I had knee replacement surgery 8 years ago and the replacement looks great in X-rays … But, I feel more pain and suffered nerve damage! Not good. I am not going to have surgery on my other knee due to the terrible result of my first knee replacement! My Surgeon is considered “the best” in his field. I would not recommend him. Ever. To anyone. I was encouraged to do exercise post surgery very aggressively! I can bend and stretch my knee but the pain and nerve damage is my problem! That is my story. I wish you well ❤️

Had left knee revision 5 weeks ago as well as my rt done 2yrs.ago. Since my surgery in Nov. and rehab at home the stiffness is awful especially in the morning when I get up. Knee replacement is NO JOKE!! I had both done on the same day in 2005 . You have to do the rehab. I noticed that the therapist was somewhat a little too aggressive the very next day after surgery. All the bending and stretching caused some bleeding to come from the suture line and a allergic reaction to the glue used to close. It was a terrible rash that developed around the suture line resulting in having to take the steroid therapy. Your information is AWSOME .THANK YOU FROM GEORGIA USA.

Thank God for you! Im following you and your advice allways from now on... but not in a creepy way.

I'm starting day three after knee replacement in. Southern Oregon. Slocum CD enter in Springfield OR. I received excellent care, the actual surgery was at McKenzie Willamette hospital. I was able to do it as a day surgery. Ice really helps, my friend lent me her walker. Putting labeled medication alarms on my phone really helped me never miss a dose. I have great support team. An organization is providing daily delivered meals for the first weeks. This surgery is life changing and so worth it. No more grinding, bone on bone pain, the pain in my quads will pass

Omg. God bless you. I had a TKR 2 months ago. I am going to therapy 3 times per week. I went to see the surgeon last week. He said every thing looks normal, but my streching is not good for the 2 months time. All videos I saw it seems like really easy and fast recovery, they even mention 2 months as well as the doctor. I am 47 years old women very active. I wish before surgery I would like doctor mention how painful is going to be and stiffness. I really appreciate your video. I feel hope, and now I know its normal to have pain and not just make me feel like I am a dramatic person not doing fine at 2 months from surgery. All videos just talk about the wonderful surgery, but not one talks about, the horrible pain, stiffness and not walking normally. I am sorry English is not my first languaje. I hope you can understand me. Thanks again for all your information.

Hey mcas1975 A, sorry to hear that you're having a hard time getting all your motion back after the knee replacement...they rarely all recover the exact same way. The first 6 months tend to be the worst. It will get better! Just keep going! Getting more glute strength should help you tremendously. Usually everyone pays attention to the quad muscle after surgery...and with good reason - it tends to not work very well. But after you recover full quad activation and you're confident in your strength of your the quad, stop focusing on quads and get obsessed with gluteal strength!

At 2 months after my surgery, all I had was pain pain pain and stillness day in day out. But I did my part . Took pain meds and once pain started to fade I started bendin my knee with a towel, counted to 5 and slide it down . Each day same. Now Iam 4 months in and I can bend it more and icing leg 3 to 4 times a day for 10 to 15 mins really helps.

I think people don't realize they can have a partial knee replacement in some cases. I had one and for two months it was really painful trying to bend the knee. My doctor suggested getting out of physical therapy because every time I went, it would inflame my knee he was right. as soon as I quit a week later, my knee was feeling better and today I have zero pain and can bend it as much as before my surgery. Before you get a total knee replacement, ask if you qualify for a partial. Does the same thing and you keep your own ligaments

URGENT…….I’m from Australia and had total knee replacement 11 months ago. I can’t walk without crutches my pain is excruciating 24/7. I did all the Physio exercises and still do but after shopping or walking for two hours I’m crippled with pain. My knee feels so tight. My X-ray looks normal. Now my surgeon says he’s taking me back I to hospital to do an arthroscope because he can’t work out why I’m in so much pain and had so many falls. Just 3 weeks ago I fell and fractured 3 ribs along with lacerations and bruising. I keep falling and my life is worse than before. My mental health is soo bad because I can’t go out, socialise or do hobbies such as sewing with my sewing machine. I cannot sit in a chair very long with knees bent. I had a hip replacement 3 years ago and it was so much easier to recover from. I wish I’d never had it done. I’m virtually house bound because I can’t sit at a table for long with my knee bent so I can’t go out for dinner or other outdoor activities. I take really strong natural supplements containing turmeric which is supposed to be anti inflammatory and other bone strengthening supplements. No pain meds including endone (OxyContin) help. I ice 20 minutes on, then hour off without affect. I cry a lot because my surgeon says he has never had a patient as bad after surgery as me. Please, please help me. I’ve felt SUICIDAL at times. I am soo ISOLATED AND LONELY and I just cuddle my little dog. I’m 73, a retired emergency nurse and always been so active. I never stopped, and felt sleeping was a waste of time as I had so much I wanted to achieve. I can’t hold my new miracle IVF baby granddaughter or be trusted to look after her as I fall all the time. I have to use crutches and at home a 4 wheeled frame. I am very good with exercises including glutes. Nothing works. After I had my surgery my surgeon told me he’s suctioned off over 1- 1/2 cups of fluid from my knee and my knee is still full of fluid and I get odema right down to my ankles and I cannot fit into a lot of my shoes. Because I have issues with my other knee, euvery time I fall I further damage it as well. I’ve done soo much research to help myself but nothing has. Do you think the arthroscopy will show up anything? I was told I may need my other knee replacement done in a few years, but there is no way I ever will! I sometimes think people think I’m putting it on because they tell me stories of people who recovered almost immediately within a few months, even that is frustrating because I don’t want attention. I want to be well. I would love to shout it from the rooftops that I’m well and I can do anything I like but I fear I’ll be like this for the rest of my life, and maybe even end up in a wheelchair and that frightens the hell out of me. I really need your help please 😢 Latest is my surgeon is taking me back to take this TKR prosthetic out and put a different one in either hinges on the sides to promote stability. I’m terrified of going through all the pain again but if it works and I’m eventually pain free it will be worth it, but I’m scared I’ll still have to suffer pain even if it prevents the falls. I’m having it done in a month’s time 😖

