In this video, i teardown a 6T40, 6 speed out of a chevy malibu. Has the usual no reverse, no 3rd or 5th. This one is the 4th one i built in about 2 or 3 week period
Gotta tell you buddy...I've rebuilt several transmissions for people and a few for my own vehicles that's saved me a ton of money and has gave me much pride and some enjoyment in doing the jobs myself but I owe it all to good people like you that has taken the time to walk us through it and back on the road happy ...we couldn't do this so easily without you so thankyou thankyou and much respect and wish you well ..keep the videos coming because you help more people like myself than you know...
It is easy to see why the trans needed fixing with that "engine oil" in it. I have a 2012 Holden Cruze which I have only had for a couple of years and it was quite jerky and clunky so I got the transmission serviced. A lot better afterwards and I have just done another fluid change. Shifting like a new one now thankfully. The old fluid had done 90,000 ks so it was past due. Hopefully never have to pull the trans apart in my lifetime but handy to know how it fits together anyway. Thanks
Thanks for the video. My wife's 2012 Chevy Malibu jerked and refused to shift into 3rd. The code was P07bf (Input speed sensor low voltage). I purchased the part, thinking it would be an easy fix. Ended up tearing apart the trans. I was wrapping it up for the night and found a couple plastic pieces under the car that I hadn't heard fall. This video helped me identify the parts and locations. In the morning, I'm going to finish my project. Hopefully, it'll be done raining by then.
@@GaryFerraro I broke it. I reconnected everything the same way as I took it apart. Now, the output sensor is coding. The ECM isn't communicating. And R,N, and D are all drive (low power), and the optional Manual mode is Neutral. Please HELP. I'm 4 hours from home and going to miss a lot of work if I don't get this repaired fast.
Got one of these on a 2011 equinox 2.4l AWD. Is a little slow on the change from 2nd to 3rd. Occasionally, during this shift, the RPMs will shoot up. Seems to work better after it has warmed up. Is this a common problem with a common solution? About 120k mi, fluid is dark. All the other shifts feel fine.
Hi, Gary. Great video! I have a problem with my 2013 sonic's 6T30. Shift between 1st and 2nd gears vice versa is smooth but it wont go to 3rd gear. When in 2nd gear and the RPM goes past 2000, it wont shift, instead it is as seems like hitting acc pedal (RPM keeps going up) but at the same time pressing clutch pedal as if in manual trans. And it will shift back to 2nd gear. And it would stay there no matter how high the RPM gets. Checked the fluid and filter and had them replaced. Checked the internal. But still fruitless.
Hi Gary, I recently assembled a 6T45 GEN1 after a 3 5 Reverse wave plate failure. I assembled it with the updated 3 5 Reverse clutch drum and wave plate saver steel, new steels, wear plates, pistons, rebuilt the pressure sensors in the TCM and fitted a Sonax kit to the valve body. On the test drive it shifted well in all gears for 10 minutes after I reset the shift adaption but I didn't load the transmission up to that point. I was rolling slowly in second gear about to make a left turn at an intersection and applied about half throttle to load the transmission up. Something inside the transmission felt like it let go while in second gear and afterwards, had very little drive in all gears with slippage. Also, the park prawl stopped working. Shifting from D or R into P, a clicking sound could be heard like the prawl was just contacting but not enough to engage. Initially I thought the Snap Ring in the bottom of the case that holds the 2 6 piston return spring popped out of its groove as the problem occurred while in 2nd gear but no, its still in place (it was very difficult to install in the case groove). And maybe the rotating assembly had moved upwards somehow and made the prawl not engage. After disassembly I cant see what the problem is. All snap rings are in place and I cant see any damage to the case or any metal shavings. Could this happen if the updated clutch drum has the older version piston fitted? If so how would that effect the park prawl or maybe that is another problem? Thanks for any advice. Stu
Gary Ferraro I found one of the 2nd gear steels was fitted incorrectly. In the pump case is a small seal that goes to a black plastic piece. It was on the wrong side as another problem. The box now has gears and all is working but it is harsh on 4th to 3rd downshift. I will reset the TCM through TIS and see how it goes next week when I’m back from work. It would be awesome to all of us home transmission repairers if you could upload an assembly video! Thanks mate
Gary Ferraro after the TCM reset the 4-3 downshift felt like it was slipping and vibrating but after a few times it came good and is now great. Taking the trans out of a AWD Diesel Chevrolet (Holden) Capitiva is a nightmare without a hoist but the second time around is faster. I hope I don’t have to take it out again! Cheers
Hi Gary, Just wondering if you have a full video on the 6F50? 2011 mazda tribute, destroyed 1,2 planetary ring gear and planets. Would you replace valve body when severe contamination exists? or can you clean and reinstall?
