Gavin's reasoning behind the Swiftspear ban is utter crap. I'm guessing he got salty a red deck beat him a couple times and wanted to nerf a deck that wasn't dominant because "mah poor deck lost" 😂

I actually stopped playing magic because of the number of sets. I have a life outside of magic and it was just too much to keep up with. I went to an commander Thurs at my LGS and I had no clue what these people were playing and I felt like the outcast as I had to re read everyone's cards 6x because the text was so unbelievably long and had abilities with no explanation

In the same set Fury was printed in, they had Persist, the card that essentially gives a non legendary creature persist. Fury is non legendary. In the same set, WOTC obliviously had printed a way to cheat Fury out of the graveyard where it would stay as a creature due to not paying the evoke cost thanks to Persist.

Even as a purely commander player I was concerned about discovering as it is essentially a more busted version of Cascade. Like seriously, the option to add to your hand or to cast AND just raw ETB effects. . . You can just pay 1 mana and flicker some of the perms with Discover and just get free stuff. It's dumb, Cascade is super high in the storm scale yet they made cascade with upside. WOTC should have kept with just normal cascade if they wanted to bring it back or better yet discover a mechanic to make map token's that make you, hmmm explore. How flavourful discovering in order to explore who would have thought a reasonable and balanced concept.

When they announce a banning I come here just to hear Des rant about it. It's like a little gift you get to open when it happens.

I once read in a Wizards article they consider Tron a "fair deck" so that gives you an idea what they consider acceptable power level.

Hey Des, what are you're thoughts on the format, no joke this is what they call it, "Xtreme Banlist Legacy." It's legacy's cardpool but the banlist is something like: "If it was every banned in any other format ever, it's banned here." So like, Lingering Souls is banned because it was banned in innistrad block constructed for example. They also just sort of arbitrarily banned the ten Shock lands, the fetchlands and the OG reserve list deul lands. You're the only youtube I follow that still mentions Xmage on occasion and supposedly that's where the format is mostly played and where the "X" in "Xtreme" comes from. edit: Oh, and if a card was unbanned from a format it's still banned there iirc

I remember getting into an argument about the fact that I thought that Ragavan getting hit in Legacy was enough to get it out of Modern. Modern's banlist would be at least another 15 cards, if I got a hold of the format.

Evoke doesn’t give you the double striker. It gets sacrificed when it enters. Evoke “just” gives you the four damage

Also note fury is a better force of will with a single fury you could potentially remove 4 perms in one go, essentially meaning unlike a force of will where you go -1 in card advantage as a cost fury can potentially be a +2 in card advantage if you are up against a go wide deck.

You want to talk unfair. I used to run 4 dark rituals, 4 hypnotic spectres, 4 hymn to tauroch, 4 racks, 4 black vises, 4 will o the wisp, 4 black knights, 4 vampire bats, 4 basalt thralls, 4 blood pets, and 20 swamps. People used to like to play blue in my area so I tried to make things unfair for them. I mean casting 4 black vices first turn before your opponent plays a single card. It was fun times when culling the weak came out. Back in batch it was the games most powerful card. Card speed went sorcery, instant, interrupt, then mana source. You could wait until there was a giant batch of cards, cast culling the weak, then force every other card to fizzle. If used properly it was a counter spell that gave you 4 black mana.

Nothing will be funnier than getting MTG Arena ads on your videos.

Up the beanstalk wouldn't be nearly as bad if weren't for all the elemental evokers that let you cast them down free and replace a card

Thank God swiftspear is banned. Making it a common was a mistake and I'm glad they realized that. Burn in pauper was fine until that P.O.S. came into the format. Now they just need to deal with dimir control. Cuz bringing out 5/5s for 1 mana while backing it up with counters and kill spells is utterly annoying. My personal opinion, the most problematic card in that deck is snuff out.

You can evoke fury and still trigger up the beanstalk and draw a card. And you can use 1 mana to cast not dead after all to bring it back and get that ETB again.

Mana value 5 is substantially better than power 4, imo. Although, Garruk’s enchantment is still stupid strong in creature heavy decks.