Just dropped on your video very informative! I had knee surgery after a serious motorbike accident, smashed my kneecap and attended physiotherapy for over 15 months untill i was finally discharged by the surgeon who did the operation. Due to my age at the time i didnt have a knee replacement but they used pins to repair it and clean out all the fragments of shattered bone. It was a long hual recovery and unfortunately i didnt regain full range of motion, but i still use light weight leg extensions on my home gym, front of thighs, rear of thighs etc! Approx 4 to 5 times a week. You just have to accept and adapt to your new range of knee motions, having being pre warned i would never regain full range of motion within the knee early on in my recovery period, put me in a mind set i would prove them wrong and would re gain full use of my knee, however on this occasion i was wrong the doctor and physiotherapist was right. I can still ride a bike, drive long distances, swim, walk relatively fair distances, so im happy !
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 11 месяцев назад
Hey there! Sorry to hear about your accident and not regaining full range of motion! There is a lot that can be done after this type of surgery to regain normal motion. Unfortunately, after a long period of time it may not be possible to regain full motion. Having said that, it is still important to use the proper muscles during your normal daily activities to avoid other problems from developing. Hope this helps.

Thanks for this detailed help. We post-replacement folks really appreciate it:) On knee replacement v hip replacement... knee replacement is MUCH more difficult than hip replacement!! The reason for this is simple. First, hip joints are much more robust (heavy duty) than knee joints, which are much smaller yet still have to carry the same amount of weight. I've learned this from both dozens of physical therapists AND hip and knee replacement patients. It's been 3-years since my knee replacement, and although it did stop the SEVERE joint pain, I still have major stiffness and discomfort, for sure, and kneeling down on the floor is darned near impossible, at least for me. Personally, I think that we really need to explore alternative new ways to prevent these horribly invasive surgical procedures in the first place (like the stem cell injections that Joe Rogan used, but these are incredibly expensive, and of course NOT covered by regular health insurance).
@susanlord5743
@susanlord5743 11 месяцев назад
Before I had my knee replacement recently, I was asked if I was interested in taking part in a different treatment- using modified stem cells to create new cartilage. I was keen to take part but my surgery opportunity came up before it started. If I ever need to do the other knee, I hope it's available.
@tiffsaver
@tiffsaver 11 месяцев назад
@@susanlord5743 I would have tried this procedure in a SECOND, but you have left out a critical point. Stem cell treatments are so expensive that you have to be wealthy to even THINK of affording them, otherwise this would be the treatment of choice, years ago.

@greenapron1 8 месяцев назад
I had both knees replaced, last yr September and December 2023. Before that, I did stem cell therapy the summer 2022 and what a huge disappointment to say the least. Anyways, just wanted to say I had both ends of the spectrum when it comes to pain. My left knee done in September had literally almost zero pain. ROM is at about 105-110 but my rom before surgery was near 75. Now my right knee was just filled with horrific pain! I didn’t want to to even get up to potty, just trying to stand and walk was unbelievably hard, 10 out of 10 pain lasted for just over 4 weeks then it gradually went to an eight while my surgeon had me on a Methyl dose pk x’s two. I had in home PT 4 times for the first two weeks but could do almost nothing, only leg lift, heel pumps and a few other exercises that didn’t require to get-or bend my leg because I couldn’t and still can’t. I see my surgeon again on the 15th of Feb and if I can’t actively get my right rom to 105 then we’re going to discuss having a MUA. Edited to add that my rom before right surgery was at sixty and I was at about 65 after surgery. I been stuck between 80 and 90 for almost three weeks now and I’m exactly 8 weeks PO today! Wishing everyone a fast recovery ❤️‍🩹