I have a teardown video on the 6F50N, I would change the solenoid pack, with that amount of damamge, make sure all the valves are free in the valvebody
I keep getting a P0723 and a P0501 which points to the Output Speed Sensor. Is it likely to be this sensor it would it be the TCM failing. The transmission shifts fine until this code puts it in limp mode. Fault only occurs after 1hr + of driving. Fluid clean and at correct level. Any help appreciated.
Excellent video, I have a question on these transmissions. I have a 2012 Chevy cruze with a 2czw build, the torque converter won't spin and had to pull engine with trans ,seemed like engine was locked up but it's the trans. I have a known good trans from a 2014 cruze which is a 4bks , can I just change the techm from the 2czw to the known good trans 4bks or are there fundamental differences? Thanks
I have a question for you, I'm working on a 2011 Cruze. My understanding is they made some changes to the 6T40 in 2012 and any 6T40 2012 and up would not be interchangeable. Are there any other vehicles prior to 2012 that would work in the 2011 Cruze?
well I just rebuilt the trans and now I'm doing the motor and was just wondering if I did everything right since I still have the trans out of there was something wrong now would be the time to find out lol
Thank you so much. I wasn't able to find a source for a definitive answer on the transmission filter question if it actually had a end user replaceable filter.
@@GaryFerraro some transmissions have a filter the customer can swap out but this one isn't the case. there was a huge debate on the sonic owners forum about this. but your video answered it.
My car is a Daewoo Lacetti Premier 2009 (a Chevy Cruze with the Daewoo logo). I want to install an extra automatic transmission fluid cooler, but I want to know which of the ATF cooling lines entering the radiator is the inlet? There are two lines attached to the radiator. So which one is with the fluid leaving the transmission and entering the radiator? Is it the bottom one “as usual” or the top? Because all I know is that the inlet is the lower line in order to push the air out of the radiator. Please help me with this.
I have a 6t45 transmission out of a 2014 Chevy Malibu it brings up to codes before going into limp mode P0700 and P07BF and P0716 I have changed inner and output speed sensor when it first starts up it drives prefect then when it heats up it goes into limp mode change fluids still does the same thing when it sits for a while the check engine goes out then when it heats up limp mode check engine light comes on what do you think is wrong with this thing and also when it goes into limp it shifts really hard and then it wont go in to manual it only drives in second or maybe third
Sonex makes a kit that contains a new wave steel and concave plate that mates together . No internal splines on the new wave plate, so it doesn't dig in the damaged part from the old wave. End play comes out perfect.
Great video! I have a 2011 Malibu broke down right now, just waiting on some parts. Had a snap ring & 3-5-R wave plate break and jam up in some parts. I ordered a reaction planet due to gears being chewed up, but the flanges (the 3 flanges with 8 fingers on each) were longer than the one I have and there are more holes. Will this matter? What measurements matter in this case? Also, where do you order/buy your transmission parts from? Thanks
Good video. I am working on my first of these. (Same waved plate broke and the snap ring popped out.) Putting it together, my input sun gear has what are apparent directional markings. The one mark is on the inside recess of on one side of the gear and also there is a narrow groove nearer one end of the gear, on the teeth themselves. Is there an up or down on these input sun gears?
