On this video we see the factory check-ball locations for this particular model. I also share with you the alternative check-ball locations that I have been using for many years on 700's.
The rule of thumb I share with you here Only applies to 700's. If you have a bathtub with 2 holes, it takes a check-ball. If your bathtub only has a square or one hole, no check-ball.
I also recommend you pick up a repair manual where you are buying your parts. They should have one there.

Hiram, As a dealer tech on mainly one line that used the 4L30e, I did not have the luxury of fixing just transmissions. From inop dome light to burnt exhaust valve in one day. Thank you for pointing out witnesses marks on the separator plate for check ball location. I am forced into retirement due to joint failures but doing a 700R4 with plugs in VB for hydraulic TC lockup that I am adding. While using 30+ updated parts and valves for lock-up using internal pressures only. I can always change springs, weights or both in the governor to adjust lock up points. Always check that 3rd exhaust captured ball for leakage using wet method, but I always enjoy your straight forward instruction using common sense and best practices. I truly miss fighting the clock each day even though putting 120 hours per week, but customers respect your efforts and the pay is sorely missed. Thanks again and thumbs up for your efforts! Blessings and don’t get hurt. Pain sucks and only goes away when asleep.

I was a tech with all the patches and in the automotive repair industry my entire life from the age of 13. In 2015 I found out I had a serious joint degenerative disease. I lost use of my hands for 8 months. Many surgeries later I am blessed to have use of my hands again but through being told my shoulders needed replacements , along with numerous disc problems I lost the ability to work and provide for my family. It happened almost overnight. That was seven years ago and although i am no longer doing the only profession I ever loved I found a new way to get by, God has blessed me with more understanding. I am currently building a 700r4 for my buddy's wild C10 and although it takes me ten times as long to do it I am fulfilled. God bless you sir.

@@Mike-xt2ot I have Superior 3/4 servo w/billet cover. It is larger than Corvette by far. Replace captured check valves are rear next to governor screen filter, they wear out & drop into case. Don't forget captured behind band piston. They say to use #3 easy out, but use 5/16" X 13 tap. Screws in tight, metal plate over VB to protect then pry up. Comes right out. Drill return for front pump bushing oversized, red Loctite Teflon Sonnax wide bushing in place. Stake with dull punch in 2 places rear & 2 more rear. Get a new VB Plate as they take a beating. 0.500" pressure valve, reverse update from Sonnax, use Alto Red Eagle HP kit w/ Kolene treated steels. End up with 9 friction/9 steels in 3rd with 0.28" end play. I used ACDelco 5 pinion gear planetaries front and rear. Use Sonnax HD drum, ToYo roller brg kit. Get JR shift kit for plugs, TV valve, end spring w/grooves that hold oil. If Aux side accumulator, don't forget ball, JR LU kit for VB if 87 era, choose spring for lock-up at 42 MPH. PCM / LS swap? Get 40 tooth tone ring for output shaft. 92 -94 "F" body pickup and buy connector. Run as twisted pair 9 times per foot. Either go to VSS high or VSS low. A/C syne wave changed to digital on-off signal to operate Speedo, ABS, Radio if RDS. DK, ASE master tech since 78, best of luck, sucks getting old!

@@Mike-xt2ot There is a book / guideline laid out over 40 (?) pages that is a little dated but still help a bunch. Online, find World Wide Parts and also use the Sonnax help page. Year, make, model and it will list all parts they make, why and what the fix. I have a clip board in the garage with every instruction sheet, part numbers and I took photos during the build. You caught me off guard Will upstairs in the kitchen watching my huge 13" TV. I went by memory but look at Sonnax, Alto Red Eagle at World Wide Parts Outlet & ask for Brian, 700R4 / 4L60 3-4 power pack (057757BHP complete kit), Superior products K012, K034, and Transgo JR shift kit, Transgo SK 700 Jr-B repair kit and VB plate. I forget but I think Sonnax "Smart Shell" skip the beast, Sonnax servo release check valve (Keeps from having two partial engagements at the same time), 3- painless pistons, Borg-Warner 29 element sprag, Wide Roller Low (A74658B, A74654R) and the 85-89 700R4 has holes plugged in VB, but come out for hydraulic torque clutch. Spring selects speed. Because extra unused wires in case, I bought a nice trans oil temp gauge but used one wire (Soldered / heat shrink) to temp sensor and placed on unused bracket. Exact pan oil temp! Grounds thru case, wire gauge where you want it. I used a cooler but temp controlled fan. Bought $6 digital C/F controller, runs relay, turns fan on or off as I stuck a skinny A/C condenser from import under bed. No hoses to radiator or front. Metal shield with louvers grab air behind cab under bed but over exhaust. Using buckets so built a console from CPVC from Home Depot, wrapped in leather and placed controller at back. PTC thermistor in metal can shoved into the inlet fins of condenser. Compression fittings to hose to trans. I over think things but research and plan. Keeping paperwork, notes and list of brands and p/n's on sheet for future service. Look online for PDF of automatic transmission service group as it covers 700R4 / 4L60. If running 400 HP to 600 HP trans, keep it cool with wide band on 3rd, last for decades. Driver not a racer and still 1/2 cost of standard Raybestos built trans. DK.

Good afternoon, I have a 87 700r4 that I got back from the rebuild shop. I had no 2nd gear (cannot get it to go into second period, under any circumstances, ever) and I had no 4th gear (wouldn’t hold 4th). I changed the servo cause the 4th gear component had a damaged seal from improper install, now 4th works great. But I still have no 2nd gear. Any advice where I should start?

