These commercials aired during the 1984 Olympics on ABC on July 30th, 1984. These are from a 24 year old beta tape that my Aunt and Uncle recorded, so the quality isn't the best.
1. Diet Coke (With Tommy Lasorda, Christie Brinkley, Chuck Yeager and probably some others)
2. Chevrolet Sprint
3. Xerox Memory Writer (Never thought I'd see a commercial for a typewriter...)
4. General Motors
5. Meister Brau (Brauermeister Meisterbrauer)
6. GE Electronic Refrigerator (Open the fridge bay doors, HAL)
7. Upjohn Kaopectate and Cortaid
8. Budweiser
9. K Mart
10. Nissan (Announcing their name change from Datsun to Nissan)
11. Snickers (Love the 80's dancepop jingle AND the mustache!)
12. McDonald's (Olympic swimming events should always be performed in 80's business suits)
13. Coca Cola (This was a year before they shot themselves in the foot with New Coke)
14. Aetna Insurance
15. Earth Grains (What about the athletes that want white bread? WHAT ABOUT THEM!!1)
16. Kodak Kodacolor VR 400 Film
17. Oldsmobile Delta 88 (With Dick Van Patten and family)
18. Promo for "Call To Glory" (Starring Craig T. Nelson)
19. Exxon Uniflow

Someone shaving their mustache...in 1984? No chance. The mustache is probably what helped him win.

Watching a bunch of these old ad vids the past couple days. Quite a nostalgia blast! It's interesting too...by the mid 80s it seems to me things were starting to look a lot more "modern" in terms of the way they were shot and the "special fx" used in the ads. Many of the 80s ads don't look so far removed from current stuff. The 70s otoh are like a different planet.

The quality of the recording may not be the greatest, but wow; I remember almost all of these! 1984 was the first year that I really watched the Olympics seriously. This volume starts with the CLASSIC Diet Coke jingle that millions of us GenX'ers recall fondly, and what may have led to Diet Coke superseding the Tab brand. (Incidentally, I just recently learned that Tab, which has had a "cult" following and has continued to be sold in select markets, is now officially being discontinued.)

My God! Christie Brinkley in that Diet Coke commercial is awesome. To think she did this a year after National Lampoon's Vacation and a year before she married Billy Joel. She was, and still is quite a busy woman.

Ha! We totally had a Datsun station wagon when I was a kid (i was 4 months when these aired, by the way). I vaguely remember asking if our car was special, because it was the only one I had seen with the "DATSUN" stamp still on it. Also, I totally remember both the Diet Coke and the Snickers jiggles/taglines.
@CamaroAmx
@CamaroAmx 12 лет назад
3 things happened since then. 1: people wanted more luxuries & technology. 2: crash safety standards rose. 1 & 2 added alot more weight to the car which led to 3: people wanted more power to move all the added weight. all this killed mpgs. & now since automakers can't/won't remove some weight, they resorted to hybrid technology, which added even more weight so mpg gains were in return reduced to the mpgs of 80s FWD cars, even with all "advanced tech" (cylinder deactivation was around in the 70s)

The minute that Diet Coke ad came on, I realized I knew every single word, after all these years! Crazy! I like the old pull tabs on the beer cans. Oh, and check out these lyrics from the Kodak commercial: "Like a brilliant shooting star, reaching for the sky." WTF? Sounds like poorly translated japanese poetry.

Your right about the 'probably some others'! I vaguely recognize some of the other faces in the Diet-Coke ads. (Example: the one-man-band in another play list was a stand-up comic, or something!) And funny you pointed out how this was just before Coke's famous gaff of trotting out NEW Coke! Part of me died then!NOTHING was sacred! Worst of all, my first job was in a supermarket, and ALL DAY long I had to here the customers vent! (Like it was my idea!) Besides, it tasted like Pepsi!

The Sprint was actually designed by Suzuki as the Cultus, and sold as a captive import to the US market. Later on it was sold as the Geo Metro.

The McDonald's Olympic scratch off game is actually a funny story. McDonald's purposely loaded the cards with events that the Soviet Union excelled at (of course, they put in a few events we succeeded at, so there would be SOME winners) Well, the USSR boycotted the 1984 games, and as such the US DOMINATED the games, and McDonald's had to pay out a lot more winners than they thought. IIRC, They lost a raft of cash on the promotion.

They were selling them, actually I think its an import (made by Suzuki for GM). It had 3 cylinders and was a total POS, lucky if you saw one on the road with 50,000 miles on it! In 1987 I had a 83 Plymouth Champ (import by Mitsubishi) that I bought used for $1,000, those were the days, the days of being young and broke! It was better then the 74 Dodge Colt (another Mitsubishi) I bought used for $100.00 though!

I don't care how cheap your beer is, comparing the taste to Budweiser's (aka slightly flavored alcoholic water) is not the way to get me to try it. I guess I never realized that the Krusty Burger Olympic promotion was based on an actual McDonald's promotion. I wonder just how much money Mickey D’s lost that summer. A lot of good being the official bread of the Olympics did--I've never heard of that brand.

besides alot of todays "advanced" technology has been around alot longer then most realize. regenerative braking (prototype Ford Granadas), blindspot detection (Tractor-trailers) and cylinder deactivation (GM-Cadillac) have been around since the late 70s. airbags (GM) and ABS (mercedes-benz) was used in production cars in the early 70s. overdrive transmissions (auto and manual) were in cars in the 50s. and i'm just talking cars.

I think some of the quality issues might stem from a 24+ year old never-serviced playback machine rather than degradation or something. Sorry if my comment is hinged on an incorrect assumption, I just don't know very many other ways to play Beta tapes, and I know the VCRs can go fucky.

Was Upjohn too cheap to make two commercials? What do Cortaid and Kaopectate have anything to do with each other? Really? "Cortaid and Kaopectate for those times you not only have an annoying itch, you also have explosive diarrhea!"

BrookeACrowe, both products still exist in 2019, so I guess they did okay 😊. I worked in pharmacy for 11 years and never heard of the brand “Upjohn.” Upjohn was acquired by Pfizer. Kaopectate is now produced by Chattem Inc. which is owned by Sanofi. Cortaid was recalled in 2018 and it is unknown if/when it will be back in pharmacies. It is owned by Valeant Pharmaceuticals.
