Those old Ford, MOTORCRAFT carb's are some of the easiest carbs to work on. At one time there were millions of those things out there in junkyards everywhere. They all interchanged. At one time it was easy to fix one of them. If you had a good carb, but the shaft had worn out causing a vacuum leak, just go to the junkyard and find one that wasn't worn out. Take the bottom off and put it on your carb. They made these things for at least 40 years. I'm sure many have gone to scrap by now.

Great video reminds me when I tuned vehicles for living .We used a propane blue bottle fixed with a hose and a 12 inch metal spigot to do vacuum leak tests your way works just as well ,without having the need to have dedicated equipment sitting in the tool crib most of the time ,then when you need it you realize that you used the hose on the last job instead of going to the parts room for some hose to replace a leaking one on the vehicle

Working with carburetors is a lost art, todays up and coming automotive mechanics would be what is that? How do I plug my scanner in to diagnose it. I think I would rather be working on a Motorcraft carburetor than a Rochester. I've wafted propane to find vacuum leaks not the safest, I've seen acetylene used engines like that lol. If you've got a leaky ignition system you might be in for a surprise using those methods LOL.

I first set the choke to adjust the stat, this sets the upper choke blade for the rich fast idle and leave it a bit open, do not close all the way, it will not want to start fully shut, and open a bit more. Then I set the fast idle around 1100 or 1200 rpm. My 400 2V is smooth with the idle mixture screws adjusted at 2.5 turns at low idle and warmed up at 750.

I mostly do 20 minute videos, but I have recently done some short ones, well under 8 minutes and advertisements run on my channel. I think the person at RU-vid is not accurately informed on that front. The question of advertisers in your genre - well nothing you can do for that. On this video there was no pre-roll advertisement and nothing during either, I'll come back and change this if there is a post-roll advertisement.

I think your content is amazing Jeff and I've been sub'd, and with few exceptions I've watched every video you've made start to finish for the last 5+ years. If I can make a suggestion of things that you can do to help your view count, I'd suggest you engage with your commenters more. Case in point I did a quick check and in just 3 of your most recent videos you had 300 comments to which you replied to only 8 of them. People like RU-vid creators who engage with them, and they are more likely to come back and view and comment if they feel they're being responded to. You don't even need to actually reply you can even just hit the little heart symbol to acknowledge and show appreciation for their comments. This is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth.

I'm having a few different issues all are minor. The one that pertains is a yfa carb. The set for the mixture doesn't really do much. But it eighter too rich to run or lean enough to struggle to over come getting going. It only has 2 mixture screw or setting. I'm stuck to these yfa carbs there junk.

Hey Jeff. Are you familiar with the story of the "rural purge" that CBS instigated at the end of the 1970-71 television season? CBS had several popular "rural themed" shows like Mayberry RFD, The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, and Hee Haw. Critics began referring to CBS as the "Country Broadcasting System" or the "Hillbilly Network". The shows were still strong in the ratings right up until "rural purge" when the network abruptly canceled all of them simultaneously. Why? Because popularity and Nielsen ratings mean absolutely nothing if your shows are not attracting the demographic that your advertisers need to sell their products. I've recently seen several RU-vidrs complaining that entire genres have suddenly been demonetized simply because the content isn't attractive to RU-vid's advertisers. This all sounds very much like RU-vid's equivalent of the "rural purge". I say all of this as a fan of your channel and I don't have a solution for you, but maybe this information will help you to understand the problem and work through or around it. You're a smart man (with dirty fingernails). 😁