Thanks for all your responses, Gary. I didn't find any other information on the sun gear being directional in AllData or otherwise, but it helps to have someone verify it, nonetheless. I'll be putting the case halves together this morning.
Could you swap a 6T40 from a 4T45? I have a 2007 Pontiac G6, nothing is wrong with my car, but I saw that the 2010 models had a 6 speed trans with the base 2.4L engine. I have the base engine but with a 4 speed trans
Really liked your video. I'm a builder as well but I have not worked for a big shop in a while as I have a small warehouse I work out of with mainly word of mouth business so I see mostly the common 4l60 4l80 etc not to many newer ones yet. I do build a lot of Hondas and Volkwagens as a lot of builders don't like to mess with those, but just like anything else you have to spend a little time to figure out what makes them tick. As we both know the valve bodies are the main culprit most of the time so I have a big investment in Sonnax tools but it's worth it as the unit is installed once and delivered. I have built a small amount of the 6t70s with the broken wave plate but I have my first 6t45 and was just curious and that's why I watched the video to see what to expect. Pretty much the same as I expected, also I'm assuming those have the same issues in the techm with the pressure switch disc's failing so I know I'll be changing those as well. The video is a little long though could edit the tear down parts with all the bolts to condense it a little but all in all very well done Sir, nice pace on the explanation of tear down etc.
I have a 2014 Chevy Captiva Sport(rebadged Saturn Vue) and the thing I question is it rattles like it is in the wrong gear. Like a manual transmission if you try to take off in too high a gear. I am driving at a cruising speed and when I accelerate it rattles instead of dropping to a lower gear. Thoughts?
Looks in a way easier to rebuild than a 4380e. Probably the hardest part is getting it out of the car. Same trans as in my 2012 cruze. has 224000 miles might have to rebuild the trans soon
Hi there great video. Is it possible to change the output shaft speed sensor while the trans is in the car? My speedo is erratic and was told to change the output speed sensor by the dealer. Thanks
Should be, you may have to take the tcm off first and then the valvebody, make sure the manual valve is hooked back up and do not over tighten the valvebody or tcm, should be around 95 inch pounds
Great resource for all us DIYers out here, thanks. At about 22:45 you take out the drum and on the bottom side of it, that snap ring is out and the piece that the snap ring holds in is thus loose (I think you called it a 'sim support'). Same exact issue here, how do you get that snap ring back in there it looks like there is not enough clearance? Also, do you know the intent of the 'sim support' and the snap ring that holdsit in?
please give your Opinion how do you remember all these stuff how to re-assemble? on every Transmission do you also follow some Instructional Paper/Book?
Im rebuilding for years, but when i get a new trans on the bench, i do try to get a manual, there is a company in Miami called ATSG they put out very good manuals for transmissions

What do you think would cause this transmission to jerk a little when being put into drive when cold? Seems to go away when warm. Maybe an engine issue? 2011 Malibu 6T40 with 120k miles on it. It has been flushed at the dealer before.
Gary Ferraro The RPMs may be slightly higher than idle but it still jerks into gear. Seems to go away a lot when the car and transmission is warmed up. I should note that it seems like it still jerks sometimes even when warmed up. I just hope the transmission doesn't break. I'm taking into the dealer this weekend to have it flushed. They use a BG machine
Hi Gary, great video. I have a 2011 1.4 Cruze automatic(6T40) with 40k KM. The AFT fluid was changed last year, no burnt smell. Got the code-"P0776 Pressure Control Solenoid Valve 2 Stuck Off". I was thinking of replacing the solenoid valve myself. Could there be mechanical damage also? There is no rattling noise , I only have gears 1 and 2. Any way to know if I have Gen1 or Gen2 Solenoid Valve without opening the transmission. Thanks
Awesome video Gary! I'm a gm transmission technician at the dealership, seems they haven't solved this problem still, have you worked on any gen 3 6t40 transmissions yet?
