Even though I'm in my 40's now and thoroughly sick of being a mechanic, I watch your channel and it makes me miss it. I never got to work in a proper diesel shop where things actually got done the right way (that's what made me sick of the trade, shops demanding half-assed work @ astronomical rates)

I know right. They give you trouble for trying to do it right because it's taking longer than they want it to.

I would have removed the hood. 2 hinge bolts and 2 wiring harness plugs. I'm pretty sure that would have saved a lot of time and grief. -js. I owned and drove 4 379's and 1 389, and did a lot of maintenance on all of them. Love the channel!

Seriously considered a serp. conversion on my old 379 when I had the radiator out. Didn't do it in the end, but I am grateful that the trans cooler on that truck was under the driveline in the back.

I always wanted to change my engine over the that system. The engine looks much better cleaned up as to match the rest of the truck. You do great work!
@noonesocial3837
@noonesocial3837 Год назад
It’s a nice conversion, it cleans the engine up really well and gives it a more modern look. Plus the serpentine belts are easier to change if needed. Eventually after I get some body work done and a couple more modernisations on the doors and replace the frame I’ll show it at the Fours States truck show, maybe in 2025. It’s still a work truck so I can only do small stuff here and there. This was a major upgrade that took some planning on my part. The next major thing I need to do is replace the rear diff housing and change the gear ratio to 3:08 to lower the RPMs. I spend a lot of time driving through flavor county (the western states w/ higher speed limits) and as much as I love the raw power it puts out at the higher RPMs it hurts fuel economy; though having said that I’ve actually been getting around 5.9 miles per gallon. Which isn’t bad for a C16 fully loaded on the rolling hills. I’ll run it back to Josh probably in about 9 months (after I pay down a couple things) and have him to put on a single piece manifold and probably a 80mm turbo. It’s a bit of a process. Josh does spectacular work and has a great eye for detail. Well worth the drive.

Planning on getting an older Pete soon here and hopefully I won't have to bring it to a shop immediately but if I do I'm bringing it to you. I have a general distrust for mechanics and shops right now after I had several months of trying to figure out why I was blowing transmissions out back to back on two different trucks. They were tossing in used parts and incorrect parts. Lost allot of money and time I can never have back not to mention just being demoralized and almost quitting at trying to be an owner op. You've given me allot of things to look at when I go to buy my truck and information on just fixing potential issues. I'll have to subscribe since I just haven't done it for whatever reason as well. Really appreciate the content you provide here.

I always wanted to work on the big stuff and your channel is scratching that itch! Love your attention to detail and explanations of what you're working on. It was really cool to hear that customer drove from Texas to Idaho just so YOU could work on it. That customer appreciates a good mechanic, and I can see why he brought his truck to you. Great job! I’m not sure I agree with the customer with what they wanted to do here but the customer is always right. I like my v-belt set up way better than a serpentine setup. No tensioners and if my A/c compressor locks up I’ve got a set of shorter belts in the side box the will bypass the A/c compressor.

Just did a fan hun conversion on a Mack truck. Not even half the job that you had to do but once I had the new fan blades on they were hitting the shroud so I unbolted the shroud and tried to adjust it no luck. After closer inspection there were dents all over the shroud hitting the fan blades used an air hammer to smooth them out and it fit. Took a 3 hour job and made is a 7 hour job. Pity the need guy who has to change the front engine mounts out, with the bolts in from the top will either have to lift the engine up high or remove the damper to get the bolts out of the way to slip the mount out. Nice job on the change over and yes some Cat parts are hard to get, we can only find aftermarket crank seals and no paint.

The final push to electric trucks will be hilarious, as they can't even outperform a 4.8 JD from 20 years ago.

For the longest time, my opinion is truck design are at least a decade behind cars. This apply to ergonomics, engineering and other refinements. Autos got computers and electronics first, and more driver comforts and even aerodynamic streamlining. I see the Perterbilt with what look like 2 garbage cans hanging off the side of the cab (air filters) I guess no one can accuse the engineers of having the slightest care with air resistance. I find it especially amusing some engineers were complaining about the lack of room at the instrument panel for all the stuff they have to install. Next to an ocean going ship, a truck have the most room, I guess those engineers never have to squeeze stuff into the cockpit of a 4 engined airplane.
