You are absolutely correct. Had a Snapper given to me and after getting it home, fired it up, ran good but would move. The axle shear bolt o the left side had sheared.

@@jimjackson9381 I went back through it, did everything you mentioned and even took off the transfer case cover to look at the gears and chain...all good. I sat there, just about to give up and thought I would look at the axles again and spin the hubs. The hub that is opposite the crank was spinning...yep, the smack your head moment. The bolt that holds the hub in place was in the axle hole, but not the hub. A two second fix that took me two days to figure out...my goodness. Thankful it was that easy, but feeling silly that I nearly took the entire transmission and everything between it apart. I bought the mower thinking it was the friction disk, which was damage, but turns out to be much simpler. Anyhow, thanks for the tips and great advice...really appreciate the prompt replies and your videos...keep up the great work.

Bill I think the only thing you can do at this point is when you’re done with it this fall take the rear end apart and see what’s going on in there. Jim

p neale mcd Hi it's Jim to replace an axle in your snapper you're going to have to remove the right hand fender and remove the differential and take the Axle apart, and by removing either the four or eight bolts depending how many gears you have in your axle assembly the small gears in your differential are your pinion gears the large gear most of the books just call it a 63 tooth gear some people call it a bull gear , if you need any help with that let me know and I'll get back with you thanks again Jim

Douglas Prebelski Hi Doug it's Jim Sorry it took so long to get back with you, on your sticky or stiff shifter, the description from parts tree calls it a speed adjustment latch assembly, I call it the shift plate, so to determine your issue you're going to have to unhook one of your shift links you have a short one in a long one after you unhook one of them you'll be able to move the shifter without moving the chain case if it's the shifter you may have to disassemble and clean the rust out of it and put it back together I have a video that shows how to do that if it's not the shifter then your hexagon shaft needs to be greased so that the chain case will slide back-and-forth easily. I just bought this snapper 3 weeks ago from a dentist who took great care of it. I mowed the day I got it, put it in my shop then week later I started it cause I wanted to mow and it wouldn't go into gear, it just stays in neutral

Justin Larsen If you tip the machine up you'll find the shifting has the grease fitting on it try pumping some grease into it otherwise you'll have to dismantle it and clean out the rust and then re-grease it. thanks Jim

I did what you said, grease looks good, no rust noted and chain appears to be good! How much grease should there be and could the bearing be bad on the right side? Thanks Jim for taking time out of your busy schedule for assistance.

cwslsj Well I’ve never worked on one but I guess I would check the obvious things the drive belts oil level and the filters to make sure they’re not plugged, have you change the oil regularly in the transmissions you should have one on the right side and one on the left side that are independent from each other they should both have separate filters in oil reservoirs. If that is OK then chances are you broke a chain either in your chain case or your differential or you have a gear issue in your differential check that and let me know what you find out. Thanks Jim

jayden weise Hi it’s Jim I guess you have to stand it up and look at the clutch disk and see if something is up against it keeping it from turning while it’s in the roll position on the shifter did something happen to it lately that would have caused this issue let me know what you find out. Jim

Sean Cormier Hi it’s Jim If it is a 2013 then it is one of what I call a turtle that was the first year they came out and they had a lot of issues. I would have to see a picture of it to tell for sure but if it is a 2013 turtle I guess I would pass it up. Jim A little PS unless it’s really cheap there would be a lot of good parts on it you could strip off and use on yours tires, steering wheel, maybe the engine some of those were what’s a called entry level and not good for much.

Jerel Rose Hi it’s Jim You need to unbolt the linkage from your chain case that comes from your shift handle and try to move your shift handle when you have it unbolted from the chain case it’s either your shift handle is rusted and stuck or your chain case is stuck on your hexagon shaft and you’ll have to remove the boots from your chain case and clean and grease your hexagon shaft so it can slide back-and-forth. Let me know what you find out. Jim

Marvin Lewis With the issues you have described it sounds to me like you’re bushing in your left hand fender is shot when they get bad enough it let’s the axle to lift up binding the chain case especially in the reverse position. Stand your machine up and take the left-hand tire off and check your bushing. Jim

This will also make the Machine trip down word on the left-hand side Appearing that something is bent. Jim

Usually a court will do both with some leftover. Make sure you go through the steps to keep it from leaking out. Jim