I tore apart a 700r4 today and found low reverse burnt smooth up and noticed the rear check ball was missing out of its cage . could that be the cause for low reverse issue? it came out of a 90 model c1500 and it only had 2 check balls in whole unit . minus the capsule. does that sound right?

Mr. Gutierrez: First, TY! for the helpful video. 1) At 6'18" into this video, one (yourself) demonstrates a "square" versus "hole" location in the separator plate. 2) In the 700R4 ("1987 model" as per the code on the transmission?; definitely a "4L60" with a "Governor" used in shifting; not a 4L60E transmission) we're rebuilding at Truman College (Chicago, IL), there's a "hole" located in the separator plate at the described location at 6'18" into the video. However it isn't "2" holes as one describes in the video. It definitely isn't a "square." 3) On the separator plate this location appears to have a spot for a hole to be "drilled" into the separator plate should one desire to do it. This would therefore make it a "2 hole" location needing a "check ball." 4) In checking the location on the case, there isn't a "bathtub" at the location. 5) There's also "space" in the "transtec" gasket (apparently used since 1993 on separator plates, "separator plate" called a "bonded valve body (on both sides of the) separator platesgaskets" type of product by internet research. 6) Could this be a 1997 variety rather than 1987 700R4, because of the "transtec"? 7) Could this be simply a 1987 [with a later model separator plate (after a previous rebuild), so as to define the 700R4 as a 1987 model?] model (no "numbers" on an "ID" tag; going only by "cast numbers" on the housing re 1987).. 8) In placement on the transmission case, I don't see a "bathtub." 9) I don't believe there should be a "drilling open" of the "absent 'transtec' location" as a result of it; there's no need for it. 10) Comments?

Hiram, WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!! We are rebuilding my neighbor's 700r4. It's an early Non Aux Transmission, K /4x4 series. When we lifted the VB (transmission bottom facing the ceiling) we noticed the check balls rolled off and hit the floor. We kept all the check balls in a sandwich bag, which total 7 check balls. We can account for 5 in the case-which we took a pic of. Looking on-line we can see variations with the VB bathtub check ball. Some pics show no check ball, and other pics have a check ball. So we are confused. Did we lose a check ball when they hit the floor? Should there be 8 and not 7 check balls?? I had a new bag of check balls from my 4l60E that I rebuilt myself- using your video--THANKS FOR MAKING THE 4L60E REBUILD VIDEO! We went ahead and built the 700R4 with the 8th check ball from my bag. When we installed the transmission last wk, we only had 1st and Reverse with what sounded like a pump whine. Was the pump starving for fluid?? We un-installed the transmission and we found had no burnt frictions, steel plates, or drum/band, which was good thing. We think the 8th check ball/ VB bath tub check ball may be the culprit? We did buy the Transgo 82-93 700-P plate which has 2 holes for the VB bathtub area in question. The OEM separator plate has either a square (no check ball), or a circle(s) (checkball) to denote the use of a check ball or not like you mentioned. We accidentally threw away the original separator plate, so we have no reference of witness check ball marks pertaining to the VB bathtub. You're video is for the Aux 700R4=no check ball. Would this VB check ball cause the pump whine and failure to upshift? We purchased a new re-man'ed pump to rule out the pump. We are about to rebuild the trans again, but need info on total check ball count. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Hello Hiram, question: I rebuilt a 700r4, 27 spines, 1982, did not change all cylinder gaskets as the old one seem good, did not change bearings, changed all clutches, added TransGo basic kit. Replaced the pump. All seemed good. Unfortunately when I test the transmission, I have no pressure on main line pressure tap, or better very little 10 or 20 psi at most, very unstable. I opened the transmission again, all seems ok, what should I look for to spot the problem? Case leaking possibly?? Thank you much,

This is the same transmission that has a AUX valve body. The aluminum housing is the forward accumulator with the check ball. Only pressure switches, wiring for TCC lockup is different and some have a temperature snap switch mounted on a bracket. The 1993 is the split in spool valves or full ECM controlled transmissions. So the same as yours. Two strategies are used with the temp switch. One allows TCC lockup only when warm enough, the other keeps you out of 4th gear until warm. Yours will very! My 86 GM shop manual for the Monte Carlo, El Camino, etc., has 9 different wiring schematics alone. Hiram is a busy man, making money for himself and family, as techs fight the clock, so he does not answer most posts asking him to fix their tranny. I don’t blame him, but admire the time he does take to video his work! ASE Master Tech since 1978-Retired

Oh yes, being an ex GM dealer tech, I've driven late model vehicles the way you described in your reply many times. The 2010 Camaros were particularly fun to do that with, even the ones with the V6 :) Don't really know anything about the 200 series, mainly because of exactly what you said. They had such a short run on those. Definitely gotta agree with the engine and trans having to be in perfect harmony with each other for good overlap to take place. The GMC Acadia is a good example of this. There's only one sprag in the trans, so it's as close to a true clutch-to-clutch trans as you can get without it actually being one, so as you know, shift timing is tricky to pull off seamlessly. As a result, anytime you have to reprogram the ECM for whatever reason, the TCM must also be programmed at the same time. The opposite is also true. Anytime you have to reprogram a TCM for whatever reason, the ECM must also be reprogrammed.
