Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

First, I'm so glad to hear that Bee is taking it easy. Not only does she deserve to be spoiled after all she's been through, but secondly, all that raw tissue inside will become a mess if she over does it for the next few weeks. When she comes home, you know she'll want to be feeding the animals and helping with these chores, so internal healing is critical. Second, Theo, you've built a sweet cottage out of a very nasty barn and in doing so, learned so much about stone and proper building and what is worth your time and what isn't. If it was my property, I'd trust your judgement - including having the engineer inspection. They will be able to tell you if one of the structural stones must be replaced and if so, whether it's safe to do so - how high in the structure is it - is the building above solid or ruined too? Those are things you need help with and have made the decision to learn. I love it and do hope it will work for your plans, but absolutely would not try to guess from halfway around the world and with my lack of knowledge about stonework. Mostly I worry about your safety working up high with heavy stones. PLEASE keep your phone on you always and make arrangements to call someone every hour so they'll know if you're in trouble if you don't call.

Theo your structural engineer will be the best one to advise you best. You are doing the clean up to make the site totally available for inspection. Good job on spitting that stone. All the best for Bea’s recovery and she is home with you!

Theo, you and Bea proved your ability to envision, design, build, and renovate your stone barn beautifully. This project is bigger and more complicated, but it will shine when completed! We will be with you all the way....

There’s no such thing as too far gone to repair. It’s only a matter of if it’s historic value is worth the effort needed to repair it. Praying for Bea❤️🤗🐝

The simplest solution would to have a steel framework inside to take the weight of the floors and the roof of the existing stone work which would only be there for aesthetics

Hopefully the stone house will be good to go forward after the engineers report...and it is very wise of you to have that done. Considering the stellar job you did on your stone barn reno this place will be a show-stopper and I can't wait to see it through those renovations. A lot of hard work to be sure but no one better to tackle that than someone who is not afraid of hard work. Best to Bea...hopefully she'll be back with you soon and she can pull a lawn chair and guide you through your day while she recuperates.
