Very creative and plausible story of how the XVC Enterprise would fit into the Star Trek TOS and TMP cannon. I appreciate that you did not have the crew make actual "first contact" with the inhabitants of the planet, so as to keep Cochrane with that honor. It was great to see a photo of this ship (along with other ships named "Enterprise") displayed in the rec room of the re-fitted U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in TMP. My understanding (correct me if I am in error) was that the design of the XVC Enterprise, was an early concept idea created by Art Director Matt Jefferies as he was sketching out possible designs of the starship Enterprise for Star Trek TOS. In my opinion, your prequel story can easily fit in TOS cannon a lot more faithful than the Discovery prequel series. LL&P.

So Zephram Cochrane just got lucky the Vulcans were flying by. He wasn’t the first to do anything special with warp drive on earth. There was at least two warp capable vessels prior to 2063.

Exactly, in fact First Contact (The Movie) says that the Vulcan ship just happened to be passing by, hence why the flight needed to occur by a specific time!

It is nicely done, and the ship matches the first sketches the Roddenberry initial team did in 1963 when toying with a space civilization show, similar but more adult than "Rocky Jones Space Ranger" . One way to keep the history consistent with what has actually been in scripts of TOS, TNG, DS9, 1st Contact and Enterprise... Would be to make the 21st century experimental Enterprise an IMPULSE DRIVE experiment. As it is you have it taking over 5 years to get there. Impulse in the series and movies is capable of FTL apparent speeds, as shown in the first Kirk script WNMHGB. Often in scripts it is implied as sublight or barely lightspeed, except of course when they want to star hop with it. It went at the speed of plot. Captain Sulu was cruising home from his deep space mission on impulse with the Excelsior in ST6. They took long trips in several TOS episodes on impulse. Impulse and Warp being two different concepts of startravel matches with the intro narration of Forbidden Planet... And TOS was so obviously "Forbidden Planet The Next Generation" that GR always ducked any comparison by quickly changing the subject. Nicely rendered film BTW and a good story.
@startiger2
@startiger2 3 года назад
According to this video, Cochrine was able to take existing warp technology and greatly improve the efficiency and practicality of the engine design. The XCV-330 took months to slowly accelerate to FTL speed. The design of the Phoenix's engine was able to do the same acceleration in a few minutes. Think of it like the Epstine Drive from The Expanse. A jump in refinement of existing technology that made space travel practical. Really, this makes sense with the history of technology. The person who invents something rarely gets remembered by history. The person who get credit is the person who took an existing idea and refined it enough to make it practical. Everything from the Gutenberg Press, Jame's Watt's steam engine, the Otis Elevator, The Singer Sewing Machine, the Ford Model T automobile, all the way up to the Apple computer were all based on technology already available. The key was they made the final innovations that made it a viable technology for everyday applications and not just something with limited use.
@worldcomicsreview354
@worldcomicsreview354 2 года назад
@@STho205 I used to get that Star Trek Factfile partwork, which said that full impulse was only a quarter of the speed of light. But that was specifically talking about the Enterprise D, if I remember rightly. Maybe such an advanced vessel had "slow" impulse drives just for in-system travel, and the expectation that the flagship would never be more than about an hour from rescue, if her warp drives ever catastrophically failed.
@samsonguy10k
@samsonguy10k 2 года назад
@@worldcomicsreview354 Rick Sternbach and Michael Okuda put together a book on the Enterprise-D, and in that they detailed on how impulse engine technology had improved along with improvements in fusion energy production to the point that impulse engines of the 24th Century could actually produce a warp field, allowing for faster impulse speeds and also warp-maneuvering with just the impulse engines alone(basically being able to maneuver faster with a large-mass vessel). They didn't allow the ship to go past Warp 1, but near enough to make a difference. With that pointed out, this actually makes what was pointed out here with the XCV-300's FTL ability appropriate to the lore.

With human tendencies to just flip switched, this to the scene of Scotty locked into the transport system while stuck on the Dyson Sphere, and question later. Scotty, became very lucky, that Jordy, is the one that came upon the rigged setup. Of course it leaves the question, why not travel to other galaxies, lock in transporter loops and auto downloaded on arrival to the new galaxy, no older than a few seconds in age, than when one left.
@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics
@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics 2 года назад
Well, the transporter loop was only 50% effective remember? Franklin deserved better, so it's not a reliable technology... Also the nearest Galaxy is about 2 million light years away, at warp 9.6 it would take a starship about 680 years to get there, warp 9.9 (If a starship could attain and maintain that speed) 306 years... There arent that many people that would give up that kind of time to travel there... Then you have the problem of regular maintenance to a starship. Centuries are a long time for a ship as complex as that to travel without maintenance, so who would do it? We know from Voyager that both the ship falls apart if regular maintenance isnt done about every 2 weeks, and that going in to suspended transporter animation is harmful to humanoid species to continually do so. So a person couldnt just come out every 14 days, do maintenance and head back in. What about fuel supply? The Enterprise D needed to be refueled every 7 years, Voyager apparently every other day, how do you go at least 3 centuries without a gas station? So these are but a few issues off the top of my head as to why intergalactic travel as you described, simply wouldnt work...
@charlestaylor253
@charlestaylor253 2 года назад
Ask Lt. Matt Franklin about that. His transporter pattern had degraded to 50 percent in 75 years. Think if Scotty had re-materialized what was left of him in the pattern buffer...😫🤮