@@GaryFerraro very few stop start accumulators, in the beginning especially on cadillac the coolers will fail and cause intermix issues. Lately though failed pumps that end up causing 3,5,R steel plates to chew up the drum, steel plates are very thick and tough. Also seen some piston failure 2-6 and 1,2,3,4. And lastly the front cv axles may cause an odd vibration/ shudder feeling during acceleration between 20-40mph
Hello Gary, I have a 2011 equinox 4 cyl fwd that has a bad transmission. I took it to the transmission shop and they quoted me around $4k to rebuild it and install a few upgraded components. I can purchase a reman trans for $2k and try to put it in myself. Is this a viable option? Is there any programming that needs to be done? Thanks
Not a bad price for a reman, i'm thinking it will need to be programmed. There are people out there that do mobile programming. Do you know anyone that works at a repair shop?
That's some brilliant engineering right there. Why can't they put the filter on the outside? That, a drain plug, and a proper dipstick and people would actually service these things.
I have a chevy malibu 2013 lost forward and reverse.. I used additives and that fixed the problem a bit for a while but now is bad again.. Any idea what would be the problem??
What is the trick on re-assembling the 2-6 piston assembly, I've compressed the return spring as the illustrated in the manual but the snap ring doesn't lock in place?
@@GaryFerraro Thanks for the reply, today went into work to get r done and the snap ring went right together versus other times trying. But thanks again.
I have a 2011 cruze with the 6t40. It goes from 1st to 2nd a little rough and has a huge delay into all the rest of the gears. It will rev freely between the shifts then finally completes the shift. I know this is an older video but I just recently bought a 2017 cruze LT automatic and really need this car to get me back and forth to work. I've noticed this transmission is having weird shifting patterns. It seems laggy during shifts, having weird shuttering that feels like misfires(no misfire counters), it hard shifts into 3rd gear sometimes, and after driving about 40 miles, it will start making this roaring sound like a wheel bearing is going out. It was super quiet and smooth today but when I got into town where my job is, it started making this loud roaring sound. I got in it and drove it home after my shift and it sounded quiet and I was driving slow and cautiously and it seemed fine until I pulled into town. I came to a stop at a stop sign (been rolling stop signs to keep the start stop from shutting my car off for 2 seconds), and when I started down the street, it started making this weird roaring(bad wheel bearing noise) and I noticed a smell coming out of the vents, I heard that this trans emits a burning smell when it starts to fail. No engine lights, limp mode, or any codes stored in the pcm as far as I know. I have a 30,000 mile warranty through the dealer I bought the car from, should I be concerned my tranny on my new car is starting to go. Im sure with no codes they wont do anything to rebuild my unit. I also found out they did a 100 point inspection but the guy checked off all of the areas like he was just rushing through it. It has no dipstick, so the only way to check the fluid quality is to drain some out. I read that you need to be vigilant on changing the fluid because the filters are internal and are not serviceable. It has almost 71k on the odometer.
@@GaryFerraro This is my second day with it. It did it yesterday after a 40 mile trip, sounds like wheel bearing, output side of trans. Does not change with RPM. It has a shutter like the engine is misfiring(seems to get better the more I drive). Last night pulling into town. I had to do a couple of sharp turns around the corner and I noticed some kind of smell(thought people were burning trash, really faint inside the cabin) and the roaring came back. I came to a stop and then took off again to see if it was doing it during its shifting and it the sound was almost like a differential was starting to howl. I will drive it up there tomorrow on my day off and see whats going on.
atsg manual shows dots on pump gear assembly , but mine does not have them I'm not seeing a wrong way to put this back together besides the beveled side being in the wrong position. My service manual shows no dots either for pontiac G6 2010.
@@GaryFerraro I'm not seeing any marks like you mentioned that would indicate any timing marks between the pump gear and the driven gear. The thing I notice is the beveled sides of each component , which are faced toward the pump assembly. Have you ever experienced this?