DUDE< that's a great idea. You should do a video series on making the most over powered possible decks and playing them in Arena. Include the deck lists in either the description or the video, and show off what the main combos or kill conditions are. Be as degenerate as FUCK. Maybe this will force them to try fixing the game when you, FREELY, give away Overly Degenerate as fuck decks, include sideboards, and explain the tech to the decks.

I like pauper a lot actually. Its cheap and fun. As long as you have a way to fight artifacts and burn

"Fair" in MTG means you're playing by the rules as written, not using cards that make exceptions to the rules. 1 land per turn, pay the full casting cost of cards, one turn then it's your opponent's turn, one attack phase per turn, etc.

In terms of politics I’ll get it immediately out of the way and politely agree to disagree because both political parties existed originally as a balance of one another both with pros and cons; now in terms of wizards Hasbro decisions yes it’s been gross these past few years

My Neighbor who works on The Pale Beyond. Was a Freelancer for MTG Arena for 3 Jobs and quit. Quote: "WOTC are horrible and this Programm is a fcking Mess."

As someone new to magic and who has only played standard so far, magic is inherently massively flawed and WOTC has amplified the flaws. Combat is trash because too much advantage is given to the blocker (including if they even block with a creature or not). WOTC then prints overpowered creatures that basically auto win the game if left on the board. Literally like a quarter of all rares mythics and even some uncommons/commons are like this. The ONLY thing you have against these creatures are removal or counter spells. It’s not engaging at all. That dynamic is basically all magic is with the only variation in each game being tempo. 7 cards WITH lands also completely fucking stifles nuanced thought. It’s so easy to run out of cards or otherwise have a hand that plays itself.

I'll say again: I've gone back to yu-gi-oh.

The ""fair"" definition is unfortunately an extremely poorly named misnomer, describing a very particular axis which deck types can be measured through by relatively objectively - it under no circumstances should be confused with the common use meaning of the word that would imply "how fun a deck is to play" and/or "how powerful a deck is". One of the better explanations of the term I've seen is on the wikipedia page "Magic: The Gathering deck types", especially the diagram linked on that page. A deck type is geared toward ""unfair"" playstyle when it has little interest in investing board presence and pressure (ie. tempo). Namely the deck type most geared towards such play is combo (specifically the "pure" combo that couldn't even be defined as control-combo or aggro-combo). On the opposite side of this spectrum are tempo (aggro-control ala disruptive aggro) and midrange (control-aggro ala those "grindy/stompy" decks) decks. Again, I have to note that the usage of the terms of ""fair"" and ""unfair"" is, well, basically moronic, since those are exceedingly loaded words that come heavy baggage that in this case is only harmful for discussion. These specific definitions aren't used to measure or indicate how "fun" or powerful. The so called ""fair/unfair"" also isn't descriptive of how interactive with opponent's plan a deck might be. That is indicated by another such axis definition called "linear/nonlinear". Where the aforementioned aggro-control and control-aggro are both relatively non-linear, the most non-linear deck type (and hence arguably the most interactive one) is control. Linear decks are ones that are prone ignoring what opponent is doing. The deck types that are most linear (ie. non interactive) are the aggro+combo hybrids. In card design theory one area where the relevancy of these deck categorization and evaluation becomes apparent are metagame environments (formats). There the different deck types prey on each other in quite cyclical manners due to how they interact with other decks that have different linearity and ""fairness"" (though exact predator-prey relations are also dependant on the specifics of any given deck, especially in the case of control, so it isn't strictly just defined by the higher level deck archetype category). This is a concept overall is known as the "Metagame clock". It's perhaps a bit of an oversimplification but generally the health of a format is correlates heavily with the deck archetype diversity - ie. on the viability (hence availability) of each differing deck archetype. If particular deck types are almost completely lacking in an environment (have little to no representation), the format is rigid and easily susceptible to predators that should/would otherwise be "predated on" by the particular deck type that is missing (so having a gameplan that takes advantage in a certain way, which can be mostly understood through those axes of linearity and ""fairness"").

I’ve been playing since 95 and modern is the only decent format. Everything else is new and just aims to replace modern
