This episode is all about the different modes of communication that we use beyond the 4 linguistic skills of reading, writing, listening speaking. My guest is Nik Peachey who has helped to write a new paper published by OUP called "Multimodality in ELT: Communication Skills for Today’s Generation". Listen to Nik and me chatting about the importance of multimodal literacy in our social interactions and in the ways we consume and produce media online.

Hi, Luke, here are my impressions. 1) The interview was great. I got used to your guest's voice after the first two sentences, and the quality of the recording didn't bother me at all. Nevertheless, I prefer your equipment because the sound on your podcast is just perfect. 2) Seeing the episode's title, I thought, 'What a bore'!. However, it turned out to be one of my favourite interviews you had. Your conversation was gripping and your reflections were very thought-provoking. I was inspired to implement changes in these modes of communication, which I apparently could do better. 3) It was a warning to be more cautious in dealing with people who want me to buy 'their commodities' such as opinions, beliefs, or other products of their minds. Many of them try to win us over to their beliefs and persuade us to support them. 4) I profited from this lesson at many levels: linguistically, intellectually, and socially. I learned a bunch of new words. It was a pleasure to listen to well-educated and articulate men. I became more aware of the dangers lurking in social media. I hope it will prevent me from being scammed or manipulated in the future. As for your question about the values you communicate, it's difficult for me to answer. What I can say is that I like your sense of humour. Even during that conversation, which was quite serious, I felt a smile on my face. You reach out to people who are different in so many ways. You discuss a variety of topics and meet dozens of people. On your podcast, everyone can find something that suits them most: chaotically rambling episodes and interviews when you keep to the point, intriguing stories and research on learning methods, world events, and a glimpse into your personal life. To sum up, I'd like to thank you for your work.

Hi luke! Dont change our podcast room !!!! No need for office like background. Stay unique and original as U are. The way U look and the room is also a language style message to listeners as Nick said and it is good so far. Do short story episodes too . Your recent one has over 2mln views you know. Best regards !🎉

I love the background of your Podcastle. Never thought it distracted me. I'd rather you leave it as it is. As for the values, it's just your personality, Luke, the way you are - so considerate and courteous with your guests, your sense of humour and your attitude to things - the value of your podcast is the content, very interesting and useful, and your personality. And your podcast is unique because you make it personal, and that's valuable. Thank you.

Luke, don't put a white curtain over your Podcastle, please. Pictures on the walls that have their own stories, books on the shelves arranged by colour, guitars that are your passion, plants in pots, a lamp that changes the background colours - all this adds warmth, coziness and the unique spirit of the place to which you invite your friends and us - LEPsters 😊

Great Podcast guest and very interesting conversation, Luke🤩 Need I add, as always? The topic of today's meeting and conversation with Nik Peachy reminds me of a saying we have in my native language: How they see you, that's how they write you. Our clothes, appearance, body language and tone of voice influence how we are perceived and understood by another person. It is very important to remember this and keep this in mind when we want our message to be properly received, not only in professional contacts, but also in private relationships. Thank you for the opportunity to watch and listen to your conversation. I had no problem understanding your guest, Luke. Have a nice, peaceful evening 🙂

Luke, as a student with 45 years old, studying English for business, my main difficulty is that all the teachers on RU-vid talk in 1st person or 3rd person when my main necessity, for example, is dialogues between 2/3/4 persons in meetings. This is what I have to study to talk in real situations. This is hard to find here on RU-vid. The most important part of a language for me is conversations, not monologues. Could you help us ;)

Thank you, Luke, for this new episode. I am from Argentina too. I am sure that you have many followers in this country. I agree that sound quality is important but how can you explain that it is also hard to understand movies, lyrics, news channels, when listening to you is so clear?
@LukesEnglishPodcast
@LukesEnglishPodcast 3 месяца назад
Movies are full of sound effects & music as well as mumbled naturalistic dialogue which make everything harder to understand. Also the way sound is captured in movies is part of the problem. Even native speakers struggle to understand everything they hear and more and more people use subtitles these days. The news is full of complicated, fairly formal and unnatural language which people don't use in their everyday speech. Song lyrics are poetic, don't follow normal rules of grammar and can be vague in their meaning and of course the music can obscure what you hear. My show is made for you, I speak clearly, indicating directly what I mean, explaining certain things to help you understand the entire context. I try not to speak slowly or simply, but adding context, explaining certain things and trying to keep the audio clear - all of those things actually make a huge difference.

Hello Luke, I'm writing from Kyrgyzstan and I am one of the English learners from your RU-vid channel. Your room decoration and background appear unique and cozy, so you don't need to change them. Honestly, I don't like your friend's background. It could be simple but should not be white in color. And one more thing, if he sits on a chair in front of the camera, instead of standing, it could be more efficient.

Hi Luke, firstly having a background similar to yours provides depth of field for an image on a two dimensional surface. You have achieved this to some extent by taking the corner of the wall behind you. In fact, it is almost impossible to achieve a similar depth of field from a curtain or similar minimal background. In this case, if appearance is important, you need to use reflective things such as lights or mirrors. To be honest, Nik Peachey's shadowy background reflects an isolated space and amateur work, not a minimalist or professional look, and lacks credibility. I think multimodal communication can be seen as propaganda or a manipulative form of communication that can be noticed in the news, cinema or TV series. You don't need this attitude to attract more viewers, you already have it. First of all, your content is unique. If you had wanted to do this, I think you would have had to add British cultural elements to the background as well. From what I see, you reflect your personal life and personality a little bit, not too much. Your background at first glance suggests that you are doing something cultural and personal. Also, a certain colour balance may have been taken into consideration. And it's pretty good the way it is. In fact, I often treat your videos as podcasts. I mostly listen to them in the morning while making my coffee and stretching. But if I am sitting somewhere while listening, sometimes I lose focus on your conversation, I find myself staring at one of your background objects and imagining the story behind it that brought it to your wall. Visual objects allow me to do this. That's why it's good for me that some of them remain abstract, just hint at some feelings or impressions, and don't have a quite specific meaning. Thank you for reading 🙂

Hey luke, first congratulations on your million subscribers💐. N second thing will b long ( may b boaring) if i go in details about this podcast! so i will try to keep it short n simple.◻️this podcast was very informative n captivating , i've watched d full episode. ◻️Reply to few of yr questions as viewer is,yes yr podcasts do generating values in learner's life in many ways . About Nik peachi's views on why he choose plain white background was to keep viewers like me engaged with sheer attention on d info he wanted to share.so that maximum learner can b benefited from it. It has nothing to do with changing yr studio back grounds i guess. ◻️ btw if u really feel to change yr back grounds let me see it clearly🧐 as even in 1080 quality i couldn't read titles in cupboards except 'give it time' smt 'catch clash',.... ◻️luke it would b kind enough of u, if u could show me 'black n white coloured writing', next to blue painting of (moon n it's reflection on ground).i like d way u prepared yr studio background.. ◻️about todays topic on "multimodal communication"Nik has thrown some light on many important aspects of social media, n how it's visibility impacts on our mind, while watching or listening them n what questions should b arised like why? from whom n for whom etc. So overall i enjoyed it thoroughly . It's weird and a bit difficult for me to read your comment because of all these shortings. If you'd ask me, I'd rather have a full, properly written text. Anyway, it is interesting too - kind of challenge. Back to the theme. I find it quite interesting, thought-provoking, to watch side by side: >>Luke in his fully personalized podcastroom and >>Nick, controlling the message, minimalist, without any "frills". It brings a lot to the topic in practical way, doesn't it?