How much would you charge to do a 6t30? I need the pump filter replaced and pretty much a general rebuild of whatever is broken. It shifts fine but the pump whines because the filter is clogged so its probably gonna kill my clutches and bearings.
@@GaryFerraro lol no but I always get over charged here and I am looking into options. I live in Kentucky. It's my daily driver and it's definitely an issue that will boil over sooner or later
Hey I got a 2012 sonic that’s getting the 6T30 trans rebuilt now at 80k. What frequency would you recommend changing fluid in it? I’ve heard ever 45k? Thank you !
Gary Ferraro thank you. I think when I got the trans flushed it screwed it up big time. I already had a problem with 2-3 slipping when it got hot. Probably one of my biggest mistakes haha
Gary Ferraro it’s in the shop now getting rebuilt I barely made it to the shop it was flaring RPMs so bad. Reverse was fine it just didn’t like shifting when it got hot
@@GaryFerraro so you would not recommend doing a full transmission flush on the 6T30 only drain and fill? This trans takes about 8qts of fluid correct? Thanks looking to change fluid here soon after the rebuild got about 7000 miles on the rebuilt unit.
Eek the prices to rebuild - as a shade tree I go to pick&pull and buy for $150 or eBay for $350 w/ a short warranty. Then I might pay $600 to replace. Lucky so far since all worked for years...
@@GaryFerraro the vehicle is a 2010 equinox with 2.4 ecotec and the transmission is from a 2012 chevy malibu i know they wont interchange but to me they look exactly the same mabe changing the trasmission computer?
Gary, great video of the tear down. I just bought a used terrain (2011) w/ 87k miles. 3 days later 3-5-r went out! Thankfully the dealer looks like they are going to take care of the bill for a new transmission! My question is, since the filter isn't serviceable, and I want this vehicle to last a great while, would it be a good idea to add a external filter of some sort? Would it help or think maybe Cause more problems? I'd greatly appreciate any recommendation you have. Thanks!
I never liked adding those inline filters, had problems with those. Even when i get a job in and it has one i eliminate it. The only thing you can do is drain and fill, do that every 20k miles
I have a 2011 equinox with a 6t40 in it. Just bought it off a friend and he's saying the dealership told him its got a bad tcm. It drives perfectly fine until the car is warm and then it will go into a limp mode where the car takes an extremely long time to accelerate. Does this sound like its actually a bad tcm or does it sound like a different issue? Ive been hearing the 3-5-R wave plate is the most common issue with these transmissions
@@GaryFerraro I can check for codes later today or tomorrow. It doesn't stop moving. I can maintain whatever speed I am at. Or if I am starting from a completely stop it will move but takes a very very long time to accelerate. Rpms won't go past about 2200 no matter my throttle input
@@GaryFerraro there is a response from the gas pedal. Full throttle will run the rpms up to about 2000 but no higher. Then the car will accelerate just extremely slowly. I can get it up to whatever speed i would like to as long as I have the patience to get it there no hard shifting or anything else noticeable and reverse works just fine. Wasn't able to get a code reader on it as the auto shop close to me is only taking appointments due to covid
Hi Gary, question for you if you don't mind. I got a Chevy Malibu ltz 2008. I started having issues with trans like 6 months ago, it kicks/jerks between 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 gears and had some weird noise in reverse. The trans broke down approx 3 months after that. I took the car to a shop, so we agreed to rebuilt. After 2 weeks in shop, car was "ready", we gave a test drive and trans did not shift gears after two blocks driving. After couple days more in shop, mechanic said I had to replace the valve body with all solenoid on it plus computer. He said I cant replace solenoid separate on this car but the whole valve body including computer and reprogram it. After 10 days he replaced it and reprogrammed it. The car last in good shape like a week and started jerking in 1 to 3 gears and sometimes even slipping gears at higher speed. Mechanic said maybe the valve body was defective and need to get a new one from dealer. Two more weeks, he got a "new" one and reprogram it according. First two days car was ok, after that the car started again with same problems. After two months and $3,000 the car is still with same symptoms as just before it broke down. I am thinking the guy never really replaced the Valve Body for the car still shift hard and jerks between gear 1 to 3 either up speed or down. At this point I am done and I am taking the shop to court to recover the money. But out of curiosity, can a valve body be defective twice, new part from dealer?, can the problem be the programming?, can the solenoids be replace individually?, what are the damage to hard part after all these hard shifting?, where do you think the problem comes from, electrical or mechanical?. Thanks Gary for any help on this.