Hey Marian! It is hard to say what would be best for you without an evaluation. However, we do have a lot of content on our channel that is designed to help people avoid knee replacement surgeries. If you are interested in learning more about our methods, you can find some great videos in our knee arthritis playlist. Here is a link to that: “Knee Arthritis Pain Help” ru-vid.com/group/PLJVIPiFvv1maa9YF-WmKLF7oI4VoczH8i We have also created a great knee arthritis recovery program that you may be interested in. Hello, Dr. It's so great to see someone providing helpful insight. My 87 y.o. father is scheduled for knee replacement on 1/24/23. I personally had a lapiplasty two years ago. It was very rough. Anyhow, I found that once my scar healed the surgical area felt very stiff (like a rock and cold) Intuitively I immediate began using warm water and started doing tranverse friction massages daily. At first, it felt useless but I kept on along with doing my Physical Therapy. I did something every day even if a little just to keep working on the flexibility. Anyhow, my question is I don't see much talk about using warm water/heating pad for Knee Replace (after the swelling is better or gone completely) What are your thoughts on this?

Hey Susanna! Great question! Ice and heat are both effective at helping with pain. These are usually a preferential thing for each person. Hey Suanna, thanks for sharing of your own experience with lapiplasty. It's fantastic that you've taken proactive steps in your post-surgery recovery. In the context of knee replacement, the use of warm water or a heating pad can indeed be beneficial, especially once the initial swelling has subsided. Heat therapy can help relax muscles, improve blood circulation, and alleviate stiffness. However, it will be very important to improve his glute strength as he recovers from surgery. Taking the necessary steps to fix any underlying muscle imbalance will be important so that the surgery stays a succesful one. Best wishes to your father for a smooth knee replacement and a successful recovery!

I’m Ann from southern Indiana. I had surgery 10 months ago. Went to therapy for 5 months. Was released due to Medicare coverage. I never gained proper extension. I walk with a cane & have a limp. I have no infection, no fractures, joint positioned properly. Had allergy testing to metals & tested negative. I still have pain, swelling, burning & stinging. Excruciating pain to drive. Is the lack of extension causing my problem? What should I do? I’m using 5-10 lbs weight with ankle on towel roll.

Oh my goodness, you are the first one I've heard mention about doing stretches and not necessarily aggressive, painful and forceful workouts on a knee replacement leg. The aggressive exercises seemed so counter productive to me because of the swelling and pain that follows. I can attest to what you say about the stretches!! I began to do that often because it seemed intuitive to me, and it was the first night I didn't wake up with my knee throbbing! I worked on easy bending, stretching my hamstrings, and now will include glutes as per your suggestion. I can't thank you enough for your sensible advice. I'll be watching your other videos. @@epmanualphysicaltherapy Yes, you are a breath of fresh air. I read a lot on the BoneSmart Organization forum about the way being aggressive hurts rather than helps. So many are taught no pain, no gain and they wind up eventually getting there, but suffering longer, in my opinion. I've commented before and you already know that I have a leg discrepancy, but my recovery was not very painful because I used ADL and gentle stretches and didn't go to PT until I had bursitis and they began to hurt me. So, without harsh stretching, I was 115 and 0 by the time I went back to work at five weeks.

You know those exercises they teach you in therapy after your surgery? Don’t stop doing them. EVER! That will make a big difference. Every day, I get up early and do a routine that I have made for myself, including those therapy exercises. Before my knee surgery, my knee pain was 10+ . After work, at night, I would just sob from the pain. Approximately one year after the surgery on my right knee, my pain level was at a 0. Now, ten years later, I am preparing to do my left knee, (TKR). DON’T STOP DOING THOSE EXERCISES!!!!!

Pain a year after surgery? Go to the ortho doctor and tell him how you're still suffering. The doctor will ignore your complaints and tell you everything is fine and looks good. Then he'll reschedule you again in six months and tell you the same thing. I'm not joking. This is from actual experience from both my back and hip surgeries.

Hey Virginia, you’re so close!!! Yes, getting to 120 would be nice but even getting to 115 is really good. You’ve got to stretch frequently at this point. You should be bending your knee to stretch gently every hour. Nothing aggressive, you’ve just got to patiently stretch. You MUST avoid over doing it because you’ll lose motion right away.

Said X-ray fine He finally referred me to a more “seasoned”Surgeon and within 5 min. He said hardware was loose. So had revision Aug 15 th this year. Had rash all over since first surgery. Comes and goes. Now having stiffness, hot to touch. He showed X-ray from first sugery and stem wasn’t even fitting so cement didn’t take. Went in took out, relplaced. Now having same symptoms as did after after first surgery and rash. Thinking May be reacting to metal in body? Have you heard of a rash with replacement and rejection symptoms? Thank you

OMG when I had my tkr I broke out with a very bad rash. And I was wondering if it was an allergic reaction to the metal, idk but the rash was really bad and covered my entire knee and my thigh as well. The doctor claims it wasn't from the replacement and referred me to a dermatologist. But I know it had to have been a reaction from the replacement because the rash appeared shortly after my tkr and I had the rash for over an year.