Thanks for your reply. I was attempting to open the center chain case. A ratchet on the center nut of the clutch wheel actually will spin the clutch wheel (I couldn't figure how to brace it but in its current state I did not expect it to move at all) so I can actually spin the clutch wheel there is just a lot of resistance. When I spin that wheel, the hexagonal shaft spins on both sides of the center chain case and both back tires spin. This leads me to think both chains are intact, and the gears are probably working correctly. Maybe a bearing is the issue? The wheel on the differential side seems to have a little side to side slop. I took the plastic cover off of that rear hub (differential side) and found the plastic cover full of grease - packed full. I removed the tapered bolt that fixes the hub to the axel on that single wheel. This allowed both back tires to spin freely enough that I could push it out of the middle of the yard. This is as far as I have gotten. Both boots are ripped. You think bearings or ? Also how the heck do you get that center nut off the clutch wheel? Thanks again

Hendogg28 I’m assuming this is a zero turn unit and some units have two sticks one controls each drive wheel in the back if yours has one stick then you have a linkage that’s out of adjustment that’s causing it to drive that way I would almost have to see the machine to be able to tell you how to adjust it. Jim

Jim Jackson.. Yes it is a zero turn mower.. It's a 02 yard cruiser ZRider ZTR.. But I figured out what was wrong with it. The hydraulic units on each side are supposedly non-serviceable. Well I'm guessing sometime down the line the belt came off or got really lose and rubbed a hole in it and it leaked out most of the hydraulic fluid for the left unit.. I pulled the reservoir off of it and fix the hole and then went a head and drained the unit and then filled it back up with fresh clean hydraulic fluid.. Only about 1/5 of a qt came out of it. But it held over a full qt up to the minimum line on the reservoir.. And it works like new again.. But thanks for at least getting back to me on it.. I went ahead and drained both units and filled them up. It's 3x quieter now and runs way better than it did when I got it.. And is much smoother to drive and operate.. For them to be supposedly nine service lifetime units there not very lifetimie..

Yeah my John Deere z425 48" has twin sticks and so does my Husqvarna MZ6128 Witch are both very good mowers.. But I picked up this snapper for 200 bucks to fix and sale.. Would fire right up and mow had new blades on it.. And have all ready fixed it and sold it believe it or not.. Listed it after I fixed it and a guy was like would you take 1350 bucks for it. I said sure come and get it.. Only changed the hydraulic fluid on both axles and put a new drive belt on it and a new deck belt on it and slimmed the 2 front tires.. I will say that the snapper did mow better than my other 2 but there a heck of a lot faster than it was.

@@JEBOYD2010 hi it’s Jim stand your machine up with it in neutral and turn the clutch disk by holding onto one of the four nuts and see if your hexagon shaft is turning if it does then your chain case is OK then keep turning it and see if your tires turn if your tires are not turning chances are you broke the chain inside of the differential if you turn one tire by hand and the other tire turned the opposite way that’s normal regardless of which way you turn the tire if you hold Tires and turn them in the same direction the clutch disk should turn no note it will turn hard because you’re trying to turn the drive train in the opposite direction let me know what it does. Well if you could find a Honda engine that would probably be better than Briggs & Stratton but you’re typically a little bit more money jacks small engine.com does sell engines and I’ve had a few viewers buy from him and sometimes you can find them on Amazon don’t think I buy one from eBay though. Dillon Roberts Hi it’s Jim One issue you may have by putting a 33 inch deck on your machine is your front tires are not wide enough for the machine to be stable the front end on a 33 inch machine is about 6 inches wider than a 28 inch machine, and the bar going from the front end to the rear case is about 4 inches longer to give room for the deck between the front and rear end. Should be the last question Jim I adjusted the back spring and I noticed good power with the mower and I put a new rubber clutch plate on . I cut the grass 3-4 times and it’s already wore through the plate and I’m losing power on hills again and the only way to get up the grade is to manually push the speed selector up. The yoke is good no wear and inspected the whole rear ended with no damage to the gears or chains and relubed the gear cases with 00 grease when I researched. I also lubed the hex tube and but new boots on rear end axels. Lastly the snapper is intermittent with reverse still. Any suggestions sorry for the long reply.
