EDIT: WARNING!!! It has come to my attention that kits being sold by other sources ( Sierra ) are saying that you should set the timing per the manufacturer’s instructions when installing a Delco EST kit and that is absolutely wrong. You have a strong chance of blowing a head gasket or causing permanent bearing damage with timing that is too far advanced. DO NOT SET THE TIMING TO Mercruiser SETTINGS OR DAMAGE WILL OCCUR. Watch part 9 in this video series on how to set timing on other engines.

In this video I describe how to use a timing light to set the dynamic timing with a timing light.
Using the light was not possible due to lighting conditions so I’ll refer you to this video to see the stationary “v” notch on the timing cover. Go to the 1:45 mark and pause the video for the clearest image.

The v6 timing is 1 degree BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). On a 7.25” diameter balancer that equates to 1/16” of an inch. Since the engine rotates clockwise the moving line should appear 1/16” of an inch to the left of the notch. On v8 engines you’ll have more notches and more room to see the timing tab. So on a 5.0 v8 which has a timing setting of 10 BTDC find the 10 BTDC notch and set the timing so that the moving line is opposite that notch.