Question, would you say the car worked better hot than when its cold or it did it not work regardless? Im not sure what they did, but its possible they are buying aftermarket valvebody/tcm(this part is called TEHCM)(Transmission electronic hydraulic control module). There is a company called doorman that sells this part on the aftermarket and they are nothing but trouble. When all of this started do you know what codes were present?
Morning Gary, thanks for replying. The trans definitely worsen when warm and specially in high traffic. There are no codes for the regular hard shifting but when, it once slipped gears the check engine light came on giving: P0700 and P0752, last one refers to a problem in a solenoid I guess. I pretty sure the guy didn't install a brand new dealer part but instead as you said an aftermarket one, hence all same symptoms. It's been a nightmare the car itself and now the mechanic. Thanks Gary.
Gary Ferraro, no right now, the rest of the car is ok, but I have had numerous problems since bought it 1.5 years ago: water pump, gaskets, coils, steering wheel noise, shocks, roof motor, doors internal parts and lately I received a letter/recall from local dealer for the brake light issue but my attention has been on the transmission for the last 5-6 months. I mean I bought this car for my wife trusting GM but now we will eventually switch to a Japanese.
Gary, also could you explain to me how difficult is to replace the valve body and can the solenoids be replace individually for this car or have to replace the whole valve body as I was told, but sound really absurd in my opinion. Thank you.
The 6T40 has issues where the 3-5-reverse wave steel breaks, you dont really see this on the 6F35, this unit has problem with the foward piston tearing causing a delay in drive, but honestly i do alot more of the 6T40 units than the fords
I was driving my.malibu 2011 and i heard a metallic gear noise, when i stopped at traffic light the car wouldnt shift in 1st or reverse. Any clue? Its a 6t40
@@rodrigomeca what going on here is your filter is clogging up because something is probably coming apart. Filter is internal to the trans, so trans will have to come out

Hi Gary, the car is a 2011 Chevy Cruze. No codes, we rebuilt the transmission two weeks ago and it returned with transmissions over heating problems. We already replaced the radiator and we replaced the TCM and in the scanner data it shows HOT MODE/YES. We can't complete the clutch re-calibration because of the HOT MODE. If you know anything we would greatly appreciate your advice.
What was the indication of the trans overheating, did you actually look at the trans temp. The scanner says it cant complete the relearn? If you let the car sit over nite and with key on engine off does it say hot mode "no" and when you start it it turns to yes/ I had this issue, i have to think, because i forgot what i did to fix it. Tcm is new or used?
On the scanner it shows hot mode "yes" all the time, the TCM is new also, the temperature on Idle it stays 160 to 190, after we get the car on a high way the temperature it starts to get to 270 after about 15 min that the car has been running The original tcm was doing the same and that's why we decided to change it but nothing changed any information that you might remember that could help would be of great help, Thank you.

These FWD's will squeal the tires off the line in these Malibu's on a hard takeoff.Especially with Goodyear's tires Its gotta be hard on the first/ fifth clutches. I pull over the white stop strip if I can, they seem to make the wheels spin too easily..If it starts to squeal I let up and coast a foot or two. That slows the tires down. I just got new BFG's and they are a lot better on takeoff. Gotta really get into it for the BFG's to squeal. I bet the person who's trans went out drove like a idiot! .
