i don't know exactly what's your car problem. but i had solved my problem through an condenser. It may many reason, ignition, spark plugs-cables or carb. Just i think.
A carburated car can stay running without ignition when it has been running rich and a lot of carbon has build up in the cilinders. The carbon can start to glow and be a source of ignition
just for asking... you're using the original tank? did u know if the last owner change it? because my beetle shoots a lot of fire and die when i try to start him up, plus the dusty n dirty carb he has until last week when i gave him a "life's breath"...
I have no any idea about (fuel) tank but your problem seems as carb. If you have opportunity i'll suggest to you try it with a new carb. Hope you can fix it. Greetings.
