Aside from looking nicer, there's a practical reason for engine paint. If an oil leak develops, it's much easier to see the problem early on. Great video.

I measure where the fan is centered before I retrofit a serpentine belt drive. The most important thing is to center the fan in the shroud. Then fit the belt to that set up. I have done the same conversion on older Detroit 60 series engines

He was a wise man to take it to you. Worth the expense to drive there. There are many good mechanics out there the problem is finding them. Most of the car mechanics around here have taken other jobs that are cleaner and easier on their body so it is hard finding anyone that will work on a vehicle that is not new and knows what they are doing. Great job on the video Joshua. Stay safe and healthy.

This is a worthwhile upgrade on an older c15/16 with high horsepower. The v belt setup was inadequate when they were new. I remember around 2000 they started putting an optional "power band" (2 vbelts molded to each other) on them because the fan belts just wouldnt stay tight enough (or have enough grip no matter how tight!) to keep the fan spinning in hot weather. They would slip just a little for a few days until the glazed over then would slip alot until they were replaced. Engines would overheat pulling a hill. The power band helped greatly on a stock engine but put some fuel to it and they just cant keep up. Nice job as always!

Even if you don't need a custom A/C hose, it is good to know your hose fabricator anyway. When I was doing auto repair, there were 3 times I needed an A/C hose. 1. Mazda 3. $150 at the Mazda dealer. 2. Nissan Sentra. $140 at the dealer. 3. VW Cabrio. $350 at the dealer. That's absurd, the hose was basically the same as the other two. We sent it to a local hose fabricator and paid $100 to have it saved. Well worth it. The host had nothing special in it to make it so different from the Mazda or Nissan hose.

Sanden offers many different rear heads for that compressor. You can buy the correct one to fit the original hoses. But since they are 20+ yrs old they are due to be replaced anyway. I make custom and stock replacement ac hoses at home as well as nitrogen pressure testing and charging ac systems.

I'd have made the same retrofit choice as no one seems to make a *good* V belt anymore, at least nowhere near as good as the old ones. Whatever compound they're making them out now hardens too fast, glazes no matter what you, ends up squealing and becomes a whole thing fairly quickly. And that makes home mechanics overtighten belts, and that in itself becomes a whole thing rapidly.. wear out the bearings etc. V belts aren't worth it if you *can* swap it over to a serpentine
@guy386
@guy386 Год назад
That's good to know. I also noticed it was much harder to find the right v-belt anywhere same-day in a fairly large town, whereas serpentines have always been in stock when I needed them.
@kwmiked
@kwmiked Год назад
U wouldn't think it, but when the belt squeals its wearing the pulleys, once I replaced the alternator pulley and the ac pulley, no more glazed belts and squeal when the fan comes on at high rpm with ac going. So when it needs a new ac pump I replace the alternator pulley and belts and it's good to go. Roughly every 2yr on a dump truck
@MacPoop
@MacPoop Год назад
@@kwmiked What's your dump truck got under the hood?
@kwmiked
@kwmiked Год назад
@@MacPoop 2ws and 2 6nz and a tri axle heavy haul tractor with a mbn that is fixed with the proper parts 🤭
@MacPoop
@MacPoop Год назад
@@kwmiked you're lucky you can still get proper parts for it! I do a lot of "future-proofing" myself, thought it was interesting this guy brings a Cat in for a serpentine belt upgrade and I'm sitting here going "that's exactly what I did to my Ford powered boat (old Lima engine)" I can get the entire front drive off a Ranger or T-Bird or Mustang and run the single serpentine not deal with these new junky v belts & try finding new old pulleys once they're too glazed up to use. I don't have anything that big at home (tri axle etc) but I do have a lot of older junk with no other choice but to modify & retrofit as needed.

Pirtek is a company that has shops that can make custom hoses. They also cav mobile vans. I do not know if they are in your area. Their system can let you reuse your hose ends. They cut off the old crimp collar and have replacement collars that will clamp the hose end to the hose assembly.
