Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Norm Van Brocklin comes in at number 83 on NFL Films' "The Top 100: NFL's Greatest Players" list produced in 2010. Subscribe to NFL Films: goo.gl/XJTggL
One of the NFL's officials had died and they did not have enough for funeral expenses. They were taking up a collection asking for $10. When they got to Van Brocklin he opened up his wallet handed the guy $20 and said, ' Bury two of them.'
Without officials there wouldn't be football. Officials make 1000 calls and get 1 wrong and everybody complains about the one missed call. You don't expect star players to be perfect 100 percent of the time, yet for some reason you expect that of officials? There is NOTHING worse in sports than losers doging officials. Have some appreciation. The sport wouldn't exist without them.
Van Brocklin said that, not me. If you see ' ' or " " that means someone else said whatever is in between them. That's the story Steve Sabol told. They're both gone now so who knows? No need to tell me about officiating. I officiated high school basketball for 10 years. We miss more than 1 call out of 1,000 for sure. What bothered me then and still does in any sport is people hat complain but don't know the rules. Then it was parents, now ignorant fans. Normally HS b-ball has one official for every 5 players. Your watching for everything in a set area. Sometimes all 10 players in that area. NFL has one official for roughly every 3 players. More of a specified set of player and/or an area. Officials that did both thought basketball was more difficult. NFL has too many "can't do this" rules.
If a qb throws for over 500 yards in victory, he's getting benched, so he won't get hurt. That was 50s football. When qbs weren't the stars of the show
@@mcray0309 Yes Jurgenson is more associated w/the Refskins & did play by play for the Redskins & he’s in the Hall of Fame. I like Jaws but he didn’t hold a candle to Jurgenson. There’s a great NFL Films video called “Did you see Sonny Jurgenson Play?” Here’s the video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9glI5sVzSH4.html
Sonny is my husbands name lol . My great uncle is norm van brocklin. That’s my last name too. Grandparents came from Oregon to California coast. Trying to do family tree research. I’m stuck, but I know thats my great uncle.
A record that hasn’t been broken in a league that passes the ball more than ever before and this guy was only and the only quarterback to lead two different teams to win championships how is he number 83
554 passing yards in a game during the 50's was INSANE considering there weren't all the rules back then favoring the offense like there is now. And it's still never been broken. I think Warren Moon threw for 525 or something like that in a game in the early 90's but that's the closest anyone has gotten to breaking it
So many fans have no idea how much easier it is now for a receiver to run his route than it used to be. Once they put in the 5 yds. only rule '78? it loosened it up.
Oh my godness! This guys Amazing! What a touch! if he can put it into the space where its over te shoulder but no to high perfectly ,hes one of the best in my books
That was really common back then and also head coaches used to wear full suits for the games. Imagine Belichick wearing a full suit instead of his trademark beat up gray hoodie with the sleeves cut off.
Athletes used to spark heaters back in the day in all 4 major sports. Some during halftime. The Knicks used to have ball boys take a cig run before halftime in the 60s. I can't imagine running full speed after that lol.
...He was just 57 when he died of a massive heart attack ! { my next birthday that's what I will turn ! } WAY TOO YOUNG ! Norm was Tough and lived hard ! Great piece here, like Sonny said, " he was tough but FAIR "
@@depaola63 it's really unfortunate that he passed away so young. He looked about ten or fifteen years older than he was cause he just didn't take care of himself.
In Madden games I always through over 700 yds in a single game no problem. I’ve gotten over 1,000 yds too (in a single game). Can you imagine if that was real?? Haha. That’s why I love the Madden games!
+mrkackerwacker oh stfu. valid argument for the second superbowl but he certainly did his part in the first. what about when he carried the defenseless broncos to superbowl 48. Peyton is a top 3 QB of all time
well, in the SB vs the Bears, Peyton had a respectable 81 QB rating, 25-38, a lot of deke-n-dunk short stuff and one big 53 yrd TD and an INT. At the time, the Bears were an incredible defensive team, as any team that had Rex Grossman at QB BETTER have a great D[you'll remember that was the year of Denny Greens, 'WE ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE! tirade, because even with Rex responsible for 5 turnovers[I think 3 picks and 2 fumbles.it might have been six, I'm not sure, at least 5]..anyway, even with Rex tripping all over himself, the Cards still lost thanks to the Bears D taking over the scoring responsibility and of course, this was when Devin Hester was like nothing anyone's ever seen returning kicks so anyway, considering the Bears D, that's a good game...even still, if the Bears had a good QB, with Hester's opening kick TD, the Colts are in trouble...but they had Rex, King of all that is horrible in the world of QB's...mostly you need a QB that manages a game and keeps the mistakes to a minimum when you have a good D, but ANY QB must limit mistakes,,,that is why I think Favre was and is over-rated...too many INT's...when he was hot, no one better, but he took stupid chances too much...I think he only has one ring for a reason, Reggie White--just kidding...the reason is like the Vikings opick he threw as an old man in the freezing cold... now that final SB Peyton won, he was awful nearly the whole game, fumbled 2x, lost one, one INT and no TD's, 56 rating and 13-23 for 140 or so yards...ouch...
Van Brocklin's nutty refusal to get along with Tarkenton is one of the most vivid examples of bad coaching in the history of coaching. But no, it wasn't Norm that caused the trade. At the end of the '66 season the Vikings were in turmoil. They won 4 games that year. Van Brocklin quit. Tarkenton wanted a change of scenery and got it.
@@OnePost909 Did Bud Grant push to bring him back? Bud was most likely used to a guy like Fran coming from 3 down football in Canada. He had a QB who could run in Winnipeg with Ken Ploen.
@@Jefff72 It's not really known. Bud provides no insight on this in his memoir (nor on anything else of interest). I would guess he didn't object when GM Jim Finks said, "Tarkenton wants out of N.Y."
Randall was terribly coached and which wasn't his fault, Jaws wasn't quite good enough to get it done, Gabriel was passed his prime Van Brocklin was the best hands down he won a championship, Wentz may give Norm a run for his money.
