Do you have a good relationship with your parents? Do you think you might be raised by toxic parents? How you were raised is one of the biggest factors that determine who you are. Your parents and environment shape your personality, interests, and ideals much more than what most people realize. However, parents are human too. As much as you may idolize them and want to follow in their footsteps, they make mistakes as well. Whether you’re already a caregiver looking for phrases to avoid or a child seeking information, here are a few hurtful things parents tell children to help you become more aware!
Are you depressed because of your parents? We also made a video on the signs your parents are making you depressed: • 10 Signs Your Parents ...

That's so sad. The only 2 times I ever really felt so worthless and felt I should just die were after deeply cutting and nasty remarks about my character from my father during a very tragic and traumatic event that was occurring to me, so I understand. There are two phrases that my mother always repeated: "If you can't do something RIGHT, then don't do it AT ALL!" and later, when I felt depressed because of that and didn't do anything because I was afraid of making mistakes, she said "You're lazy, you won't achieve anything if you keep doing nothing!"

Honestly this video hurts a lot. I was forced to grow up very fast after I turned 11 and was molested by a close family friend three seperate times until he ran away. Also doing the same to a few of his nephews before leaving. Ever since then my innocence was shattered and most of these things except being told I was an accident weren't even seen as problems. Im 20 years old now, turning 21 soon. Yet I carry so much truama from my childhood. My Mom has gotten a lot better now that I'm an adult; but when I was 16 I fought her boyfriend several times after he put his hands on my Mom. Defending her from her abuser; and she took his side and let him back into the home. After a few more fights I moved out at 17, and returned a little over a year and a half later after winding up homeless for a few months of that. Thankfully he was gone, and that's when my Mom apologized for everything. But it hurts; so much to think back on half the shit I've done. I'm leaving out so much here; but I have been through the ring of abuse so much. These videos are hurting my soul because I can't help but watch them; and hate myself for just how commonly I can relate to things in them. I'm a broken person; and my fucking head hurts. All the time.

My parents were far more comforting. They could lose their temper sometimes, but they both worked two jobs when I was a kid (they only work one job now) because we were poor and living in a sketchy neighborhood (gangs, drugs, and homeless people walking around the neighborhood). But honestly, my parents gave me and my sister a far better life than they ever had. My dad had worked since he was in elementary school, had an alcoholic dad who has never said ‘I love you’ to either of his children, and his mom was kind but addicted to drugs and food. My mom had an abusive stepdad for a while, was mostly raised by her grandma while her mom worked, and under constant stress. But they both vowed to give their children the exact opposite of what they had and we are forever grateful for them.

She ignored me when i told her i suffered bullying in 1st grade. My grandma skinny shamed me,compared me,and at the same time victimized herself when i was mad or sad. She doesn't let me have privacy, and threatens to tell anything to my mother, knowing she will yell at me. Don't ask or take anything with out permission 12. If they don't care they will never care 13. Don't be proud of yourself 14. Your better off by yourself 15. Control and bottle up emotions 16. I'm always thinking he's over reacting to situations and do want him to take things so seriously when in reality they arn't. But I never thought of the other side of this. That I might be sending a subliminal message that his feelings aren't important. I gave birth at 18 and I'm constantly learning more and growing. to parents, please don't EVER say : "you can never change" "you're still the same" "you look like a whore" "when will you be like them" "why don't you try to look like them" "why are you like this" to your child. it hurts. understanding each other is important, trusting your child for a bit isn't harmful. please, let us breathe. we tried our best, and we're sorry for not being enough in your eyes. we're trying to be ourselves, we're taking your opinions into consideration too. but regardless, whether or not we look perfect to you, it's NOT FAIR to INSULT our efforts. we have our own voice, our very own thoughts. please try to look into our perspective too, not only to judge based on how we act. we can also get mad, sad, depressed, and frustrated. don't say something that you'll regret later, and don't say sorry if you're going to repeat the same old hurtful words. you're supposed to be our greatest supporter, our home. treat us right, as another person, and not an object. we don't deserve to become a broken being, to question our existence or to stop believing in our own selves. please, if you're a parent, never restraint your child's development. it's tiring, how much it ache whenever we tried to forgive and continue to love our parents for being the reason we feel sick or even dying inside. don't ever neglect the small details we need in order to grow into the best version of ourselves. please, let us know more about the world, the bad and good side of it. let us decide at least for the sake of our life. to our parents, we need you, trust you, and deeply appreciate you. but sometimes, we also need our own space and needs. thank you.

I'm fostering my 3 grandbabies right now, in over a year their growth and development has just improved 10 fold, and I'm happy to know of extra things to watchout for as we help them grow, and I'm happy that despite some of the trauma that had happen to lead them into our care, that I know and they know they are loved, that they trust me 100% and that I have earned that trust with them, and I hope that once they get reunified with their mom, that we still keep that solid foundation of trust and unconditional love, that they always know no matter what I will always love them and be there for them, that they can come to me even if they feel they can't talk to anyone else. One thing I've found is when I do need to get a little cross with them it's too let them know,"I can be mad with you, like you can be mad at, me. But I love you no matter what!"

"At your age I was already doing x and y!" - I think that was supposed to motivate me but it did exactly the opposite 3. "Don't backtalk!" - That was especially common when I tried to challenge my dad's decisions 4. "You'll get respect when you'll get a job and buy a house!" - After this sentence I limited talking with my dad to absolute minimum 5. "You know how to do it. You're just lazy/don't want to do it."

When I grew up, I've to be the father both to my mom and dad. Dad I forgave him and I fought his bureaucracies when he gotten older and got diabetes. Those years was my best years of my life. When he was on his death bed in 2019, he gave me one advise in life: "Never give up". But when my mom died recently in this year, I didn't feel nothing. Due she was using me all the time and never apodized for her actions. It was a toxic relationship. She always gaslighting me to do stuff for her. I do have some good memories of her, but those was very few. Mostly I only remembering the bad stuff. Maybe I'll cry for her. But not today.

My parents are awesome! But I have been bullied by other people and they have hurt me. After a while, I learned not to care what others think about me. But some of the comments that wounded me from the past are still there. My parents had to be very careful with me because I am more sensitive, and I have high-functioning autism, and I learn and handle things a little differently. I was the first child out of two siblings, and I have a sister, who is almost two years younger than me. I learned to stand up to myself, but my dad would stand up to others, like a few teachers and some older people, who love to be jerks. My dad will go after anyone who tries to hurt my sister and me.

She told him how they were gonna wait to have children but that one day they found out they were gonna have him and that it was "a very happy surprise" to them. He took it very well and started making jokes about after that. Like, he'll hide around the corner and jump out and say "Surprise!" With a big smile on his face ^_^ He was such a cutie