@ElderlyIron
@ElderlyIron Год назад
First define "restoration" for yourself. Full on restoration is going to cost you around $30,000 and up, and then you'll be afraid to drive it anywhere! If you want to keep driving it and enjoy it while "restoring" it, start with the brakes, steering and wheel and axle bearings. When you buy restoration parts ahead of time, open the boxes and inspect the parts right away for quality and fit, especially if you don't plane to install them a long time down the road. Only you can decide which part is the most important to you. Perhaps you would like the interior to look nice while you drive it. If the transmission decides to fail on you, then you know what you have to do next, as it already made the decision for you! As far as common issues for that particular truck, the exhaust manifolds crack and/or someone has broken the exhaust bolts off in the head. The drivers window regulator goes bad, the windshield usually cracks, starting at the right side defroster vent. Power steering pumps generally get noisy and weak, and the EGR plate under the carburetor erodes and creates a vacuum leak. Wiper switches are generally worn out by now too. Steering components are likely loose and unless you found a pristine truck, the horn pad is missing from the badly cracked steering wheel, both of which are quite spendy indeed. Again, the first thing to determine is how far you want to go with your restoration. If your hard components are in good condition and you want to start cosmetics, do that. If you have any steering or brake issues, they are at the top of the priority list. Don't do paint until your mechanicals are completed. Even then, you can repaint by taping off all the chrome, or you can remove all the chrome. Here again, we have to find what your definition of "restoration" is. You can ask me anything at any time! Jeff

@ElderlyIron Thank you so very much for your advice. That's exactly what I'm doing. My plan is to have her fully restored to her original, with some minor or major changes in about 10 years. I'm getting parts replaced one at a time just to get her drivable again. After sitting in a field for over 20 years, I didn't think she would turn over. However, she did!!!! I couldn't believe it! My biggest hurdle right now is the floor pans. They are rust through, I plan on buying new ones to lay over the old ones and weld in......what ate your thoughts, is that a good plan?? Thank you again, sir, for all of your help and support. Your friend, Melissa K.
@ElderlyIron
@ElderlyIron Год назад
Laying new on old is never a good idea. Your new pans will likely be close, but not an exact fit. Poking through rust reveals more rust. Poke and reveal before you line up your ducks. Get a couple cans of Amsoil MP. (WD40 is useless) I've tried a lot over the years. The MP works great! Spray every nut, bolt and screw you can find. Do it all now. Don't wait until you're ready for that next step. Learn how to use a torch for heating nuts, bolts and screws, and for cutting. Get one of those old 2 gallon pressurized water fire extinguishers. always, always ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand and at the ready. Do NOT rely on dry chem extinguishers. I may be getting locked out of my account soon. Long story. Technical issue that I can't get past India in order to repair the problem. Use my email, thestaff at elderlyiron, and don't forget the dot com.

Jeff, thank you for your video. I actually have a 78 Lincoln mark v w/the 6.6L. and I am have issues with it idling high. After going through damn near everything, I found the issue being with the "A/C step-up solenoid". My problem is, finding a replacement part using that name for the part. Is there a different name for the part besides "anti-diesling senoid" that could help me find a replacement for mine that is sticking and not allowing idle to lower when car is running? Thank you! 👍🏽

I have the 390 and same carb in my F-350. I don’t have the anti-knock solenoid. It wants to backfire intermittently as it idles. What causes this?
@ElderlyIron
@ElderlyIron Год назад
Little short on info. The anti-knock you mention is an anti-dieseling solenoid, so it doesn't enter the equation in the question you're asking. As to backfiring, is it ONLY at idle? Does it matter if it's cold or hot? Does it come through the carburetor, or only the exhaust? Is it hitting on all 8? Does it pop and bang on deceleration? IF it's an exhaust only backfiring, chances are you're running an over-rich mixture, or you have an ignition misfire. If you have a misfire, it sends the fresh air/fuel charge into the exhaust stream where it gets lit by the hot exhaust gasses. If you're running over-rich, it does the same thing, only to a lesser degree. Lastly, check the distributor shaft for play in the shaft both vertically and laterally, and see if you can tell if there is any slack to be taken up in the drive and driven gear. Put a timing light to it. If it bounces all over, then it's time to dig deeper. (While you have the cap off, hand roll the engine forward and then backward and check to see if the timing chain has a lot of slack in it. If it does, you'll roll the engine and the distributor won't move when you change directions) At low RPM, loose timing components can go all over the road (so to speak). At higher RPM they tend to be under tension and only on one end of the slack.

@@ElderlyIron You gave me a lot of helpful info. I thank you for that. Seems to be running on all 8 cylinders. Leaned out the carb. It was running rich. Pops at idle and revving it up just through the exhaust. Timing light held steady but I’ll look into timing chain and distributer.
