuse and you're just mad it's not being sugar coated anymore. That "political correctness" you're talking about is calling your ass out and you don't like it. Tough luck, kiddo.

When you were talking about kids eating their food, when I was younger it was my parents, 3 siblings and I, mom cooked pork chops and put the plate of cooked pork chops on the table. Everyone was eating and my brother noticed there was only 1 pork chop on the plate, so what did my brother do, he “called” the pork chop and said when I’m done this one I want the one on the plate. He was full and the final pork chop remained on the plate in the middle of the table. Mom was clearing the table and put that pork chop in my brothers plate so she could wash the dishes. He said I can’t eat it I’m full, she said oh no, u called that pork chop so no one else could have it , so if your not gonna eat it now, this will be your breakfast, YOU DO NOT CALL FOOD WHEN U STILL HAVE FOOD ON YOUR PLATE, so no one else can have it that is unacceptable. What I'm wondering, is this: There's this other show, Real Families, it's called, where child experts do a lot of observation to establish whether a child's behavior is 'just' control, or caused by a an condition, be it physical or mental. I'm thinking about the little boy who cannot stand to eat at the table with his sisters, because, he says, he's so disgusted with the food. This might actually BE food phobia. Isn't it dangerous to advice the parent to be strict and follow through, without any closer investigation? I mean to say, Jo didn't see even a single meal time for herself. It worked in this case, but what if parents with the same problem are watching this and think 'Right, this is the same problem we're facing, we're gonna have to toughen up and be stricter, the child has to play by the rules and eat meals properly'. I imagine that that might lead to traumatic experiences for a child that really IS food phobic. Whereas Real Families makes it a point to establish that you first need to be sure this extreme behavioral issues aren't caused by a medical condition, before you can come down hard on them. This is really confusing me.
@JoanneOz
@JoanneOz 2 месяца назад
I think the idea is that these techniques will reveal whether the child is actually capable of controlling their own behaviour, with the right direction. Most of the time, they are. If the child had an actual health disorder of some kind, Jo is highly trained and experienced and she would pick that up. Sadly, many children are misdiagnosed with behavioural disorders or as being on the spectrum, and medicated, when better parenting skills are really all that's required.