I was just wishing for a video on the backstory of these ships the other day! I love how this weaves the ship neatly into the timeline. As to it being warp capable, I dont think this needs to contradict the idea of Cochrane first breaking the light barrier, there are various "warp barriers" like warp 2, warp 5 etc, so breaking ftl itself would be probably the first and most difficult to overcome. I doubt one would go straight from experimental "torodial space time dilation " experiments to ftl. One would test this sublight and achieving ftl might require field and engine designs orders of magnitude more difficult than a sublight version of warp.... so... So, I might guess this is a sub light warp, based on the alcubierre design where the Cochrane design is modified to overcome the limitations it may have. So it may achieve only say 90 percent lightspeed, thus still arriving around 5 years at alpha centauri, but there's some barriers to the old design that limited the Starliner class to mostly in solar system use or only as far as alpha centauri... If we actually developed a drive that achieved even 10 percent c we could travel across the solar system in less than a year, hence using these ships as soon as warp propulsion could provide even a slight advantage over vasimir for example... So i would say Cochrane was developing the upgraded drive before ww3 to overcome slow acceleration and whatever the limitations would be, and had to work with scrap once UESPA lost support from earth due to ww3. How about a video speculating on Cochrane's career before ww3? Was he a UESPA scientist perhaps? I personally doubt btw he was born in 2030, the 2013 date makes more sense...was he involved in top secret research pre war?

This was beautiful ! ! I was always mildly interested in this ship/class, but never knew what to properly think about it and its place within the ST universe. Otherwise, I already read the story about the pre-Cochrane Centauri flight quite a few years ago, probably on Memory Beta, but I did not like it that much. I especially did not like the part of the planet's being inhabited by a sentient sapient species*, and moreover, I did not like that the aliens superficially looked almost like Humans. That was a massive let-down to me since I found it pretty lazy and unimaginative. I am guessing that this Beta story was created some time during the '70s or '80s when some Trekkies CLUMSILY strove to reconcile the TOS episode Metamorphosis with wider Star Trek canon which was caused by the old outing's Zefram Cochrane's proclamation of his being from Alpha Centauri. They obviously got all confused over it. * - As far as I know, in the current ST canon the Centauri planet was naturally M-class and it already supported complex life upon its discovery by Humanity (definitely flora in the least), but there was not any intelligent species living there. Canonically, TOS's Cochrane's claim of his being from the Centauri only meant that he was a Human from the Earth who only moved to the new world later in his life.

Wait, what? There was no new Star Trek on screen in the 70s aside from The Motion Picture in 1979, TNG didn't begin until 1987 and it ran 7 seasons ending in 1994. The film First Contact was several years thereafter, being the second TNG feature film to be produced after the television series ended. Thus, until the latter half of the 90s there was no contradiction of the TOS episode for fans to reconcile, clumsily or not. Your timeline is so far off the mark it's ridiculous.

I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for all the work you put into it. Especially the renderings, the writing, and the editing. I was thoroughly enthralled, and I can't say that for most of the other content I watch (which is mostly just to pass the time). Now I have to check out your other videos. I was just thinking, considering the XCV Enterprise was armed with hydrogen-fusion missiles (I assume), what would they have done if the Proxima Centaurians detected their presence, or had ranged armaments that could reach space from the ground (like ICBMs)? Or perhaps, if they had primitive space vessels (like ours in the present day)? Would there be a situation (other than the one outlined in the video) where the Enterprise would make the decision to fire? And if the Enterprise was lost, would Humanity then start building fleets of starships, or possibly launch warp-capable missiles from Earth? Did I mention that I really liked the video!?

Great work on telling the little told story of this class of star ship, do you make videos of other canon series, such as Battlestar Galactica? If so I would be greatly intrigued by a story of the earliest star travel that this tv saga history has to offer fans. Thank you!

The Terran Universe counterpart might have bombarded and invaded that pre-warp civilization and reported everything so that when Cocrane signalled the Vulcans they were ready for it (as seen in the intro of ENT terran episodes).

The chronicles of the XCV-330 Enterprise would have arguably made a better TV series than the last Enterprise TV series (with Captain Archer and Sub-Commander T’Pol). I hope this happens one day, even if it’s just 2 or 3 series long with 10 episodes each.

Loved this, what a concept! With Midnight Sky & ST the Motion Picture being pitched and produced seems this could make the leap too. 2010 built some tension with events at home helping build story. Would love to see something well done with more character development and less flash (Hollywood).

Very coOL....You did a great job exploring this early Starship. In an alternate Universe, the Jupitor spacecraft reaches Alpha Centauri using Hyperdrive after a long deviation from it's original course. Upon arrival, and to the surprise of the Robinson's, welcoming Alpha Centuari military officials greet the crew but arrest Dr. Smith and a long trial occurs. Seems Earth established communications between the 2 star systems during their long journey in space....

First: It's a wonderful story. Thank's for it. Second: What I think about the ship-design itself: It is a really beautiful Ship, but I think, I would jump in the next escape-pod at the first sign of trouble. I just don't believe, the this fragile structure could withstand a meteorite-impact or more than a very weak phaser beam...
