Good video by the way sorry for the long comment but when I was experiencing a crank no start issue, I searched everywhere and asked many pro mechanics, but no one has had this issue I was experiencing. Everyone's train of thought was... fuel-air and spark= start..boy was this not the case with this van. I have a 96 Express with the same engine except it's a 305 its a carbon copy of the 350. again, I’ll leave this comment here in case someone has a stumping issue with this engine. I’ll explain the issue thoroughly because it’s important how many new parts this van had and still did not start. I went on a long vacation for a year and 2 months. Came back and van wouldnt start, I changed the MAF since i had no reading, long story short, the ECM is located under the master cylinder and the case had moisture and cracked letting water in,, replaced it with a flashed unit. May i changed all 4 sensors since the exhaust had a hole for about two years and i got sick of it… new catalytic with 02 sensors (4) van ran flawless! Going to work, van started smoking thru the tailpipe and i thought, engine went bad. It left smoke like crazy and this issue led to my last issue i just recently had. It turned out the MAP sensors O-ring, deteriorated so it was getting false readings! Changed it and off it went working excellent until… On vacation August 2022 i Took this van far away into the mountain and the van shut off a few times. Getting harder to start each time changed the distributor, coil and it started, I thought, problem solved!! going back home it shut off during a 4hour drive) until it wouldn’t start anymore, i had no tools with me.. had a friend drive 70 miles to me with a crank sensor and that was the issue! van ran great but with a correlation code.. August of this year, going to work van shuts off. Tried starting it and sounded like it was out of time. Thinking that when i put in the new distributor, I never set the cam retard to zero, the van would ping slightly in overdrive, so I guessed the timing chain stretched out. 220,000 original miles.i changed the timing chain… no start and at the time had spark and fuel keep that in mind. In 2011 I had changed the fuel injection system from factory CPI to MPI. According to the manufacturer, they last about 10 years. I tested the fuel injector harness and i was getting pulse so I changed the fuel injectors again for fresh ones. I had a lower intake oil leak so it didnt really bother me since i was in the engine far down. Still no start Since I had a warranty on all the parts I changed all these again. Changed the ECM no start Changed fuel filter no start Swapped out ECM, coil, CPS, and distributors since they were all under warranty. Still no start from above parts Changed spark plug wires no start. Lastly since removing the spark plugs on these vans is a chore, I started removing them and BEHOLD...they were pretty fouled up!. I ordered a fresh set which came in Dec. 22,2022 I put them in and prayed in alien language for it to start...key in....cranks over...and VROOOOOM it started. It still left me stumped that plugs can do a no start condition. from having this van so long I have learned Vortec engines in 305 and 350 form and their cousins the V6s are very sensitive to spark strength. A lot of these vortecs will not start with a bad cap or damp distributor. The plugs I had in this engine fouled up when I had the MAP sensor O-ring fail, the ECM tried dumping in more fuel so it fouled up the plugs pretty bad...weird that the van ran so long with bad plugs. I am guessing when the van shut off recently going to work it was the timing chain that went bad and the plugs got to the point that the current wouldn't jump the electrode correctly. Fresh iridium plugs and its running like a champ!! Happy Holidays

Good, informative video. The crank and cam shaft sensors were not even on my radar. Hopefully these will be the answer.

There is now power coming from coil to distributer and the coil is new what should I check next

My 1996 chevy c1500 5.7 fuel enjection vortec keeps frying up new ignition coils after installing any idea where should i look?

I would replace all the basic things that are a part of the maintenance cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. Also, I would check the alternator output is not too high.

The gentleman I bought it from he said he change the fuel pump and he did a few other things I’m just curious if somewhere along the lines some of the wires might be bare or not connected correctly and I just don’t know where to start to start doing a diagnostic on the truck should I run out and get a meter and just start testing the fuses and then see if I can find a place that shows the piece to test for the spark on the spark plugs I just don’t know where to begin or what’s the best place to begin any ideas thank you very much Jay

The first step is to check to see if the engine is getting spark and fuel. Also, if possible, scan for any codes, as they will point to the issue. There are some good videos on how to check these things.

My truck shut down while driving and wouldn't start up again...Out of the eight parts you named...I replaced all either...still want start.... don't know where to go from there.

My 98 Chevy 5.7 did the same about a year ago , replaced the distributor cap and rotor and started right back up

If you haven’t try replacing the whole distributor and coil. There’s no crankshaft sensor in the 95 and older. All timing is made from the sensor

Guys check the crank sensor. If you have no spark look at your crank sensor. Distributor on these vortecs 96-2001 tend to go bad. Do not just remove the distributor and replace it make sure you mark the cap against the manifold and the base of the distributor to the manifold so you dont get a correlation error when starting.

make sure you have oil pressure and fuel pressure

I have a question. If the distributor timing is off, could that affect the spark?

The distributor is timing the spark, so if the distributor is off, the spark will be too.

@@Stam-zu8kr that's a problem should get at least 10v while cranking or else will not start , check fuses, as well as wiring and connectors for burns and corrosion or bare spots causing it to ground out

Did it ever start? Start with spark Move to fuel pressure Which ever doenst work is where you need to point to.

It is possible but that is rare, a hard-to-find No Spark issue after all the main parts are swapped out or tested is usually in the wiring.

@@Phdintheory I went through the same thing and it turned out to be the spark plugs. I changed them and the engine started right away. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Got it figured out. Mine's a 96 Chevy 1500 Pick-up. Checked the usuals, dist, (little corroded, cleaned it), wires, ok. Plugs, fine. Coil and in this case an ignition control module that is a common failure in these trucks. It HAD to be between the ignition key and the spark plugs. There's no other way. I had already replaced that coil AND the module 2 and 3 times. Weak spark typically indicates a ground problem. The only place left was the wiring between the ignition and the coil. I checked the wiring harness and wires individually. One of them was worn. Adjusting them while examining them fixed the bad ground. The truck with some priming starts well now. Remember: Ignition is, battery, wiring, (sometimes a module,) coil, (sometimes a ballast resistor) wiring, distributor, rotor, cap, wires, plugs. = Spark

1996 chevy Silverado vortex , new distributer . new fuel pump new fuel filter No spark coming out of coil, new module, new crank position sensor, just changed out the cam sensor tonight july 8 2023, also replaced idle air sensor and throttle position sensor , rebuilt engine never had power after rebuild, would die on almost on all left turns slowly lost power last time it died was 2 month ago hasnt started since down since May and here it is July, ,,What the Hell is it

Having the exact same problem.97 silverado 5.7 father passed left it to me.ran fine started it.and it shut off.hasnt ran since.ive put all new wires,plugs,fuel pump,fuel filter,cam and crank sensors,ecm,coil,and brand new distributor and battery.still nothing just cranks and cranks..
